Ladies Grab Five All-Conference Selections, Miller Named First Team SAN ANTONIO, Texas – And the historic 2016 Ladies softball season continues. Just hours after capturing its first Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament win in program history, five Centenary softball players were honored by the conference. In a vote by the SCAC coaches and announced at the Conference Softball Tournament Friday, April 22, five Ladies grabbed All-Conference honors. Headlining the All-Conference winner was sophomore Haley Miller, who took First Team All-Conference Utility accolades. Freshman Wendy Gillet appeared on the Second Team as a First Baseman, while classmate Nichole Aldridge (pitcher), sophomore Michelle Tasin (second base) and senior Emily Sexton (outfielder) were named Honorable Mention. With her First Team honors, Miller became the first Lady to receive this accolade in three years. …show more content…
She led the team with a .450 batting average, including a hit in all six of the first Centenary games of 2016. Aldridge also grabbed Honorable Mention All-Conference honors, leading the team with a 10-13 record in the circle. Aldridge, who started 20 games and appeared in 28 in the circle, holds a 3.09 ERA with a save in 129 innings pitched. She went 3-1 in her first week of collegiate action to be named SCAC Pitcher of the Week on February 15. Joining Aldridge on the Honorable Mention All-Conference list is Sexton and Tasin, who both made All-Conference last season. Sexton ranks third in the SCAC in stolen bases (25) and fourth in runs scored (38). Tasin finished third in the conference in hits (54) and fifth in the conference with a .412 batting average, including beginning the season with a 16-game hitting streak. Layton came to John Jay after spending successful seasons coaching D1 Marist College in Poughkeepsie, N.Y and DII The University of Rhode Island . Layton led the Red Foxes (Marist College) to the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference championship game. In her two years at Marist, her teams earned back-to-back trips to the league championship tournament. With this mentality she brings jokes and tears of laughter to each practice and games. A four-year letterwinner during her playing career at the Connecticut, Layton earned first-team All-Big East accolades as a junior and senior and was a member of two Big East Championship teams. Layton compiled a .297 career average as a catcher and ranks among UConn's Top 10 in five career categories Layton played professionally for the New Jersey Diamonds of the Ladies Professional Baseball League. After another weekend where the Gents swept an SCAC opponent, Centenary rose in all three polls. In game one, sophomore Cameron Guin led the Gents with three hits in as many at-bats with three RBI’s and three runs scored. He added a home run to right field in the fifth for his second round-tripper of his collegiate career.
Leading the SCAC and ranking second in the nation in wins, sophomore Kaleb Kirk (9-4) received First Team All-Conference Starting Pitcher honors. Junior outfielder Michael Schimpf, who ranks third in the conference with a .417 batting average, joins Kirk on the First Team list.
The Congressional Women’s Softball League does not play against each other; rather they play against the women in the media. Keith plays the catcher for the rival team, Bad News Babes. This team is entirely of women from the press corps.
Jeremey Soehnlin received the Defensive Player of the year from the Belleville West Football Coaches. Soehnlin has been apart of the athletic department of Belleville West since his freshman year, and now, in his senior year, his team spirit and skill are being recognized.
Last spring in his third season, Kurtis Kloke and Spencer Backstrom each earned Second Team all-Northwest Conference honors. Backstrom was also selected Third Team all-Region by the American Baseball Coaches Association. He posted 85 strikeouts in 60 innings of work with 14 appearances to his credit. He finished the season with a 4-2 mark, four saves and a 1.95 ERA en route to second team all-Northwest Conference honors. Kloke had 12 multi-hit games with a team-leading 40 hits and a share of the team lead with 26 RBIs.

Gabrielle Swinson recorded a career-high 19 points to lead the Spartans (14-14, 9-7 MEAC) in their final regular season game. Making her first start since Nov. 30 at High Point, Swinson led the team in points, rebounds, assists and steals. She dropped seven dimes and grabbed six rebounds to match career high’s in both categories and registered a game-high five steals as well. Rae Corbo was the last time a Norfolk State player to lead the team in all four categories, when she accomplished the feat on Nov. 23,
However, Zapata only ranked second on the team with a .395 average because of teammate Michael Schimpf. Schimpf became only the second player in SCAC history to lead the conference in batting average in consecutive season. Besides being named All-American by d3Baseball.com, Schimpf excelled in the classroom as well. In May 2017, he became the first player to be named First Team Academic AllAmerican by the Collegiate Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). It is also believed he became the first athlete in Centenary’s history to win the prestigious NCAA Post Graduate Scholarship Award.
