John Hanson The First President

The first five presidents of the United States impacted the United States greatly and their names were George Washington, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, and James Monroe. The president I think that impacted the U.S the most was George Washington who was in office for eight years (1789-1797). George Washington who was the commander in chief and led the army in the Revolutionary War and gained freedom from Great Britain at that time there was thirteen colonies in the United States. In 1783 George Washington signed a peace treaty with Great Britain. John Adams which was the second president to be elected who was vice president at first for eight years (1789-1796) soon became president for four years (1797-1801). John Adams strengthened the central government by making the army stronger and he signed a law which is called the “Act for the Sick” which let government marine hospital service. Thomas Jefferson which was the third president was one of the more important presidents for the United States, he was one of the authors of the Declaration of Independence and he also organized the Louisiana Purchase which doubled the country known as the United States. James Madison Jr. known as the fourth president promoted the United States Constitution and the Bill of Rights. James Monroe which was the fifth president of the United States who was in office for eight years (1817-1825) and was the last president that was in the Virginia Dynasty and the Republican Generation.

Between the years of 1789 – 1800, there were two people given the job of being the President of these United States of America, George Washington, the first president, and John Adams, the second president. Between the years of 1789 – 1800, the United States of America was a very young country who was searching for its identity, a leader, and an economic basis on which to run the country. Before, 1789, when George Washington took office, the Constitution of the United States was a very new document. He became president in 1796, where George left the country divided because of Hamilton and Jefferson. One of the first things he does as president is looks at the problem at hand almost all the U.S. citizens want to go to war with either France or England. John sees that we would not win either way because we have money and no army/navy. While see these problems he comes up with the XYZ affair where he will send out three people John Marshall, Elbridge Gerry, and Charles Pinkney. The three of them went to France to try and convince them to stop blowing up our ships. The French just react as give us 12 million dollars and we will stop. After the citizens of the U.S. hear the news they all agree hey want to fight against France. Still John sees no money change and no arm or navy change, he could not see how we would win or succeed in any way. So John came up with the Alien and Sedition Act which made anybody that was not a legal citizen of the U.S. they could no longer talk about the war or tany fighting, if they did they would get deported and kicked out. Then he came up with the Kentucky and Virginia Resolution which is them saying they have the ability to not follow the law if it is thought to be

Thomas Jefferson was the third American President. Due to the fact that he was such an early President, he influenced our political system greatly, both in the short and long term with his seemingly quiet approach to congressional matters. During his presidency, many things happened that changed the United States as we know it. He coordinated the Louisiana Purchase, assisted in implementing the twelfth amendment, formed the character of the modern American President, and cut the U.S.’s war debt by a third.

On September 27, 1722, Samuel Adams was born in Boston, Massachusetts. Adams attended and later graduated with a master’s degree from Harvard College in 1740. At Harvard College Adams studied law, but later decided to pursue politics. He started off his career as a tax-collector in Massachusetts, which he was not a very good one. Adams was elected to the Massachusetts Assembly in 1765, as a leader of the radical party. In 1774 he was elected to the First Continental Congress, then in 1775 he was elected again to be on the Second Continental Congress. Later he proudly signed his name to the Declaration of Independence in 1776. Before retiring in 1797, he served as lieutenant governor and governor of Massachusetts. Samuel Adams was raised on strict Puritan values, which are shown through his work.

All it took was a proposition, an idea by a Virginia delegate by the name of Thomas Jefferson. Thomas Jefferson was born on April 13, 1743 in Shadwell, Virginia into a wealthy and distinguished family. Jefferson served his country for over five decades, he was a public official, philosopher, historian and even a plantation owner. His interests in law led him to serve the local government as a magistrate, county lieutenant and as a member of the House of Burgesses. Some of Thomas Jefferson 's major accomplishments and contributions include , but are not limited to the Louisiana Purchase in 1803 , his support towards the Lewis and Clark Expedition, abolishing, the slave trade,his views on what is now called the Northwest Ordinance and of course, his presidency.

John Hancock was born braintree on january 23 and he was raised by his aunt and uncle Hancock. After graduating from Harvard college in 1754 hancock went to work for his uncle. Hancock would later earn a reputation for being generous and using his personal wealth for public projects however, he also received criticism from some people, including fellow Revolutionary leader Samuel Adams. In 1775 Hancock married Dorothy Quincy (1747-1830) the daughter of Boston merchant and magistrate.

In 1776, the American people declared themselves an independent nation. The American people were traumatized by the Revolution and feared a strong central government. This led to their first attempt at a government, the Articles of Confederation, which ultimately failed. After this let down of a government, the founding fathers wrote the Declaration of Independence, which would become the law of the American land. John Adams and Thomas Jefferson were two influential individuals, who were originally involved in the writing of the Declaration of Independence. Both were involved in the political side of the Revolutionary war, but when speaking of it, told alternate versions of the war. As they approached the end of their lives, Thomas Jefferson and John Adams dedicated themselves to telling extremely differentiating versions of the Revolutionary War; Jefferson focusing on the glory and Adams focusing on the hardships, while Jefferson’s version is the only one recorded in the textbooks students use today.

Before the 1790s, the many foreign and domestic events that had taken place helped construct America into the republic it is today and has helped shape American politics. However all the events that had occurred played a significant role in the construction, the most influential ones include Jay's treaty, Pinckney's Treaty, the alien and sedition acts, along with Hamilton's financial plan. Foreign affairs had really affected American politics before the 1790s, however the most influential one’s would have to be Jay’s treaty and Pinckney's treaty.
