America’s student are Lagging In a country where it is rich full of ‘opportunities’ but yet still falls short compared to other countries in the education system. The education system in the United States falls short when it is compared to developed and developing countries because it is the first thing that gets a budget cut when there is a financial crisis. Why would you cut the budget from something that betters our future and the future of our young ones? The answer is simply because there are more prisons then schools. The opening sentence of his famous work The Communist Manifesto, reads “The history of the hitherto existing society is the history of the class struggles,” Marx saying this meaning that every stage in history, there will be a war between the classes and one class will dominate the other. For example an upper class student will have more resources to utilize then a working class student when it comes to doing school work. The upper class student will likely be going to a private school where it will have unlimited supplies compared to a working class where it is limited. But are the results academically different? Yes in the article Americas Are Lagging Behind, said that “American students from families with the least educational resources, as it turned out, scored better on the PISA math test than similar children in France and about the same as Britons, Germans and Irish.” This is because the working class student has more motive, so one day it could change its family situation, so it will work ten times harder than the upper class student where for it everything is on a silver platter. Emile Durkheim French sociologist, social psychologist and philosopher would say that it is society as one that is responsible for America’s student lagging behind. Where a working class student is lagging behind it is expected to drop out and get a day time job so it can provide oneself so it can fit in society. This is the individual shared consciousness with society, it is what makes them members of society. Just as Durkheim put it “two consciousness’s exist within us: the one comprises only states that are personal to each one of us, characteristic of us as individuals,” (Durkheim 61) representing that individual alone in what is so unique and what makes that individual that individual.
