Kristi House, Inc. was named in honor of a 9-year-old girl who was sexually abused by her mother’s paramour and became impregnated. Case coordinators and mental health services was not in place at the time to address children in the community who has been sexually exploited. Kristi’s story brought awareness to local leaders and they began to advocate for children living with abuse. In 1995, Kristi House Child Advocacy Center opened its doors with outreach services that provide evaluation and treatment for children who are in need of emergency care because they are at high risk of trauma. Cheryl is a single mother of two girls Jasmine (13) and Kylie (11). Recently the Department of Human Services has been involved with the family after Cheryl used corporal punishment to discipline Jasmine as Cheryl describes her behaviour as being out of control. Cheryl works two jobs and is absent three nights a week when she is working on nightshift, in which Jasmine sneaks out and does all kinds of stuff, leaving her sister unattended. There is conflict and a strained relationship between Cheryl and Jasmine, and I have met with Cheryl on a few occasions but not with the two daughters. Susie worries most about her gifted and petulant sister Lindsay. Lindsay is only one year younger but still is not told directly about what's happened to Susie; instead she hears telephone snippets and bits of conversations between her parents and the police. After hearing her father describe Susie's features, she asks her father not to lie to her, so he doesn't; but even answering her question, he can't face the truth of his words. Susie watches Lindsay sitting alone in her bedroom trying to harden herself. As the story unfolds, it is clear that Lindsay carries the hardest burden, because no one will ever be able to look at her and not think about Susie.
