Nothing is more terrifying to most parents than the idea of their child being harmed. In August of 2007 a black based radio station named Choice FM in the UK plays on this fear with the use of a television ad focusing on public interest calling for gun control with the slogan “Stop the bullets. Kill the gun”. Imagine a scene opening with an egg on a stand in front of a solid blue background resembling water and intense opera music playing in the background. A bullet cuts through it instantly, and the egg is replaced with a glass of milk that is almost instantly impaled by another bullet. The cycle continues with the next few items including an apple, a bottle of ketchup, a bottle of water on its side, and then a watermelon. Suddenly, a young …show more content…
The egg for example resembles the shape of the boy’s own head and is very fragile with gelantine-like contents being expelled upon impact. The bottle of water and watermelon serve a vital purpose in appealing through logos with the sheer precision of the trajectory being shown as the bullet cuts through the water and how effortlessly the bullets tears through a thick watermelon. Watching these bullets eradicate the items on screen gives the audience an idea of how powerful guns truly are. With the combination of item choice, the slowing down of the bullets to show the audience just how relentlessly the bullet causes damage is a real life example of why guns are to be associated with true harm they …show more content…
Many black individuals feel persecuted by ad stating that there was no need for only a black boy to be a target when they had multiple objects therefore feeling as if that gives ground for having multiple children of different backgrounds. Others went as far as saying that the use of the watermelon being shown before the boy’s head alludes to racist undertones oblivious to the fact that the ad was created by a black based radio station. This uproar given by the audience makes it evident that ad did not persuade or add support to their cause. On the other hand, outside of the target audience, you have Caucasian members of UK population stating that this ad is portraying a black boy due to the fact that gun violence is a minority problem or even as going far as saying that the target audience is playing the “race card”. The ad did not have members of the intended audience responding to the forum calling for action on gun violence/regulation. There are many individuals outside of the intended audience supporting and praising the ad, others stating that they are disappointed in the fact that the bullet didn’t slice through the boy’s head. On the other hand, there are African-Americans who do feel like the black community as a target audience and the representation of that was executed perfectly and that the ad was
Woods’ novel raises questions about the effects gun violence has on communities, which leads into how it can have negative mental effects on children, and how more laws should be passed for the expansion of
In the column “Guns do kill People,” Phillip Caputo draws the attention of people who disagree in gun shootings by trying to make them understand that guns are to blame for all of the deaths related to shootings. In order to rebute, her states that libertarians and gun-rights lobbyists state that, “guns don’t kill people, people kill people.” In the beginning, Caputo wants to support his argument on how guns are the problem, but he then switches the topic of his discussion to how people are the problem. He gives reasons and explanations for both sides of the topic so that he seems more reliable and makes more people understand and agree with him. Caputo compares how one would react to an animal in danger and a child in danger. He claims that,
The article was originally published in 2013, a year after the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, which was a mass shooting that killed 20 children and six adults. This tragedy leads to high concerns about what can possibly be done to prevent this from happening again. Although gun control debates have been occurring for centuries, in recent debates they have become even more heated due to the many incidents of gun violence. In Simon’s article, she brought more tension and views to help delegate what needs to be done to stop the violence in the country rather than leave it

“Interview the survivors of mass shootings and you hear these phrases a lot: Gunfire, they explain, rarely sounds like what it is… Many who have lived through the terror recall thinking it was a joke. A drill. Anything except the awful truth: that they might have only a few seconds to live” (“Stop the Violence” -Brody 220). Some people say guns make us feel safer, but in reality, they cause more harm than good. Arthur Kellermann and his colleagues concluded that, “Sadly, buying a gun does not make you safer. To the contrary, the evidence suggests that bringing a gun into your home increases the chances you will be killed” (“Feeling safe” -Vyse 27). Gun violence poses a very big threat to the U.S. “The U.S. has many more guns--and gun deaths--than any other developed country. In 2014, there were more than 33,000 such deaths in this country” (“Fight Over” 12). Guns are extremely dangerous and many deaths occur due to them, including murder, suicide, and accidental deaths, so stricter gun laws and technology should be used to decrease the number of gun deaths in the U.S.
Guns have been is society for centuries. They have been used for hunting, war, and even safety. However, in the past several years they have begun to take the lives of many innocent victims, often young children. In response to the killings in Newtown, Conn., it has been noted, “If this were a country, the number of children killed by gun violence would violate international law.” (Browne-Marshall) F.B.I. data shows in 2011, 1,668 African American children were killed due to guns. Day by day gun violence is rising and it is not only in ghetto neighborhoods.

Over the past 10 years the privilege of the right to bare arms, has spun out of control. On the daily, 48 children and teens are shot in murders, assaults, suicides and suicide attempts, unintentional shootings, and police intervention. On average, 297 people in the US
Malcolm X once said, “Sometimes you have to pick the gun up to put the gun down” (Malcolm X: "The Ballot). However, the news rarely accounts for when a gun has saved someone from potential danger. Every day, gun murders are broadcasted and dramatized on the news. Reports put emphasis on the guns, effectively making firearms look accountable for these evil acts. Indeed, devastation and destruction are what catch the public’s attention and get news channels high ratings. These broadcasts consequently convince the general population that controlling and even banning guns is going to stop the existence of violence. The United States does have the highest gun ownership rate in the world by a significant amount. On the contrary, the United States
Gun control has become a topic of controversy in the United States. There are those who oppose Gun Control and those who approve, those who proclaim that guns are the ones executing human beings and animals as well. In the preceding article, “How Gun Control Kills”, the author Jack Hunter claims, “Is there an evil worse than killing children? Is there anything more heart-wrenching than the feeling of absolute helplessness in our inability to protect them?” The author of the article is speaking against Gun control, stating why the country does not need laws against owning weapons and claiming Gun control is responsible for the killings the U.S is currently encountering. In the following article, “It’s Time to Ban Guns. Yes, All of them.” the
In his book The Bias Against Guns, John Lott seeks to explain why guns make it easier for people to protect themselves and prevent criminal acts. This book breaks down what is being talked about in media and why almost everything people hear about gun control is wrong. This book will be extremely helpful in explaining the ‘good’ and the ‘bad’ about guns, what ‘to do’ and what ‘not to do’ with guns, how the government works against gun ownership, and victim shootings with hand guns. Lott discusses both sides of gun control and goes into detail about real incidents where people have died from using guns improperly and where people have died using guns correctly. This book was written to inspire people with a new view of gun control and gun safety.
It is impossible not to open a newspaper, watch the television, or listen to the radio with out hearing about some type of gun violence. Perhaps the main reason for such high gun violence is that guns are so plentiful in the Unites States. In fact, there are sixty five million handguns in America ("The `facts' about Guns"). These guns contribute to an annual medical cost of fourteen billion dollars, which is spent solely on treating gun victims ("Handguns in America"). Not surprisingly, handguns are the cause of eighty percent of homicides, seventy percent of suicides, and almost every accidental shooting ("Youth and Violence"). Handgun violence is a problem that is easy for everyone to see. How to solve this predicament is another
The small print at the bottom of the image both engages pathos and logos in the audience, as it reads ‘We won't sell Kinder chocolate eggs in the interest of child safety. Why not assault weapons?’ This simple, logical explanation of the advert persuades the mass audience to stop and think about the laws governing gun use in the United
Many people are injured and even killed everyday because of the misuse of firearms. Over the past few years the number of injuries and deaths have increased rapidly due to the large number of guns on the streets. 64% of households confess that they are threatened by a gun which could possibly take their life (“Smart Gun Laws”). The percent of children killing their parents with a firearm has increased 3.3% over a 28 year period (“Smart Gun Laws”). By having a gun in the a household with children, the odds of
For many years, people have been pushing the American government to implement new laws that deal with gun control. Supporters of the argument claim that increased gun control will drastically reduce the crime rate in America. Nevertheless, a majority of gun control arguments are formed from strict control of data and emotional appeal. The mainstream media picks up these stories and broadcasts them to viewers without providing any context to them. While gun control activists assert that gun control is necessary, the American government should not ban guns because of the following reasons: potential vulnerability of innocent people being shot at by criminals and the inability for people to defend themselves against their own government.
