The effect of Lars Eighner’s attention to language is that it catches the audience’s attention. His purpose is to inform the reader about his profession as a dumpster diver. Since he realizes the misconceptions his profession holds, he introduces it on a lighter, technical note. As a result, instead of disgusting the audience, he engrosses them. By saying unconventional statements like “I have never heard these things called anything but Dumpsters”(87), he slowly lures the audience’s attention. The effect of Lars Eighner’s attention to language in the first paragraphs was an appeal to ethos. He was not some average wino or hobo, but established himself to be a well-informed and intelligent author. His meticulousness and sophisticated curiosity
Lars Eighner wrote the passage, Dumpster Diving. The essay describes his life as a dumpster diver. Eighner used rhetorical strategies to introduce his subject and description of these examples will be stated below. Throughout the essay he uses various rhetorical strategies to convey his subject, such as ethos, pathos, and logos.
In the book excerpt by Firoozeh Dumas, “The F-Word”, Dumas uses several techniques to hook her readers and keep their interest in her piece. It was her style, however, that did most of the work. Dumas' article has a very strong single argument that she works toward throughout her entire piece. She claims that the English language could do with a bit more “spice”, as she calls it (Dumas). Though this argument is only listed only twice in the excerpt, it is the underlying foundation of every humorous story as well as every painful moment. Throughout the excerpt, Dumas has paired together the use of her style with how she builds ethos in the reader's eyes. This creates a very good way to convey the argument, however it still lacks certain strengths. Had she written in a slightly more formal tone and included more evidence, she could have kept her humor and continued to build on her ethos by appealing to a more professional group. The use of an easy going conversational style in Dumas' excerpt helps to portray her claim in a way that most readers will be able to identify with, however, the style does not work well in appealing to a professional setting due to the lack of empirical evidence.
Robert lipsyte”s “jock’s culture” showcase the tactful writing style of the writer. In this essay he’s trying to convince his readers that there are 2 types of men in the world Jocks and Pukes. In this excerpt the author is using contrast, compare, sarcasm, metaphor and exemplification and personal reminiscence or experience to convince his audience with a heavy essay
Eighner himself has lived on the streets as a homeless man. He allows the reader to join him in his own personal life stories in order to show the severity of his past situation. Eighner tells of the embarrassment and shame that comes from scavenging through trash to stay alive. He writes of the woeful feelings that a homeless person possesses in their time of wander. “He can wipe the egg yolk off the found can, but he cannot erase the stigma of eating garbage out of his mind” (Eighner 144). With much passion, he speaks of the homeless as victims of a undeserved life. However, according to Linderman, the life of a dumpster diver can be quite satisfying.
Twenge uses three different type of genres and several rhetorical devices across all of her articles. In her article “Generation Me on Trial” the genre Twenge use is newspaper genre. She also use rhetorical devices such as logos and pathos in this article. She also uses logos in her article “Personality Processes and Individual Differences.” The genre for that article is scholarly research journal. In her final essay “Introduction” Twenge use ethos to appeal to her audience which is in the textbook genre. All three of Twenge’s articles using different genres is good for her to spread her message. In all of her essays she discuss the same topic, “Generation Me.” By her pursuing a different genre each time she is able to spread her message more
From the beginning of the article, the tone was inviting, and the style of writing was different than previous journal responses we have had to do. She wrote in a more relatable way that made you feel as if you were sharing a conversation. Rieder’s thesis stated that while she is enjoying her time at the beautiful campus with friends, she sometimes feels unworthy and out of place compared to most other students. She feels self-doubt because this experience is far different from anything else she has done before. Not only does she feel that her old school was different from UVA, but that her studies at the Virginia campus are different from a great majority of students there, most of whom are taking STEM
Speaking is tough for some people who have had a rough past and do not want to deal with anyone. In the novel Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson, Melinda goes from being caught in a snare to feeling freedom. At the start of the story, she is extremely afraid and anxious because of what happened at the senior party at the end of summer. Melinda is scared because she has no one to be with on her first day of high school. Everyone blames her for what happened at the party. Nobody knows that she was raped which makes everything more challenging. In the end, she is able to defend herself against the person who raped her, Andy Evans. At first, Melinda feels like an outsider because of the incident that happened at the party in August which caused
The author used a question and answer format throughout the text because this will increase and attracted the audience. Not only that this can also help the reader since they going to have that question in their mind but no one is going to answer the question at the time the reader have. Like this quote in the article “ Who is Ed O’Bannon and why is he suing the N.C.A.A?” This is one of the question that pop in my head who is O’Bannon? but since the author already ask that and answer the question in the next line. Now i dont have to be curios anymore.
John Van Den Anker Thoughts and Memories “Here is a drawing of a Stapler” (xlv). In A Heartbreaking Work of a Staggering Genius, Eggers fabricates an unique narrative of intertwined thought and dialogue. The presence of the stapler drawing at the end of the acknowledgements has a bifold meaning: it serves as a representation of both his and the reader’s relationships with the text. Eggers weaves together a narrative that includes his genuine thoughts that oppose the “almost entirely reconstructed dialogue”(x). His focus on the memory and reflection on the past dominate his factual retrospective perception which he subtly conveys in the acknowledgements through graphs and a guide of symbols.
However, the end of the article lacks the same level of effectiveness in the appeals to ethos. For example, Martin notes that when blank do blank, they are considered to be “oppositional” to authority. The usage of the word Blank is jarring to the reader; unprofessional and immature, it is a shift from the researched, intelligent voice she has established and the reader is less likely to take the authority seriously. This damages the strength of his credibility and his argument.

Rather than simply “telling”, the poem moves from observation to illumination, and the fish’s pain is “revealed” through the content and literary devices of the poem. By personifying the title fish and giving it human-like qualities, Bishop objectifies and allows its pain to be more clearly communicated. As Scarry theorizes, “If the referent for these now objectified attributes is understood to be the human body, the the sentient fact of the person’s suffering will become knowable to a second person” (Scarry 13). While Bishop’s personification does not explicitly present the fish as a human body, the implicit similarities underscored by the juxtaposition between the fish and the speaker allows the fish to transform from an alien “other” into a familiar one imbued with human qualities such as aging, perseverance and defeat.
So punctuation, cuisine, and the subjective case are all demonstrably less than objective, except for you and it, which are identical in both cases; yet, I adore them all, as both my Father and my Mother love my sister and me! And there is more to relish in God’s buffet-line smorgasbord than piquant SAT scores and savory STEM Core classes; such as one’s opinion of haute couture beachwear, algebra, and fresh hot croissants - not to mention our bizarre relationship with the covetous, malnourished picnic ant, hoping for a leftover morsel. Ants in Hawaii implore gnarly, noshing surfers: “Dude, may I have a minuscule bite of this moldy baguette?” and the response: “I’m going to drown you in Raid!” is, I confess, tempestuously melodramatic seashore
When I began my journey to college, I truly believed I knew what I was doing. I was excited for classes like Calculus and Physics, because they provided me with firm and concrete answers, for which I had a strong affinity. I wasn’t interested in other subject matters because they subjective and, in my mind at least, illogical. Those students in the “soft majors” were of no interest to me. In comparison to engineering, I thought economists were irrelevant, sociologists were impractical, and environmentalists were idealists. I was under the impression that there was a right way to approach a problem, and any alternatives were simply useless. A single approach should work for everyone and those who attempted to look at an issue through a lens
Started out as an enthusiast of history and philosophy, I happily scuba dived in the ocean of Youtube videos, non-fiction comics, and online forums. In a way, I was observing and chronicling the life of Walker Percy’s “dogfish” without fear of failure. There were plenty of dogfish in the ocean. No dogfish would have bitten me, or judged me, if I mistakened one dogfish for another. Two dogfish were arguing? I could take side, and it did not matter how much a dogfish paid me. Why did I exist and what was the purpose of those dogfish? Let’s find out. This carefree attitude allowed me to swim peacefully with the dogfish and even gave me more motivation to avoid or fix my mistakes.
