Correlations of Ancient Civilizations With The Hunger Games In this essay, the correlations that exist between The Hunger Games trilogy, and the ancient civilizations of Rome and Greece will be discussed. There are certain aspects like characters, situations and events that take place in the series that are similar to characters, situations and events that are Grecian and Roman. There is a clear distinction between the rich, powerful government and the impoverished, subservient citizens, especially since the government, or the Capitol wants the citizens to know their place. The Capitol wants the citizens to be subservient and it seems the Capitol is using the Games as a way to demonstrate and assert their power and control over the citizens. From this objective, many aspects of the Hunger Games trilogy show a similarity to the …show more content…
She has some similarities to the Greek Goddess Diana (Roman Goddess Artemis). She is a highly skilled, virgin huntress, who avoids intimacy with Gale or Peeta and she has also claimed she will never have children, to maintain her virginity. Diana maintains her virginity by transforming her potential suitors into deer. Diana is also a protector or defender of vulnerable women and girls. Katniss is that way particularly toward her younger sister, Primrose. Cinna, the stylists who creates Katniss Everdeen's image for the Hunger Games has a few similarities to Lucius Cornelius Cinna, who was a supporter of leader Marius and Lepidus against the oppressive ruler Sulla. Cinna helps Katniss in defiance against the rulers of the Capitol. Seneca Crane, the head game creator of the Hunger Games is named for the Roman statesman, Lucius Annaeus Seneca. Seneca was in service to the Emperor Claudius and Nero. Seneca was a playwright which is very similar to what Seneca Crane does for the Capitol which is create games, like writing
Another connection between these two texts is the protagonists being portrayed as underdogs. This is probably why I favoured the protagonists and wanted them to win their games (Hunger games and Hunting game). Both the texts have confident and ruthless villains that believe the victims are their puppets. In the Hunger Games, this is the Capital city and predominantly President Snow. It is The Capital who choose to run The Hunger Games and they believe that the tributes from the lower districts have a very slim chance at winning.
In the novel The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, the main character and protagonist is 16 year old Katniss Everdeen, a strong and selfless young woman who is far more mature than her age suggests. As the main provider for her family after her father died, Katniss had to become responsible and resourceful at a young age, which forced her to participate in rebellious behavior in order to keep her family alive. She is an unselfish and protective character, putting herself in danger in order to keep the ones she loves safe, especially for her little sister Primrose. Even after the pain and hardships she has had to go through not only in the games, but in her life, Katniss maintains her
In the novel “The Hunger Games” Suzanne Collins conveys the qualities of a hero through the main character Katniss Everdeen. The novel is based around a dystopian nation, in which is placed in Panem. Through which a boy and a girl from each district must take part in ‘The Hunger Games’ where they have to fight to the death, until there is one survivor. Katniss subsequently evolves as a significant hero portraying the heroic qualities such as selflessness, identity change and intelligence. Selflessness is shown as she puts others before herself, her identity changes as she has to put up a brave face, and intelligence is displayed as her strategies progress in the games.
Given these symptoms (examples above) and the fact that they have lasted more than year can help us determine the Katniss Everdeen is suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. The criterion from DSM-5 on PTSD has also helped in determining the correct diagnosis for Katniss. The traumatic event that lead Katniss to develop PTSD was that she was forced to survive by killing foes and comrades alike. Too often she was placed in situations that were either to kill or be killed by other tributes. Situations like those escalated the risk of becoming another survivor of PTSD. As previously mentioned, the symptoms have lasted more than a year and therefore, has created significant distress on Katniss's emotional, cognitive, physical, and social
“We had to save you because you're the Mockingjay, Katniss, says Plutarch. While you live, the revolution lives” (Collins). Katniss Everdeen from The Hunger Games is a complex character who epitomizes the archetype of a hero, however, she also shatters the mold by rebelling against the capital and endangering her whole family. She starts out as a hero to her family, especially her sister, and then becomes the symbol of strength to everyone. Katniss sacrifices herself by volunteering to join the Hunger Games in place of her sister, it is a game of survival where a boy and a girl from each district are forced to fight the other members of other districts to the death. By going out of her ordinary world and preparing to join a game where her life could be taken, she fits right into the archetype of a hero. Her bow and arrow, the weapon that only she can wield, will be the only things to help her survive. Despite these heroic qualities, Katniss makes an erroneous decision and blunder mistakes that shows the reader the flip side of Katniss.
The names of the characters plays a large role in my list of connections. As a matter of I fact, I found that roughly half the characters in the play Julius Caesar are in the hunger games. Those names being Cato, Cinna, Octavius, Flavius, Portia, Caesar, and Brutus. After some research found that this was indeed intentional. Cinna who is closely tied to Julius Caeser. One was a politician involved in the assassination plot against Julius Caesar the other was a poet who was murdered following the assassination of Caesar having been mistaken by the other Cinna. So what might be said about Cinna the stylist? He’s certainly an artist like the poet. Does his name indicate that he might also be a rebel, plotting against the oppressive Panem? Julius Caesar is in the hunger games just not as Julius Caesar, but instead as Caesar Flickerman. Caesar Flickerman is not the main character in the story the hunger games, but instead represents the game being the show
Human interaction, culture and the ways of living within a society can be altered in order for the rehabilitation of humanity to proceed. The Hunger Games is based on what was once North America now called Panem, a nation separated into twelve districts, each functioning individually but all connected and dictated by President Snow. The division between districts within the capitals jurisdiction causes chaos which is created by the hierarchy of power, creating an unstable city and leaving the rich to profit off the poor through oppression. Human behavior and humanity are displayed throughout The Hunger Games but it is predominantly shown between the function and the structure of the actual games, the districts, their cultures, the main character, how she is a feminist in a post-apocalyptic world. The Hunger Games is a complex study of Anthropology.
The Hunger Games makes relates many of the characters to historical figures. Many of the male figures seem to be named after Roman politicians, philosophers, and poets. Take Cinna, for instance. Cinna, in the novel, is Katniss’ and Peeta’s stylists for the Games. He does their makeup and creates their outfits to wear for the opening ceremony, for the interview with Caesar Flickerman, and for in the arena. His artistic skills relate to that of Gaius Helvius Cinna, a Roman poet. He also resembles to Lucius Cornelius Cinna, although more so later in the sequel, Catching Fire, because they are both defiant. Cinna, for turning the wedding dress President Snow wanted Katniss to dress in for her interview with Caesar Flickerman into a mockingjay, which turned into a symbol of rebellion, and Lucius Cornelius Cinna for staging a rebellion. What really ties it all together is that Cinna, Lucius Cornelius Cinna, and Gaius Helvius Cinna all met their demise by murder.
The young-adult novel of Suzanne Collins’ The Hunger Games is an epic story that represents the hero’s journey of Katniss Everdeen, an ambitious teenager who fights for survival against the oppressive government. The hero’s journey is the story of an epic hero’s adventure as he or she meets and overcomes multiple challenges and obstacles through each of the twelve stages. Homer’s epic poem, The Odyssey, is a well-known example that portrays the hero’s journey. The Hunger Games is a modern work, popular among teenagers, that follow up to the steps of the hero’s journey.
In the novel, The Hunger Games, written by Suzanne Collins, the reasons for Katniss and Peeta's winning the Game was all thanks to the help of their team. Their team has helped them, Katniss and Peeta, by training them at their sessions, helping them get their sponsors, and keeping them alive while being in the Game.
The title “Hunger Games” evokes a clear message: the way people living in the districts see this terrifying event as something fun, calling it a “game”. The whole event is shown on screens in all the different districts and people gather and enjoy watching their tributes. This clearly relates to a televised sporting event in which participants compete to win. The enthusiasm of the population is seen especially during the opening ceremony with “the pounding music, the cheers “. Moreover, the Games recall the gladiatorial Games of Ancient Rome in which armed competitors, some voluntary and others not, would fight to death. The fact that the games are televised and discussed in Panem’ s media also recalls today’s reality television, and the novel consequently draws a parallel between the gladiatorial Games and reality TV.
Ancient Roman History, Current through the Hunger Games The Hunger Games a thrilling, adventurous story isn’t it? But how did the story come to be? Did the story just come to Suzanne Collins like that? The captivating trilogy was actually inspired by the ancient Rome and its concept of “bread and circuses.”
Modern day women owe their strides in feminism to Artemis, the original feminist from Ancient Greek mythology. Throughout time, feminism has taken on different forms and has evolved somewhat. To many, males and females alike, feminism is just women wanting attention, when in reality, it is more complex and involves so much more than just the need to be in the spotlight. “The Woman’s Bible is an example of a work of criticism firmly in this school, looking beyond the more obvious male-centered outlook and interpretation” (Napikoski Web). Artemis, goddess of the hunt and youth, and Katniss Everdeen, the hero from the film The Hunger Games (2012), are connected by a feminist independence and a desire to protect that proves feminism is an ancient concept.

In many works of literature, it is often a crucial component for characters to sacrifice opportunities that arise in their lives in order to help loved ones. In Suzanne Collin’s “The Hunger Games,” protagonist Katniss Everdeen sacrifices the chance to live her own life in order for her sister, Primrose Everdeen, to not experience potential death in the arena. Another character that has similar attributes to Katniss Everdeen would be Pari II in Khaled Hosseini’s, “And the Mountains Echoed.” This novel depicts a strong relationship between parents and a daughter that results in missed opportunities due to the health risks that have developed in the parents. The fundamental values of such a character have developed through years of witnessing
