My favorite character in this book would have to be Peter. He was a little bit of a tough guy yet timid, but wasn’t afraid to fight for his siblings lives. Peter was the oldest amongst his brother and two sisters and was most likely the brains and brawn of the bunch. In this story, Peter has to fight off a wolf to test his courage or, in Aslan’s words, win his spurs. He returns victorious and is knighted by the lion called Aslan. His brother Edmund, a very mischievous boy and a bother to his sisters Lucy and Susan, looks up to Him though he never admits to it. Peter was definitely the highlight of this book.
In John Steinbeck’s Cannery Row, Mack and his ravenous companions depart the inhospitable coastal fog of Monterey, California, and head east toward Carmel Valley, searching for sun.
I wouldn’t recommend this book to the average reader. It is a bit hard to read because the author goes into so much depth that the reader could very often forget the main idea. It is a good, informative book but a bit drawn out.
Many themes were portrayed in Cannery Row. These themes give the play depth and fascination. The three most significant themes thought are Loneliness, Sympathy, and Remuneration, allowing the story to reach many areas in life.
On the other hand, I loved the multiple narratives and how they allowed for the development of the story. Each character developed as an individual, separate and distinct, yet still part of the family and part of the train wreck that let the doomed trek continue.
As night falls on Cannery Row actuality and fear overwhelms the souls as they lay awake at night. At this very moment they are alone to think to ponder their existence their importance their meaning. During the day the things the people of Cannery Row use to fill their void. To give them happiness is gone and for those long hours of the night they are truly alone. The cats, the parties, and companions are gone just for a second. But they return in the morning to calm the weary and the broken spirits of the people in Cannery Row. Each of us just like the people in Cannery Row uses something or someone to compensate for the loneliness in our lives. Money, relationships, and personal struggles are evident and bring about loneliness to
Maybe it's more important to be appreciated than to be wealthy. Cannery Row by John Steinbeck (1945) is one of the most unique of all of the Nobel Prize winning novels. Cannery Row is set in a very poor area of California known as Monterey. It is a small port town south of San Francisco. The time era is post Depression and World War II. The novel is about how lower class people with warm hearts have the ability to create their own heaven on earth. The novel starts out with a group of people known as Mack and the boys. None of these men have jobs, and they all live in a small shack at the end of town. Mack and the boys want to do something nice for their loving friend Doc. Doc is a
Human behavior is a function of the environment that he/she is brought up in because it is the environment that shapes the person’s morals. This statement is openly validated in the novel Cannery Row where an inclusive community is built as a result of good morals that have been developed and shaped by the environment. Cannery Row is novel that was published in 1945 by John Steinbeck in Monterey. It was named after a waterfront street in California which had sardine caning factories. According to Grasse et al (75), fellowship and warm-heartedness is all that is required to form a united and successful community. Wealth is important part of one’s life but it should not take away the person’s happiness. Steinbeck in his work uses the characters of the novel to communicate this message in a clear and understandable manner. The name of the novel matches with the actual meaning that the writer wanted to communicate the readers. He used the name to enable the readers to be able to relate the novel’s actual meaning with authentic opinions.
The characters bring a riveting story to life when reading. Throughout the book, I felt emotions left and right for the characters and what they were going through. There is a lot of mystery and questioning that will be answered later in the book, but once its done, there are still many questions being asked. when I look for a book, that is something that stands out to me because I really want to read more, and when you have that reaction to a book, that means it was worth reading. I found this book remarkable because of the behaviors, characteristics, and decisions that the characters make, and I recommend this book to everyone, even if they don’t like to
The doctor was very serious about caring for his patients, he was also very skilled and knowledgeable about treatments for when one of his patients was sick with cancer.
An omniscient narrator carries its audience through the eccentric tale of the town of Cannery Row and all of its strange idiosyncrasies. Cannery Row is an aberrant novella written by John Steinbeck in 1945, and it is unlike any other story of its time. Set in the town of Cannery Row in Monterey, California during the Great Depression, Steinbeck writes about a diverse community of men and women who all struggle with their own mundane tragedies. He creates the world of Cannery Row through his own unique form and style in which he continually interrupts his own narration to piece together the fictitious, but nonetheless heartbreaking, events of Doc, Dora, Mack and many other misfits. John Steinbeck designed the heavenly paradise of Cannery Row, where good does not always triumph evil, however the two must be balanced, even the most thought out plans may go awry, and even though you may ignore the sorrowful misfortune that surrounds you, you are inescapable of your designed fate.
The reason I have decided to choose this novel is because when I would ask my friends what book I should read this summer almost all of them told me that this book was the best on the list. I was told that it was a really good book and would keep me interested through the whole book.
Despite being excellent in medical practice, Doc Martin is ill-tempered, bad-mannered and without social skills. The villages take offence in his direct and emotionless attitude. The Doc’s poor bedside manner often leaves patients unsatisfied; however, the doc views his approach as professionalism
I liked how in depth the author went into each character. I also liked how the story made you think about what you take for granted. It shows these kids who have gone their whole lives without a bunch of things that we might take for granted here on earth.
The plot was very well written and was easy to be understood. The story was sad, tragic, distressing and a definite tear- jerker. The characters were more human, they were much more flawed, but real. I do like and admire Theresa because of her attitude towards taking care of Kevin, her son. It showed her undying love and passion because even though she is a single parent, she still managed to raise her son. I also like Garrett because he showed how devoted he is to his ex-wife Catherine. He has a very truthful and real attitude just like his well-written letters. The character that I love the most is Jeb Blake, Garret’s father. Even though he only had few exposures in the book, I learned a lot from him especially with his fatherly-advice, his words of wisdom. I can relate to it because just like Garret, I have a father who likes giving advices, who always remind what and what not to do. If I were to choose a third main character it would definitely be Catherine. Although, she was already dead, everything in the novel was because of her, about her, for the sake of
