AThe Keys to a Great Novel A great novel needs to be truly captivating on all levels of the story, as well as, holding a great controversy among the readers. Great novels do not allow the readers to be uninspired to read, but they do not have all of the pieces laid out in front of the reader’s eyes. The controversy consists between the readers because of the differing opinions of the human beings who read the novels. Great novels are created on the basis of how an author develops the characters, what they use to move the plot along, as smoothly as possible, and how the setting allows the reader to imagine that they are inside of the story itself. With the proper usage, the reader can visualize themselves inside of the book and experience what is happening. For example, when reading IT by Stephen King, I was a part of the story. I was able to see the streets of Derry, and the monsters that the children encountered during the story. Furthermore, thanks to Mr. King’s development of characters and setting, I imagined myself as one of the main characters. It was captivating to read a novel with that amount of detail and imagery. When all three aspects are combined, a great novel is born. The characters, the plot, and the settings set the scene for the readers by placing a bundle of surprises in the reader’s hands. According to Stephen King, “You see something, then it clicks with something else, and it will make a story. But you never know when it's going to happen.” In this quote, he is telling the readers that when the pieces fall together a story will be created; however, it is never guaranteed when this accomplishment will come.
