John Wooden as, a coach, a mentor, a leader, and an individual is someone who I admire and have tried to emulate throughout my career. His approach as a coach should not be isolated and limited for use only on the playing field but should be used for leadership success on a much broader scale. His servant leadership style has contributed to his success on the basketball court and has resulted in his methods being applied throughout organizations worldwide.
Unlike a traditional leadership approach that relies on a top down approach, a servant style of leadership shares power and puts the needs of other individuals at the forefront. Enabling and empowering individuals is the method used to unlock employee’s full potentials and abilities rather

Every team member has a certain potential that is unique and specific to them. As a leader, John Wooden believed that it was his responsibility to unlock that potential. He believed that there were no large tasks rather several small tasks that composed the larger one. His attention to detail and ability to unlock individual potential allowed for the smaller pieces to come together as a unit to address the larger task at hand.
John Wooden’s success came from building his team from the ground up. His attention to detail and instilling the appropriate values and beliefs within his team members allowed them to focus on doing their role well and giving it their best effort. Everyone played a key role in the team’s performance and they were all empowered and encouraged to achieve their own personal greatness. John Wooden did not define success as winning rather the knowledge that he made the effort to teach his team and have them work together at their highest

I need to continue to hone in on members of my team and help them grow individually while taking the time to understand what they need in order to do so. Identification of strengths and weaknesses among all team members will not only help determine how I can help coach and mentor them but also how I delegate work. In order to have my team function at the highest level, I need to understand what each team member has to contribute and play my hand accordingly in order to achieve the best outcome. Knowing that I have put the best team in place and that we are functioning at our highest level, I have achieved success and the metrics, if attainable, will reflect
Simply, servant leaders hold a view as a servant first and leader second (Owens & Hekman, 2012). Moreover, servant leaders emphasize personal responsibility for the organization and all internal and external stakeholders (Peterson, Galvin, & Lange, 2012). As stated, expressing a genuine concern and care for people are a basis of servant leadership. In addition, servant leadership also focuses on the growth of
1. What are David’s greatest strengths as a team leader? Greatest developmental needs? How did these strengths and weaknesses affect David’s ability to build a successful team the first time around?
Servant leadership is an effectual way to motivate the employees. Its unique emphasis on concern for
“Servant Leadership” throughout history has always been a vital concept to grasp as leaders, however the actual term was not coined until the 1970’s by Robert Greenleaf in his essay The Servant as a Leader. Greenleaf depicts the concept of servant leadership as being a servant first meaning the leader is always willing, ready, and eager to assist those around them in order to create the best environment for everyone to work towards achieving goals.

To do that, he needed the capacity to motivate the team, to push them harder to achieve the goals, to make them expect more from themselves and their teammates.
3. Servant leadership is when a leader works not out of his own self-interest, but that of his followers. This is, as claimed by many, the best form of leadership that all should follow. It has been present in the military, specifically the Marine Corps, but
Before the semi-final game against the Soviet Union, Herb gave an incredibly motivating speech. The speech center around how the team needed to believe in each other and believe that they were good enough to come out on top that day because they were. One of the most famous statements from this speech is “great moments are born from great opportunity.” He made every single person in that locker room believe in each other and that is by far one of the best ways a coach can motivate a team to be more successful than anyone could have
“Ability may get you to the top, but it takes character to keep you there.“ John Robert Wooden is considered the greatest teacher, coach of all time and believed character was the ideal key to success. Wooden taught his players to work and achieve at their best ability. The Pyramid of Success was invented by Wooden that consisted of fifteen qualities that guided his players and others to achieve what they desired. To be able to reach full potential, Wooden’s players had to follow his coaching. As a result of Wooden building character in his men, they listened and followed the rules which allowed them to focus on their necessity.
Organizational consultant S. Chris Edmonds defines servant leadership as “a person's dedication to helping others be their best selves at home, work, and in their community." I totally agree with this philosophy, as I believe an employee will benefit his team and company the most if he can perform the best he can.
Another strength of the team was our ability to come up with a range of different ideas and then working as a team to improve on the ideas, this strength was important to use because we needed to come up with a range of ideas for all of the tasks that we were involved in. if we were unable to come up with a lot of ideas for each task then we may have struggled to complete some of the tasks that we had been set, most of the tasks involved us to work as a team to discuss the ideas that each of us had, we made sure that everyone was listening and participating during each part of the task in which we had to discuss the ideas. The final strength of the team was the overall participation of the team, within all of the tasks every team members made sure that they were participating as much as possible with the role in which they had been set, if all the team members were not participating as much as possible then it could result us in failing some of the tasks that we had been set because in each task we didn’t have a big time limit in which we had to come up with ideas, put these ideas into practice and then come up with any alternative ideas that may be needed in order for us to complete the task.
Wooden never had anything handed to him, he worked hard for everything he had including his unprecedented career success. Wooden believed in the necessity of hard work and practiced what he preached. During a
To overcome these two challenges I had to sell the team on my vision while listening to their ideas. As a team leader, I can assert that achieving my goals is paramount. Yet this doesn’t denote that I would extensively pursue my goals or blindly follow my objectives at all costs. For that reason, I was open to their opinions no matter how different theirs may be from mine. I am proud to say that the outcome of this stage exceeded my expectations; the team was more motivated and evolved from being a group of strangers to a united team with common goals.
Having played a variety of team sports throughout my life, I saw a lot of parallels throughout the class work on team building between positive teamwork and success. Reading Five Dysfunctions of a Team and then applying what we learned from the reading into several team building exercise gave me a unique perspective on how to create and identify key team building skills.
