Few weeks ago, I participated in an event which involved a movie screening about the life of author and poet Jimmy Santiago Bacca. The story started out by introducing him as a child from less than optimistic circumstances, which circumstances lead to a troubled adolescence and the lack of guidance from any figure of authority in his life awarded him with jail time. From this desperate situation, a nearly illiterate young man rises just like a phoenix from the ashes and after leaving jail, emerges as a poet and writer with several publications and a group of supporters to encourage him on his path where he found his true calling. I chose to participate in this event because I found something similar between the movie and the honors class “Arabic Culture and Islam” I am taking this semester. The Arabic culture I am learning about is quite dissimilar …show more content…
Unfortunately, “unknow” tends to scare people, but the best remedy is to learn about what we are not yet familiar with. I learned new things about the Arabic culture and Islam and the class thought me about certain cultural components which are important to a person of Islamic faith, but quite concerning to a Westerner. As an example, I would use the hijab which is a head scarf a Muslim woman chooses to wear to show her devotion to her faith, but those who do not know it’s significance might misinterpret the character of the person wearing it based on cultural misconceptions. Ideally the character of a person should define them as a person not their cultural background. In the case of Jimmy Bacca he is suddenly transported to a new culture which is jail, and by the admission of many inmate’s jails indeed produce their own
In an article by Time titled “25 Most Influential Hispanics in America”, Mel Martinez was called “perhaps the U.S.'s most important Hispanic lawmaker”. Martinez was the secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development from 2001-2003 under George W Bush, served in congress, was the mayor of Orange County, and the first Cuban-American to serve in the president’s cabinet. Martinez is best known for his actions to try to end the overwhelming homelessness rates. Mel Martinez is a highly influential Hispanic-American that has shaped Florida in many ways, has proven this point with his actions of helping America’s severe homelessness and showing that a Cuban-American immigrant can make difference.
Roberto Clemente was a famous pirates player who is remembered for his activism and humanitarianism. He was a Puerto Rican who loved his homeland and family. He wanted his wife to go to Puerto Rico while she was pregnant so his children could be born in Puerto Rico. He was a great humanitarian and helped people whenever he could He was also one of the first Spanish people in baseball which was a white person's sport at the time. The art of Fernando Botero is widely known, revered, paraphrased, imitated and copied, For many, his characteristic rounded, sensuous forms of the human figure, animals, still lifes and landscapes represent the most easily identifiable examples of the modern art of Latin America. For others, he is a cultural hero.To travel with Botero in his native Colombia is to come to realize that he is often seen less as an artist and more as a popular cult figure. In his native Medellín he is mobbed by people wanting to see him, touch him or have him sign his name to whatever substance they happen to be carrying. On the other hand, Botero's work has been discredited by those theorists of modern art whose tastes are dictated more
The movie “Gattaca” is a sci-fi movie that takes place in “the not-too-distant” future, where genetic engineering of humans is common. In this sci-fi future, class differences are construct is primarily determined by your DNA. In the movie society’s culture is ingrained with eugenics, evident by the clear institutionalized discrimination. Eugenics is a set of beliefs and practices that aim at improving the genetic quality of the human population. Eugenics is not a “new” concept, people have been discriminating based on looks ever since prehistoric times. The movie inspired me to do some research on popular eugenics movements in the post-industrial age (1850-present). My primary goal of was to identify the motives behind early eugenics
Jimmy Santiago Baca is a prime example of the impact that can be extracted from a strong and caring passion towards an education. Baca was passionate in learning how to read when he was in prison, and he eventually achieved that goal. With his passion fueling his career, Baca would go on to become a poet, writer, and education activists for diverse classrooms. Baca is fueled by improving the conditions of those who feel like they have hit rock bottom like he once was. Several books were written from Baca’s backstory in hopes that people would learn from his mistakes and lessons learned within his lifetime. One of the subject areas that Baca has spent a good amount of his life promoting and discussing is the importance of education. Baca wrote a collection of stories that showed his experiences where people attempted to keep him down, but Baca’s drive to continue to expand and learn prevented him from staying down. This collection of stories is called “Stories from the Edge,” and Baca decided to add something extra with this book. He decided to go into a classroom with diverse students and he shared his stories from the book in greater detail. There were open discussions with the students about how his stories related to the students lives. After the student group left, Baca met with the teachers that aided with the student interaction, and they discussed the teaching methods that fuel the students motivation to learn. Jimmy Baca clearly is passionate in aiding individuals
In this image that Frank Romero made that is called "Going to the Olympics " I see a lot of beautiful colors. It is very colorful and has a lot of symbols like a stamp from the Olympics, a horse, the new years blimp, and a guy that is wrestling. All of those symbols are from the Olympics. I also see a lot of cars in this picture and cars in Los Angeles means either you love your car a lot and you would do anything to fix it or there might be a lot of traffic on the freeway. Once you see the shiny red lights on the freeway and they are not moving you know there are going to be a lot of traffic until you get to your destination. The cars have hearts on top so it does mean a lot of people love their cars. In Los Angeles there is a lot of palm trees. Everywhere you go you are going to see them. You see them in the streets or there is one close by from where you live. Los Angeles has a lot of palm trees.
Most people can not imagine being in a prison cell, with no windows, no fresh air, no socialization, and with all hope gone. They are in total isolation. Most would not consider that an illiterate man could embrace education and become a world famous poet in such circumstances. However, in Jimmy Santiago Baca’s case, he describes his five year experience in prison as educational and positive, despite the real horrors he met there. In Baca’s memoir, A Place to Stand, he brings his readers through his journey, of a transformation in life of a man in Florence State Prison in Arizona during the 1970’s. The author reveals his long ongoing saga of imprisonment with vivid detail of his experience, and personal conflicts he had to overcome throughout
My introduction to the work of Alex Turner not only invoked an emotional response out of me like no other artist had previously done, but also greatly inspired me to take my hobby of writing seriously. I vividly remember the day a friend of mine recommended I check out the band that Alex Turner fronts,
The movie demonstrates a few details of how Middle Eastern is like, what they do and their culture. It show how how many men are barbaric and in the beginning of the movie you see how lower class oriental men are shown with swords and limited clothing, They are men that are ready to use their weapons at any time. For example when Jasmine fleas from the palace, she steals an apple and gives it to a poor little boy and when the merchant mean see that they start to get violent with her. One of the merchant men say “you know what happen when people steal” he emphasis the punishment is that whoever steals get their hands cut off. This shows how violent people are in this community.
We left Liberia early in the morning and flew to David, essentially the first stop after the border between Costa Rica and Panama. This was simply a fuel and food stop. Once again, the difference between general aviation in Latin America and the United States was readily apparent. In the United States, if you wish, you can just hop on an airplane and go. Unless you elect to, you are not required to file a flight plan, you are not required to check the weather, and you are not even obligated to talk to anyone if you don’t care to. Obviously, it is advantageous to follow those procedures; however, there is no obligation to do so. Throughout the trip, Miguel and I were required to follow those protocols and to exercise great care not to deviate
Sean Duffy claims that the numerous conflicting and exaggerated accounts surrounding the life of Boru make it so that he is no longer Brian Boru the man, he is Brian Boru the myth. The saviour of Ireland or a failure in battle; Brian’s legacy has taken every form. Not only that, but it is one of the most enduring legacies in Irish history
Presley Norton could be summed up in one word, ‘an outcast’. He wasn’t a superstar jock or the next Prime Minister. He could barely keep his grades afloat. If it wasn't for Misty Augustine, Presley would be a drug-fueled freak. Misty is all that Presley has and is always motivating him, even in his darkest times. Presley had experienced it all, bullying, close friends and family lost, loneliness, depression and suicidal thoughts. But even through his darkest times, Misty was always there for him. High School was the bearer of these burdens and Presley will never forget that. Everyone tells you that high school is all about education and making new friends but the difficult and agonising truth is that high school lives off rumors and lies. Grade 11 was the year that Presley and Misty got right in the middle of that web of
Boanaa Mohamed envisioned a demand for Islamic Cinema. This movie with due purpose makes you think. It puts the radicalization issue into perspective. We as a community should rise to accommodate to our brothers and sisters regardless of their circumstance in a way that wouldn’t deviate them to seek affiliation with extremist groups through online platforms. The reality is one second you are recording a message of hate for the west and the next second you cry yourself to sleep fully knowing that you are in a state of no return. This movie also illustrates extremism is not picture perfect as extremists preach.
