In Memory of John B. Watson
A Review of Johns life and accomplishments John B. Watson was born on January 9th in the year of 1878 in Travelers Rest, South Carolina. He was named after a prominent Baptist minister in hope that it would help him receive the call to become a preacher of gospel. He grew up in Greenville, South Carolina with his mother and father and three older siblings. The Watson Family was very poor, they claimed that the family lost their wealth in the Civil War. John’s mother Emma was very religious, her soul focus was on her farm, her kids and her religion. The Watsons attended the local Baptist church in their home town. In their home God and the Devil played a major role in their everyday lives. In his upbringing he went through harsh religious training that later led him to have a huge hatred to all forms of religion and became atheist. John took after his father in many aspects for instance like his father he swore and drank a lot, Watsons favorite drink was bourbon whiskey. Watson was a lady’s man and like his father he loved women. With help of his teacher Gordon Moore he was able to turn his life around, with this help John was able to better his education and leave Furman University and move to the University of Chicago. When he got to the University he became interested in the firld of psychology and studying animals.( Lecture notes on John B. Watson) In 1901 John got married to Mary Ickes and together they had a daughter, Mary also known as Polly and a son named John. Watson subjected his kids to a harsh upbringing and scheduled feeding and no physical affection routine. Later on in their lives his children were highly affected by their childhood.
