Becoming a man is one of the most important things a boy goes through. It takes many years of hard work and guidance. At the beginning of the movie Friendly Persuasion, Josh Birdwell is still a boy, but as the movie progresses we can follow his steps in becoming a man. The dialogue and events in the movie show us what a man is, how Josh’s father, Jess Birdwell, is an immense influence in his passage into manhood, and how the war affects this voyage. There are couple of things that constitute a man that Josh achieves throughout the movie. One is that a man stands up for his convictions. His wife Eliza, frightened of letting her son go says to him, “Leave Josh at home. He is so young to be exposed to danger.” But Jess just shakes his head and says, “Thee can’t keep him tied to thy apron strings forever. This trip will be good for him.” Jess understands that all children grow up and he is ready to help Josh in his pursuit of manhood. As the war reaches a crisis for the Birdwell family Josh struggles to understand what he should do. He believes he should fight, but is terrified of dying. Jess does not judge him but instead gently imparts wisdom to him. “If there is a sword in thy heart, thee must pull it out and use it,” he tells him. “Josh, thee wants to go out and fight and give thy life for what thee believes. Any of us here is ready to do that. But that’s not what thee will be asked to do. No Josh, what thee will be asked to do now is to kill.” Jess is telling Josh to fight it that is what he believes is right, but he is also showing him the reality of the war. He does not want Josh to naively enter battle, but he does want him to make his own decision. Jess’s guidance and support assist Josh greatly in his attempt at reaching manhood. As the civil war comes nearer and nearer to the Birdwell family, it has a greater and greater impact on Josh’s struggle for manhood.
