1. Judaism is the pioneer religion from which Christianity and Islam first developed. They date back to Abraham, who realized that there is one, true God. Several centuries later, Moses and the Israelites received the Torah at Mount Sinai. The teachings revealed how God wished to be served and worshiped. Moses’ teachings showed that believing in only one true God is the basic principle of Judaism. Judaism’s central idea is that God is supreme; he is the creator of all things and he is indefinitely the all-powerful being who communicates through prayer. Living truthfully and peaceful is viewed as most important. Jewish ethics stress personal morality in all life situations such as home, work, public, and church. Marriage and the family are particularly meaningful in Judaism, as is education and charity. Although Jews believe it is the one true faith, Jews respect other religions and do not discriminate others with different belief systems. There are about fifteen million Jewish people in the world today. During the Holocaust, six million Jews were killed and since then have not regained their population worldwide. The United States is home to about six million Jews, which has become the largest Jewish population in the world. Even though Israel is the spiritual and cultural home for Judaism, only roughly about five million Jews live there currently. Colorado Springs does not have a very large Jewish community, with only about two hundred member families registered. The first record of any Jew living in Colorado Springs was Louis Ehrich, who came from New York in 1882. The first religious Jewish service was someone’s memorial service in 1895. In 1971, the original Temple Shalom was founded in Colorado Springs and has been conducting itself in accordance with Reform and Conservative Jewish movements since. Due to a lack of culture, resources, and funds, the Jewish community in Colorado Springs has stayed small and has not flourished much.
