Khnum Khufu: The Second Pharaoh Of Ancient Egypt

Major Accomplishments: He helped established the pharaoh as a central authority and the Great Pyramid of Giza. The Great Pyramid of Giza took 20 years to build, it was made with more than 2 million stone blocks, and the king’s chamber had six different roofs.Building the Great Pyramid was an amazing feat. No one knows exactly how the Egyptians did it.Khufu had strict control of the building project. He organized and fed thousands of workers. The finished pyramid was a stunning monument to the Egyptians. Also he declared himself as a god.

Egypt is one of the world’s oldest civilization that dates back thousands of years. Located in the northeastern part of Africa, Egypt was the central hub for the old civilization. During that time, it had two different confederations, Upper and Lower Egypt. In order to unify these two areas the Pharaohs or “god-kings” formed a government system. (Egyptians Cultural Orientation 2012). This allowed the Pharaohs to start their reign as rulers. Under their rule, many inventions and ideas were accomplished. The most noticeable advance technology during that era were the pyramids. Thousands of slaves built them as testaments to the eternal greatness of the “god-kings”.

Amenhotep IV was considered an "unusual ruler in the history of ancient Egypt". He reigned for 17 years, from c.1353 - 1336 BCE. He had changed his name around 1348 BCE to Akhenaten ("One Who Is Effective on Behalf of the Aten"). He would be considered a radical in our times, and had radically changed many aspects of the culture, some of which involved; the political, spiritual, and cultural life of the country. During this transforming time, there were radical changes in royal artisitic conventions, introducing the New Amarna Style.

In the 19th dynasty, Ramses II was crowned as the third pharaoh of Ancient Egypt. He was powerful, intelligent and made numerous major achievements as a pharaoh. Ramses II lived in a massive family consisting of 48 to 50 sons, 48 to 53 daughters and 8 wives. This made them one of the largest families in Egypt. Seti I, also known as Ramses II father was said to be the second Pharaoh of Ancient Egypt in the 19th dynasty. Just like his son, he was a great leader that reigned over Egypt for around 2 years. Ramses II ruled Ancient Egypt for around 66 years and 2 months. This made him the second longest pharaoh that reigned Egypt. Ramses II body was discovered in 1813 nearby red sea at a place called Jabalai in a tomb around many of his monuments. The age of Ramses II corpse was approximately 3000 years old. Around his body was hundreds of jewelleries, names of his sons and hieroglyphs carved on walls, pottery and mummified remains.

Giza:The pharaoh Khufu ruled Egypt from 2551 to 2528 B.C.E. Khufu was a harsh king. Khufu built the great pyramid. The way that the pyramid was built was the entrance of the pyramid lead to a corridor that moves downward to the very first unfinished burial chamber. The second unfinished chamber was the queen's chamber. The last chamber is called the the grand gallery. This chamber is sometimes called the king's chamber. We still don’t know how the great pyramid was built ,but scholars have made different suggestions about it.

Khufu was an Egyptian Pharaoh in the fourth dynasty. It is estimated that he became Pharaoh in his twenties and that he ruled from 2589 B.C to 2566 B.C. Khufu wasted no time in beginning the construction of his pyramid as soon as he came to power. There is not much known about this Pharaoh other than his famous construction of the Great Pyramid of Giza for which he is widely acknowledged for. (www.bbc.co)

The son of Khufu, Khafre, built his pyramid around 2576 BC. The Pyramid of Khafre is smaller than his fathers, 446 feet tall; however, it was built on higher ground so therefore it looks larger. He also tried to outdo his father by creating The Great Sphinx that sits guard over the pyramids. He had two entrances into the pyramid which led to the burial chambers. There is an outer casing that still remains, which would have covered all three of The Pyramids of Giza; however, the rest of the limestone was stripped by robbers. The third and smallest, 215 feet high, of the three pyramids was built for Pharaoh Menkaure, the eldest of Khafre’s sons. At the time of the Old Kingdom, Egyptians would build pyramids as part of their civilization. These pyramids were structures used by the ancient world for religious purposes, were tombs for the mummified bodies of pharaohs, and a symbol of royal power (“The Pyramids of Egypt” and Spielvogel 23). Therefore, they were not built in isolation but as part of a larger complex dedicated to the dead (Spielvogel 22). With that being said, over 130 pyramids have been discovered in Egypt (“Ancient Egyptian Pyramid Facts for Kids – Giza, Djoser, Saqqara, Tutankhamun”). With one of them being the largest, oldest and most magnificent, the Great Pyramid, built under Snefru’s son Khufu (Spielvogel 22).

Khufu was the son of Snefru and second ruler of the 4th dynasty, Khufu was a good architecture, helped build multiple pyramids. Architecture is planning, and brainstorming the construction of a building. Khufu himself, Imhotep, and Heminu were all architectures for the historic pyramid Khufu. According to the ancient Greek historian Herodotus, Khufu enslaved many of his men to work on the ancient pyramid. The pyramid is the largest ever made. It contains enough space to store 2.3 million stone blocks, each weighing from 2.5 to 15 tons each. The pyramid has three burial chambers. They all represent different things.

The Great Pyramid of Giza is also recognized as the Pyramid of Khufu, Khufu's Pyramid and Pyramid of Cheops. It is the most significant and earliest structure in the world. This pyramid is the oldest of the three pyramids standing on the Giza Necropolis. It is also the largest of them all (Larry, 2000). This great pyramid is located on the northern edge of the Giza Plateau, which is 25 km outskirts, southwest of Cairo, Egypt. It is the only remaining standing monument of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World (Crystalink, 2011). It is said that the pyramid was built as the tomb for the Fourth Dynasty Egyptian King Khufu (known in Greek as Cheops).

The builder of the Great Pyramid does not get enough credit for his unbelievable achievement. Khufu (Also known as Cheops) was pharaoh for 24 years, 20 of which were occupied by the construction of the pyramid. The Greeks of the period called him Cheops but his original Egyptian name was Khufu.
