Kong Qui, better known as the Latinization of his name, Confucius, is thought to have been born around 551 B.C. in China. Confucius is China’s most famous philosopher, writer and political theorist and is responsible for philosophy of Confucianism which reflects many social and political ideas of ancient China and is more often characterized as a system of ethical and social philosophy as opposed to a religion, although it was built on a religious foundation (Center for Global Education). We mostly know of Confucius from texted that date back to the period of 403-221 BCE, which is known as the “Warring States Period”. This was a time when China suffered from the internecine warfare of small states and had no political unity. The once great Zhou Dynasty had collapsed after the barbarian invasions of 771 BCE and this was a time of unrest and uncertainty (Richey).
Not much is known about the life of Confucius, which is noteworthy since his ideas and teachings had such a large influence on East Asian social and intellectual history. He was self-educated and sought out a career as not only a teacher, but as a social reformer, as well. The foundation for the culture and education in China was provided by Confucius, which is why he is known as China’s leading and most notable thinker in the fifth century B.C.E. He delivered the proper conduct, proper behavior and fundamental rules of how to live one’s life in a decent manner (Fiero, 2015).
