I strongly believe health is the center of life. During my job shadowing, I observed that many patients want to work, but they couldn’t because of their health conditions. One of the patients told the provider that he really wanted to work but he couldn’t due to his back injury. Most people get their purpose from jobs, and the patient lost his job. If people are healthy, they will be more likely to contribute to their society. This inspired me to prevent illness for people to have a healthier life. I also believe in preventive medicine. I want to stop deaths that shouldn’t have to happen. Cancer from smoking and obesity are something we can prevent. My desire is to educate patients on how to prevent their illness. During my job shadowing, I discussed disease processes with the provider about an obese patient. The provider tested for hormones to see if there was anything that caused him to keep gaining weight. After we ran the test, the results showed he gained weight from not eating healthily and not doing daily exercise. Because of my experiences, I strongly believe in preventative medicine. Lastly, I believe everyone should be treated the same when it comes to their …show more content…
As a person who wants to practice medicine in an underserved population, my goal is to understand the healthcare context and cultural perceptions in the local community. It is important to understand people’s psychology when treating them. Lastly, I want to become excellent at communication and interpersonal skills. When working in medicine, it is important to express kindness to people. People go their doctor when they don’t feel good. The patient will feel happier if the provider has good interpersonal skills. With knowledge from your program, I can gain communication and clinical
Not only do I have a good understanding of the patient population I want to work with, I want to help reshape healthcare. I particularly want to improve the access of primary care to medically underserved populations. Everyone deserves equal access to healthcare and there should be no disparity in the quality of care provided. Therefore, each additional encounter I had with a PA or a patient has elevated my passion for helping people in need.
Naidoo and Wills(2001, p.47) “Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity’ - WHO (1946).” This definition falls into a holistic way of defining health, which believes that there are more areas to look at when thinking of health than just simply the absence of a disease. It considers the cause of why someone is ill and not just simply about ’fixing it’.
health is necessary to have when dealing with a life changing disease, most people cannot keep
Shadowing physicians with drastically different doctoring styles and personalities helped me understand more than just the daily workload but also which doctoring style I prefer. I also learned that physicians need to work as a team with other physicians, nurses, medical staff and patients. I glimpsed at their busy schedules and found that physicians worked in the wards and in the clinic, took on-call duties every other weekend, filed their own billing and charting, covered each other, while still making time for their families. Being exposed to this has helped solidify my aspirations to one day become an effective and balanced physician. I aspire to be a physician who remembers the details, takes time to discuss treatment, and has a broad
The advisor that I chose to shadow was Joseph Sandoval, an EOP&S Counselor at East Los Angeles College. My reasoning for choosing to shadow Joseph was a result of my curiosity of getting to know how large program like EOP&S function and my previous academic advising experience I have with him. I was fortune to be apart of the advising sessions with Joseph, as the range from one extreme case to a not so extreme case. The shadowing experience provided a rich source how material we discuss in class is applicable in real life situation. Within this paper I plan to discuss briefly what I learn from my interview with Joseph then talk about my observations of the three advising sessions I was apart of.
Therefore, last year, I connected with other soon-graduating pre-health students to start Pre-Health Society. In the past year, we have mentored four students to apply and also be accepted to a program that supports underrepresented minorities in medicine and dentistry, hosted workshops to expose to students their intended fields (suturing workshops, etc.) and many others.”
This amazing program will give me a jumpstart on my medical career. With this I will enable to work as medical assistant, far younger than most people. Furthermore, the job will give me experience in the medical field that will help me gain a better understanding of the field. Also, experience is not an easy thing to come by and it will be limited opportunity. Of course this job will be as I’m in college working towards my bachelor’s degree in Psychology.
The medical field has always been very interesting to me. I find the way the human body works to be so intriguing and I jump at any chance to learn something new about it. Throughout my years in college I have had the time to focus on what I find most interesting and what direction I want to take my career in. While doing my research, I came across this program and I feel I would be a great fit. In this essay I will discuss the different traits I think are needed to be successful in this field and what skills I will be able to bring to this profession.
I did my job shadowing on the Monday of fall break at the Semmes Murphey place with Marilyn Newson. I learned so much more about this new side of nursing I did not know that even existed. Marilyn job title is an infusion nurse manager where she gives medicine and fluids to patients through injections. She is the only one with this job title in the clinic so she is a manger as well. When I first entered the room I noticed that it was set up just like a dialysis place would be the recliner chairs and IV backs to the side and TV playing.
During the program I did research and shadowed, but the most memorable part of the program was following their NeighboorhoodHELP program. The program allows for medical students to provide care to households in the Miami community while allowing them to see the harsh realities of their community. Being a part of that experience was very transformative because it gave me first hand experience with the health disparities in underserved communities. The families had limited health literacy, did not have health insurance, or lived in a food desert. Their ability to make healthy choices or receive proper health care was diminished. The underserved population’s level of health literacy is one factor that keeps these health disparities in our communities a constant. A future goal of mine, as a physician, is to educate and communicate well with my patients. Trying to give them a better insight in making healthier lifestyle choices so they can prevent a number of diseases. During my time in Miami I also had the opportunity to participate in cooking classes for diabetes patients and grade school children. Implementing programs that would increase the access and awareness of healthy food options is something that I want to be a part of in
Although I had my doubts about applying to this program, I decided to take the opportunity and apply. This has become one of my proudest academic achievements! The reason being that this program has exposed me to different resources that will be useful in my pursuit of a medical career. The most important focus that the program workshops, coordinators and faculty spoke about was the importance of believing in that all the participants could enter medical schools and one day become doctors. The experience I gained from this program will impact the rest of my academic career because I have gained valuable knowledge about how to become a leader in medicine and my community. The program also focused on participants gaining resources and support from staff and faculty from Stanford University and other community
I have an desire to practice medicine in a underserved community because I have found during my various community service activities that I enjoy making a difference in an community that desperately seek adequate care and attention. I discovered that the disadvantage community are extremely grateful and well deserving. I am also passionate about serving disadvantaged communities through making sure they receive the most state-of-the-art care and latest medical
When It comes to our health and wellness it is a large factor that influences so many different aspects of our life than what individuals really believe it does. It influences the longevity of our lives, whether we will develop preventable chronic diseases throughout our lives. It influences what type of examples that we are leading for our children and families. It even influences our work performance and how well our companies will be able to provide affordable health care to their employees and also to their families. When employees engage in a healthy lifestyle and make better health decisions it reduces the demands for health care.
Throughout my education in the field of public health, my philosophy has changed many times, and throughout this particular course, it has changed even more. A philosophy of mine both as an individual and professional is that everyone should have access to health equity. I say health equity because, as we know, where you live, work, and community that you frequent have a lot to do with your health. America is the most wealthy country in the world and yet, our health suffers because of lack of health care, and education.
We get distracted very easily and believe that everything else is more important than them. We need to keep us as the top priority, yet when certain situations come up, it is difficult. For example, I know that I need at least 8 hours of sleep, but if someone needs me, I stay awake even though in the morning, it affects me negatively. Our society seems to only focus on people’s physical well-being, which in my opinion is wrong. A person can be the acceptable weight that he or she supposed to be and be unhealthy in other areas. Every dimension of health affects us without anyone realizing it. If our society focused on all dimensions, I believe it would be different for the better. In a sense, an individual has a responsibility to society to become healthy. If every person is healthy, our economy will improve greatly because most money wouldn’t be spent on medical costs. But, my health should only depend on me not anyone else. I believe that I have greater responsibility to myself because I have to live with the negative effects of being unhealthy. If everyone takes part in becoming healthy in all aspects, it could be beneficial to our
