Joseph J. Foss is a World War II veteran who was born on April 17, 1915 in South Dakota. He was in the Guadalcanal Campaign as a pilot in the U.S. Marine Corps and served from October 1942 to January 1943. Charles Lindbergh inspired Foss to start flying, so he decided to take flying lessons while receiving a college education at the University of South Dakota. After graduating with a business degree, he enlisted in the Marine Corps. His persistence landed him a position as a fighter pilot and after his training, he became the executive officer of VMF-121 and was subsequently sent to the South Pacific.
