Throughout Terrence Malick’s 1973 film, Badland’s, Kit is constantly making all the decisions for Holly asserting his dominance over her. Right from the start Kit forces Holly to take walks with him, go for rides in his car, and then he takes total control over her after he kills her father. Forcing her on a long journey of running from criminal justice and sporadically killing people, Holly finds herself stuck with a mentally insane criminal. When Holly finally stands up for herself after being controlled by kit for a long time they go their separate ways and Kits criminal journey comes to an end shortly after. Kit comes to Holly’s house when they are not home and lets himself in. He starts packing her clothes in her room so when she gets home her clothes are all packed for her to leave with him. Kit also brings a gun with him because he is prepared for Holly to leave with him when she gets home whether she wants to or not. When he’s packing her clothes in her room it is dimly lit which represents his true, controlling, personality for the first time. When Holly and her Dad arrive home Kit points his gun at Holly’s dad because he threatened to call the police and when he took one step to far Kit shoots him. Kit then tells Holly that they are running away and gives her no other options except to leave with him and she agrees. Right before they burn down the house they are sitting in the living room talking and Kits face was completely in the dark while Hollys face is lit by the light from the lamp. This could represent that Kit is controlling and dangerous and Hollys innocence because she hasn’t done anything. After Kit kills Hollys dad he takes control of her which ultimately leads to their
