In a dystopian society, there is always a leader of the pack. Suzanne Collins’ popular novel, The Hunger Games, is based on a 16-year-old teenager who is the ultimate friend and family member. In this novel, Katniss Everdeen volunteers as tribute to compete in The Hunger Games. Over the course of the novel, Katniss goes through challenges socially, physically, and mentally. Katniss’ loving, brave and caring personality proves that she is a great friend and family member. In this novel, Katniss is loving. Just before this year’s annual reaping, when Prim is scared she is going to be chosen to compete in this year’s Games, Katniss says “They’re not gonna pick you, Prim.”(Collins 19) Katniss refuses to let Prim worry and comforts her. Her dedication to her sister demonstrates how much she loves her. It is found later in the novel when Rue was dying in the woods on the hands of Katniss. “Deep in the meadow, hidden far away a cloak of leaves, a moonbeam ray forget your woes and let your troubles lay and when it’s morning again, they’ll wash away here it’s safe, here it’s warm here the daisies guard you from every harm here your dreams are sweet and tomorrow brings them true here is the place where I love you.” Although Katniss is completing against Rue, she is willing to care for others no matter what situation she faces. When Katniss is with Peeta in the woods she says, “Katniss feeds Peeta, constructs shelter with rocks from the cave for them two, and then settles down to keep watch for the night.” Despite the risks of helping Peeta, she takes the time to help he is wounded and ill.
