Personal Philosophy Of Servant Leadership

Over the past six years of my career as a project manager in an IT company, I have been working as a supervisor to manage a team of programmers and designers. Reflecting on this period of time which I have applied my leadership philosophy, I believe the leadership type, servant leadership, aptly describes my leadership style. I agree with what a servant leader stands for, and I aspire to become a better servant leader in the days ahead of me.
Organizational consultant S. Chris Edmonds defines servant leadership as “a person's dedication to helping others be their best selves at home, work, and in their community." I totally agree with this philosophy, as I believe an employee will benefit his team and company the most if he can perform the best he can. …show more content…

Therefore, it is important for me to act as mentors for them, so that they can pick up the skills required in an actual workplace faster. When I serve as their mentors, it also benefits me hugely, as these newcomers often bring new ideas and inspire us to come up with new ways to do our jobs.
The last practice is “hold themselves and others accountable for their commitments.” I find it very important to make sure that all of my team members are crystal clear in knowing what their jobs are, plus what my expectations of them are as well. By clearly defining each member’s job duties and explaining how their leader will measure and evaluate their work deliverables, my team members have very clear and precise goals on what to spend their effort on and what to achieve.
One study found that servant leadership leads to higher levels of commitment to the supervisor and efficiency in work. My experience agrees with this finding.
