WKRZ, known to listeners as 98.5 KRZ, follows a Contemporary Hit Radio - Pop/Dance format. The station plays almost exclusively pop music including hits from the last six months, current hits, and new releases. At night, the music line-up includes more remixes and mash-ups to incorporate a dance format and appeal to its audience. The station is licensed to Freeland, Pennsylvania and serves the Scranton, Wilkes-Barre, and Hazelton areas. The show hosts have developed identities and have become household names within the local area. Jeff and Amanda, Rocky and Lissa, and Fishboy are the host of KRZ’s three unique and primary shows. The hosts do not come off as sources of information, respected journalists, or music connoisseurs, instead they seem like average people. The hosts’ personalities fit into the stations format, as they are candid and create a friendship with the listener. They are someone the listener connects to and would like to hang out with. The music played on KRZ are from trending artists like Justin Bieber, Drake, Rihanna, and Sia. Furthermore, they often play “one-hit- wonders” that are popular in the ratings. For teenagers, this is the channel that plays summer hits, music that will be played at prom, and the newest jam. The station boosts their younger viewership by hosting contests to win tickets to concerts. Currently, they are advertising for their winter concert, “Let It Show.” This is a concert intended to draw in younger viewers as it features Lukas Graham, Shaggy, Jacob Whitesides, and Daya. Typically, these are artists with one or two popular songs, which is why the younger audience is attracted to them.
