John Proctor may seem like an innocent man that you should feel sorry for when he is accused. He has two children, a beautiful wife and a bunch of land. But, he has a secret. A secret with Abigal WIlliams. I feel that John Proctor was the reason the Salem Witch Trials started, because he had an affair with Abigal and kicked her to the side afterwards causing her to seek revenge. Going into depth, the affair was illegal to begin with. Not only was Abigal a child, but he was married! She was basically a maid for the Proctor’s and sometime during that time he must’ve seduced her. She fell for him after that and thought he truly loved her. She was willing to do whatever it took (after she was caught dancing in the woods) to not only save herself
How could you not believe the words of John Proctor? Why the man with the purest name in Salem throw away his good name after claiming to be an adulterer? It is in my good opinion that Abigail Williams seeks vengeance on John Proctor for taking her innocence. Elizabeth lied to protect her husband, just like any women would lie to protect her family life, children and husband. Even someone like Goody Proctor, who has never told a lie before. This is a natural lie to tell. I beg of you, your Honour, to reconsider your decision on sending Elizabeth to the jailhouse. You must ensure that this trial is fair. Telling Proctor and Abigail to stand with their backs facing Elizabeth was not a fair way to question her. You are a noble judge. We saw John Proctor break down in court and this is not the behavior of a man who is trying to deceive or undermine the court or the trial. Your Excellency, Proctor is a well-respected farmer and his wife has no mark upon her name. They are good souls who don 't deserve to be hanged due to the lies of Abigail Williams and the girls. Abigail is hell-bent on seeking vengeance on Proctor. Abigail is comparable to Lucifer. She pulled the wool over your eyes , the girls and even me at the beginning. But I saw this presence and soon will you. She has deceived most people in the village including you. I can see she has played
To John the affair was just a one time thing and he never wanted it to be brought back up again. But for Abigail it was commitment, since they had the affair then she saw it as John being with her forever, and she realized that the only way for that to happen was to get Elizabeth out of the picture. So even though John Proctor was a good person because of his one little flaw, big issues appeared.
Many people think that John Proctor was a shame of a husband because of the affair he had with Abigail Williams. I agree, his decision to have an affair with Abigail was a despicable thing to do, especially for his wife Elizabeth. John
“I am not worth the dust on the feet of them that hang.” John Proctor is the protagonist of the Crusible, though for the first two acts, he does little to effect the flow of the story as the reader is introduced to their setting. One is thrown into Salem village as the sparks of accuzations begin to fly setting ablaze paranoya in the name of witchcraft. Abigail Williams, our antagonist uses a lie to cover up her mistakes and decides to get something out of it when she discovers that people are ignorant enough to believe her. She takes the chance to throw allegations of witchery onto John’s innocent wife, Elizabeth. The thrust behind this action comes from the fact that a year earlier she had found her way into John Proctor’s arms and with his wife out of the picture, they could dance together on her grave… though Abigail had been in his arms, she had never been in his heart. Abigail would loose complete control of her seemingly simple scheme as she would loose her only purpose she had left in life- John. John Proctors downfall occurs before our story ever begins. We watch his once stregnths become his weaknesses. The standards he held for himself were shattered and he fumbled in picking up the pieces. His downfall did not end his story, but began it as he would have to rebuild his honor and self respect when it mattered the most.
John Proctor at that point was probably then on Giles Corey's bad side. Proctor must have been on others bad side as well. When proctor was accused of witchcraft not many stood up to tell the courts no he's not a witch everyone kept faking that he was or even admitting that they were witches. The girls who had started the Salem witch trials were the ones letting the court know who did witch craft and who did not had known the whole time witchcraft was no such thing but they didn't care . The end resulted to Proctor was the one who was speaking to the devil. Abigail Williams one of the girls who were ones pointing out people who spoke with the devil, she loved John Proctor and wanted him all to herself but when he got accused she fled and took a boat and left. Once that happened people slowly started catching on that this was all just a
John proctor was a successful farmer who lived outside of town, Married to his wife Elizabeth Proctor. John Proctor was called over to the home of reverend parris to help determine if Abigail ,who is the niece of reverend parris, Is In fact a witch. John proctor then realizes that the rumors are true of the witchcraft talk that his has heard around town. John proctor knows the truth about Abigail but does not tell. Why? John Proctor committed MAL behavior with Abigail, He had an affair with a 17 year old girl while married to his wife Elizabeth. He knows that if he tells the truth about Abigail being a witch that the truth will come out about him and his affair, so he tells lies to keep
In The Crucible reputation is considered very important to maintain highly, a handful of the characters choose to sacrifice their lives and freedom in order to uphold their reputation.
She takes all of her uncle’s money, goes to where Proctor is kept and tries to persuade him to elope with her. Proctor refuses, he wouldn’t betray his wife again. Abigail tries numerous times to influence Protector and commit a sin, everybody sins. Proctor loved his children and he was not going to elope with an insane person who accused his wife. He changed himself and put others before him.
Proctor brace that a person’s honor, name, and the principles by which he lives are more important than even life itself. He proves that by proving that statement true, by diying to brace his name, honor, and the principles by which he lives. Other ways that he proved that too, is by taking importance of his friends’ opinion, and showing guilt of the sinning he has done; the affair with
There are many factors that play a role in cause of the Salem witch trials, but there are three characters that are most responsible for the Salem witch trials in The Crucible; Abigail Williams, John Proctor, and Reverend Hale. Abigail Williams starts the whole thing wanting John Proctor. John Proctor knows what Abigail did but refuses to speak up. Reverend Hale uses his respected authority to accuse the innocent people of Salem.
John Proctor could also be considered to be the person most responsible for the chaotic witchcraft situation by the end of act 1 in The Crucible. Many people argue that Proctor is responsible because he has an affair with Abigail behind his wife's back. She was his family servant. John is an adult and Abigail is just a teenager. When Elizabeth Proctor finds out about the affair, she ends up firing Abigail. Proctor told Abigail, “Abby, I never give you hope to wait for me” (1099). John does not want Abigail in the way that she wants him. His words affected Abigail in a way that caused her to want to get rid of Elizabeth so she can have his attention. John is a grown man that should have known better, therefore Abigail wouldn't of felt the pain
John Proctor in the crucible “No amount of guilt can change the the past and no amount of worrying can change the future”- Anonymous. This is saying that no matter how guilty you feel about something you did in the past can you can't go back to fix something you did. Also saying that no matter how much you worry about something whatever is gonna happen will happen either way, and there is nothing you can do about it. This relates to John Proctor because he eventually figured out that no matter how guilty he felt about his affair with Abigail he couldn't go back and undo what he already done and no matter how much he worried about what was going to happen to him he couldn't change it. John Proctor was a good man that felt guilt about his mistakes, and in the end died knowing he was a good man.
John Proctor and I. “God is dead!” This quote was said by John Proctor a character from The Crucible, while he was being accused of witchcraft. John Proctor is a character from The Crucible, that is looked at as a sinner and an outcast. He had an affair with his seventeen year old servant, who accuses his wife of witchcraft.
Often, Proctor tended to brush off witchcraft and wanted to pretend it did not happen. Not everyone in Salem supported the witch trials. Even though John Proctor was a rich farmer, he did not believe in the trials. Proctor was motivated to not believe in the trials, even when Rebecca Nurse was accused of witchcraft. Proctors yells out, “Because it is my name! Because I cannot have another in my life! Because I lie and sign myself to lies! Because I am not worth the dust on the feet of them that hang! How may I live without my name? I have given you my soul; leave me my name!” (Miller 133). Proctor says this to show that he has told all the truth and shown his integrity, he just wants his name to be cleared. In the end, Proctors comments denouncing witchcraft, were used against him. Motivated, Proctor continues to call out how unfair the court was when handling the proceedings. He explains that torment and pain are used to get answers and confessions out of the people, and how he does not believe that to be a fair trial. John Proctor even goes as far as to write a letter, but it was not written in time to have an effect on the trials. Proctor was motivated to denounce the trials and stay away from witchcraft hysteria, but he was also motivated to find the false information and uncover
John, Why is it that I stay here in this horrid dark place knowing only hypocrites? I cannot bear the crude stares they give me anymore. Now that you are gone I'm slowly being strangled from what others fear. They are here torturing me in my mind whilst nothing but spoken words come from their mouths. Aye! If I live the rest of my life, if not murdered, I will cry out witchery, until the last hypocrite is dead and their souls turn to evil. I never met any of this to happen to you, I only wanted good for you. I wanted you, and for us to be happy again as we once were. Now all I see is deceiving people. They have all turned on me yet my spirit, my soul.. has all changed utterly for you John Proctor, and only for you my love.
