“They would beat you. They would make you feel like they would cause you yourself or your family harm. Another thing, some of the girls don’t have anywhere to go (Victims, 2011).” Keisha Head works as an anti-human trafficking advocate, but that was not always the case. She was once a victim to this cold and unforgiving way of life that many people simply call “prostitution.” It has been said by the ignorant that prostitutes must enjoy their line of work, as sex is generally considered pleasurable. They lay in wait for their intended target to get isolated from its herd, and then they take it down. In the human sex trafficking trade, pimps are much like the lion, targeting human prey. They look for the weak of our society and exploit them. Who composes this prey? For these purposes, there are generally two areas that pimps exploit in their victims: the first is the hope of an opportunity and the second is a desire to be loved. (Federal Bureau of Investigation, 2016). Some of these opportunities appear as though they offer a solution to financial hardships or dreams that seem hard to reach and include the visage of a job, a brighter future, or a home. This is presented in such a way that it appears to be a legitimate job. They also target those who do not feel loved by drawing them into their charade by masquerading as an emotional lover who can provide a sense of belonging and desire. These pimps prey on the hopes and dreams of society’s weak and convince them that their bodies are the price of achieving their desires. This type of high-scale prostitution is slavery in its own right, with the young adults essentially victims of their situation. One account reported by ABC News shares that a young sugar baby is engaging in sex with her sugar daddy in order to pay for her college (Monte & Tommy, 2014). While it is considered advantageous by both parties, it is no different than the corner prostitution prominent across the nation- the victim needs a source of income and there is an individual willing to provide just that at quite the cost.
