Language is beautiful and wondrous phenomenon. Not only is it a crucial component in everyday communication, but it also accentuates the culture of those that speak it. As a student pursuing a career in speech-language pathology, the aspects of communication, such as language, are the pillars of my future profession and will be deeply embedded into my daily life. There are many reasons I have chosen this path, but my childhood friend, Jasmine, can be accredited with my finishing decision to become a speech-language pathologist. When I was in elementary school, Jasmine was one of my closest friends, but I did not always get to play with her at recess because she frequently had to see an audiologist, or go to speech therapy. Jasmine had a congenital
When the class sang songs about happiness and games her lips barely moved.” Margot ignored the other children, the only time she participated was when an activity mentioned the sun. Margot keeps herself apart from the rest of the class while she talks about experiences with the sun, when that is what the kids want the most. Although Margot’s classmates hurt her because of their jealousy, Margot was also partly to blame for since she keeps mentioning something that her classmates has always wanted.

In Joy in School, Steven Wolk discusses how U.S. schools are now boring, dull places, where children’s creativity dies. Instead of school being a fun, joyful place, where students learn the wonders and mysteries of life, school is now a six to seven hour, Monday through Friday, work day. Wolk talks about how teachers play a major role in children’s lives and how they have a big, lasting impact on students’ mind-sets. In this article, Wolk discusses the importance of joy in the classroom and discusses different teaching strategies/techniques that teachers can use to make school more fun and pleasurable for their students. Summary/Review
Success is extremely coveted in the society, however on the path to success, obstacles will stand in the way. Failure is inevitable and the response of an individual towards these obstacles and the failures in their lives determines whether or not they will have success. Failure gives allowance to learn from mistakes and motivates to do better the next time. The Pursuit of Happyness uses lighting, music and camera angles to give viewers an insight into Chris’ journey through the film demonstrating his resiliency, optimism and loving personality. Filmmaker, Gabriele Muccino, uses the protagonist, Chris’ final triumph to illustrate the significance of failure in achieving success.
Even though Flowers’ treatment method is unusual it shows how well it adapts to people of other cultures who represent multicultural linguistic variations. As we learned in class, Speech-Language Pathologist must be aware of dialects and be informed about multicultural people in the United States. As responsible clinicians, we must differentiate between disorders and dialects. Even though the clients that Flowers treated suffered from communication disorders, she was still able to apply her knowledge about a variety of cultures and dialects and treat them efficiently. Another aspect of Flowers’ speech therapy practice is her intend to focus on a specific goal for her clients. Through the model of decision making that was discussed in class lecture, a good decision maker sets specific goals for their clients. Besides being attentive to her clients’ needs, Flowers also conducted research before beginning her institute by learning about dolphins and their effect on children with disabilities. Research is always an essential skill to do because it gives insight into data present and past that informs clinicians on different therapy methods. Last, but not least, Flowers’ method of treatment is innovative which is a skill that we as clinicians need. I found Flowers’ treatment to be of interest because of the innovate method of using animals and humans. Not only is the treatment changing the lives of her multicultural clients, but she is also providing a safe home for dolphins. These are my thoughts on Flowers’ method of therapy through the use of

In our everyday lives, joy has become synonymous with both happiness and pleasure. We have diminished the meaning of the word by using it in place of the more appropriate terms in order to provide emphasis. C.S. Lewis takes more literal definition of joy, and so assigns it more significance in his mind, separating it from any other emotion. Though he acknowledges that oftentimes happiness and pleasure occur simultaneously with joy, they are not the root cause, nor are they the same emotion. I think the best distinction Lewis makes between happiness and pleasure is when he states “Joy… must have the stab, the pang, the inconsolable longing” (Lewis 72). This look into the root of joy demonstrates that joy is not just happiness, it is more complex and not always a fully positive emotion. There can be sadness and longing behind the joy, but it does not diminish the great properties of joy. Because joy is so great it is often sought, but as Lewis says “it is never a possession, always a desire for something longer ago or further away or still ‘about to be’” (Lewis 78). The fleeting nature of joy only adds to the intrigue, as it often comes at the most unexpected times. Lewis recognizes this, as he titled the book “Surprised by Joy.” Lewis also thinks that one’s definition of joy is constantly changing with our experiences. As he learned more about some subject, one that used to bring him joy to study, he “realizes that this was something quite different from the original Joy.”
