Becoming a man is one of the most important things a boy goes through. It takes many years of hard work and guidance. At the beginning of the movie Friendly Persuasion, Josh Birdwell is still a boy, but as the movie progresses we can follow his steps in becoming a man. The dialogue and events in the movie show us what a man is, how Josh’s father, Jess Birdwell, is an immense influence in his passage into manhood, and how the war affects this voyage. There are couple of things that constitute a man that Josh achieves throughout the movie. One is that a man stands up for his convictions. His wife Eliza, frightened of letting her son go says to him, “Leave Josh at home. He is so young to be exposed to danger.” But Jess just shakes his head and says, “Thee can’t keep him tied to thy apron strings forever. This trip will be good for him.” Jess understands that all children grow up and he is ready to help Josh in his pursuit of manhood. As the war reaches a crisis for the Birdwell family Josh struggles to understand what he should do. He believes he should fight, but is terrified of dying. Jess does not judge him but instead gently imparts wisdom to him. “If there is a sword in thy heart, thee must pull it out and use it,” he tells him. “Josh, thee wants to go out and fight and give thy life for what thee believes. Any of us here is ready to do that. But that’s not what thee will be asked to do. No Josh, what thee will be asked to do now is to kill.” Jess is telling Josh to fight it that is what he believes is right, but he is also showing him the reality of the war. He does not want Josh to naively enter battle, but he does want him to make his own decision. Jess’s guidance and support assist Josh greatly in his attempt at reaching manhood. As the civil war comes nearer and nearer to the Birdwell family, it has a greater and greater impact on Josh’s struggle for manhood. 20) O’Brien tells how these young men were drafted which were constantly in fear, they wished to be there obliviously but war takes up all of one’s attention; it played a big role in their life, changing their tactics, personality and becoming a new person. O’Brien uses this to show the stressful moments in war where one has pressure to be alive and in this case to fit in with everyone else and feel part of something, in a lonely place such as the war.
When someone is thinking of a man, what do they think? Strong? Brave? That’s what most people think; in reality that is a very false image. In “Bros Before Hos: The Guy Code,” Michael Kimmel, talks about what it means to be a man and what it takes to be a man in today’s world. Men are pressured into what they “should” be. If they don’t follow certain unwritten rules, which include: not asking for directions, not giving up, not showing fear, or any signs of emotional weakness, such as tears; they are considered less than a man, a wimp. A real man must be aggressive and brave, he must defend his territory: status, family, possessions. Men blindly follow the Guy Code, they must comply in order to be part of the pack, to fit in.
In life, there are many decisions that everyone must make. And with decision-making comes consequences, some that we are ready for , and some that we may not be ready for. The author of ' The Man Who Was Almost a Man,' Richard Wright, portrays a young man who wants to be a man, but shows that he is clearly unprepared for manhood and the consequences that come with that responsibility. Through decision making based on self interest, wanting to gain respect from his family, and wanting to prove his dignity, Richard Wright brings forth the main character, Dave, a seventeen year old boy, whose actions show that he is only 'almost a man.'

The Man Who Was Almost a Man, tells the story of a young seventeen year old teenager, named Dave Saunders, who finds himself struggling with the need to be taken seriously as an adult, while still being seen by his community, as merely a boy. Published in 1961 and written by Richard Wright, this short story focuses on the common struggle of young African American men in the South trying to find their identity outside of the box that the United States society put them in at the time. Dave felt that in order to prove that he was a man; in order to receive the respect he thought he deserved from Black and White Americans alike, he needed to purchase a gun. This, of course, proved to be of more harm than good, as Dave found himself incapable of using the gun correctly, and what resulted was the death of his employer’s mule. Dave then, after creating a nonsensical lie that does not convince anyone, decides to skip town in order to avoid the responsibility of taking up for his actions. When taking into consideration the story line and its relativity to the South during the 1920s, when the story is set, it’s clear to see that Dave Saunders’ story is more than what it seems to be on the surface. Then O'Brien goes on to talk of maybe why this young man was in the army, and maybe why he was fighting; these are something’s that are taught in the schools. O'Brien states that the man may have joined because he was struggling for independence, juts like all the people that were fighting with him. Maybe this man had been taught from the beginning that to defend the land was a mans highest duty and privilege. Then on the other hand maybe he was not a good fighter, and maybe in poor health but had been told to fight and could not ask any questions. These reasons are all reasons that are taught in textbooks; they go along with the idea of the draft. Some people go fight because they want to and others go because they are told they have to. How do you tell these people apart in the heat of battle or when they are dead? The way that O'Brien starts to describe the young man as someone who was small and frail, and maybe had plans for a bright future puts sorrow in the readers heart, in that all his plans can not happen for him or maybe the family that is longing for his return. It also shows the regret that maybe going on in the killers’ mind. For O'Brien to be writing on how this young mans life has come to a sudden end and his plans for the future is over is intriguing. In the 1920s, also known as the “golden age” of sports, women and young girls faced obstacles such as rejection, gender discrimination, and stereotypes when showing interest in sports or fitness activities. One famous author named Susan Cahn, wrote a book called Coming on Strong: Gender and Sexuality in Twentieth-Century Women’s Sports, and focuses on the decades between the 1920s and the 1960s. For most of the 19th century, females were accused of causing a great deal of danger to the moral and physical areas of masculinity. Through the research of multiple different aspects, such as media, appearance, and gender roles, Cahn puts together an idea and theme that athleticism is seen as a masculine trait because it was once constructed by society itself; which fortunately for the women, that idea can be changed. In the later centuries, Cahn writes about the progress of woman 's appearance in sports, however then describes the difference in respect, attention throughout media, opportunities and wages between men and women.
