John is very allergic. Marie, John's friend since 2nd grade, always carries around an Epipen for him.
He's a whole 3 months older than Marie, but Marie is 8 inches taller than him. Sometimes they get on each other's nerves about this. John gets jealous of Marie and her extremely tolerant parents, that is, until he remembers that she's saved his life too many times to count. John aspires to be an astronomer, his parents think this is silly, but
Marie supports him greatly. She's enthusiastic about it, even though whenever he tries explains it to her, she somehow ends up even more confused than she was before. She helps him to keep track of the upcoming comets, meteor showers, eclipses, and such. Usually, on these days, they go out stargazing

Marie tried to make it up to him, but he was still really bummed about not being considered eligible for the soccer team. John's parents don't let him up on the rooftop anymore (he still sneaks out there from time to time.) Marie's parents change the subject whenever it's brought up. Marie has grown to love flowers and gardening even though art is (and always will be, by far) her favorite pastime. She knows this can probably only be her hobby and not an actual job, but she still loves it and pursues it. She practices by stepping outside and drawing scenery, sketching the faces of random strangers, flowers, or John. This earns her some weird looks. In fact, Marie's parents are florists much to the demise of John's horrible allergies. Thankfully, this is only in their shop and not at their house. John likes to sleep over at Marie's house. Her family has more income than his, and at Marie's house, he's allowed to go up on the rooftop. John used to get bullied for his height, but Marie always backed him up. Both John and Marie has skipped a grade. Marie skipped 3rd grade and John skipped 8th, in a desperate and late attempt to win himself back his rightful place alongside Marie in the same grade level.
After they had talked about her past, she began to go crazy and started drinking rum like an alcoholic. Since he didn’t love Antoinette he tried to break her up by calling her Marionette and Bertha and then sleeping with Amelie for Antoinette to hear. Christophine says that he tried to break her up because he is jealous that she is better than him because doesn’t care all about money. He is unhappy with her but is still determined to stay because he is afraid of scandal. He does not want people making fun of him and laughing for marrying her in the first place even though everyone already is. He also is afraid of what people will say about him if they find out they separate. Antoinette and her husband leave Jamaica. When they get to their destination, her husband pays Grace not to gossip about anything and locks Antoinette in a room with Grace with the purpose that no one will know their business. He doesn’t want scandal and he is now a wealthy man so he got what he wanted in the end. Her husband took full advantage of her weaknesses to gain control and
In addition, Marie’s braveness comes out the way she deals with Sister Leopolda who is an old grizzled nun with an uncanny sixth sense for the presence of the devil. When Marie arrives and starts taking classes, she faces total opposition from Sister Leopolda. Sister Leopolda sometimes sniffs devil out of the dark corners of her classroom. Marie spends time performing chores for the nun but Sister Leopolda teaches her that she will always struggle to keep the devil out of her heart. Marie’s success at the convent is dependent on her relationship with Sister Leopolda. For Marie, her struggle against the nun is a larger than life; battle of good versus evil. Marie believes that she stands out from the rest of the students. What begins as Marie’s fear of the devil’s influence becomes a more complex understanding of how a fear can coexist with desire. Sister Leopolda soon becomes a stand in for the devil as she and Marie face off with each other. At first, Marie is abused only mentally by Sister Leopolda, but later on she is physically abused. For example, one day Sister Leopolda stabs Marie through the hand and
John did have strict parents, and that is one reason that lead to all the bad choices that where being made in his teenage year. Many children do the opposite of what the parents tell them and some parents are not aware of their actions and due to this fact more children get in trouble. Some additional activities that the children did were daredevil stunts, bb gun wars, steal liquor and even shoplifting contest.
Also proving his compassion, towards the end of the novel, he disobeys military orders to save Marie Laure. He does this because he sees his younger sister Jutta in her. Similarly, Marie Laure lost her mother at birth. So, her relationship with her father was always strong. Marie Laure even says: “He made her the glowing center of his life; he made me feel as if every step she took was important.”
Marie 's vision and faith during her childhood guided her at crucial points for the rest of her life. She practices the compassion that her vision has taught her when she does things like take in children that have no homes, making her participation in traditional rituals (typically of women) blatantly obvious. The most significant person she 's taken in has been June Kashpaw. Marie let her usually rough exterior crumble down long enough to be loving towards June after a tough confrontation between the two, saying, “You can be my girl and live here.” (85) Unfortunately, June never truly enjoyed living with Marie, so she later on left to live with Eli Kashpaw, Nectors brother. As Marie grew older, she and Lulu Lamartine, her ex rival, eventually learn to coexist with each other even after all of the betrayal and unfaithfulness that was shown within the “love triangle” of Nector, Marie, and Lulu.
John’s inclusion has proven to be the right choice for him so far, and John is thriving in school.
John never steps foot inside the kitchen unless he really needed to, which is like never. That’s why Anna said that’s her sanctuary.”

After being made a cuckold by Alisoun and Nicholas and falling for the second flood scheme, John is mocked by his neighbors, townspeople, Alisoun, and Nicholas for his naivety and
While reading So Much Closer I realized that my favorite character is John Dalton. John is unlike all the other characters in the book, he is very kind, sweet and unique. He cares so much for Brooke even when she doesn’t like him. According to the book, it states, “ So how incredible is it that John was able to do all of those things without telling me how he felt? It must have been really hard for him to put my needs before his own. And that makes him even more amazing than I realized.” This demonstrates that John puts Brooke’s needs before his, he is so caring and is always there for her. John also has Dysgraphia ( a disease when someone has the inability to write coherently) so he tries really hard to keep his grades up and he tries hard
With just this slight confrontation so many doors opened up between both the girls. Jean in a way hinted at her family life and how she cannot go anywhere else, or she is not comfortable going anywhere else. Also in the same excerpt she mentions how her parents do not care about what she does. As a fourteen-year-old girl that is a very odd thing to say especially being an only child, but her parents are to focused on their own problems to raise and help develop her into a strong young lady.
John is a complicated guy. First of all, he has a problem with authority. He is constantly arguing with his father. Regardless of disliking authority and school, he is intelligent and can get good grades when he wants to. John is six feet tall with longish brown hair and blue eyes. He is only fifteen but already is a heavy drinker and smoker.
