The car was un-driveable, and couldn't just be abandoned, to be noted by a passing police cruiser. The licence plate was sure to be checked, the Thunderbird revealed as stolen, and quickly linked to he and Karmen if they were found traipsing along the side of the road, luggage in hand, not long after.
