Leadership - Evolving Challenges and Demands
In many ways, leadership to me is an art form. There are very specific challenges and demands an artist will faces when completing a single piece of work. Artists will use their skills, abilities, creative processes, behaviors, and tools to meet their challenges and demands, drawing from past experiences, learning and input from trusted sources, time tested and proven techniques, and quite possibly a little innovation to overcome adversity and produce something which is amazing and often times can be closely replicated but never repeated. In essence, the results are unique because the situation is unique. A good leader in today's world works in much the same form and fashion, using similar experiences

The best way to do this is look for someone who shares your values, is proactive, and has a proven track record of success. This process will involve you learning what values are, taking a look at your inner-self and determining what your guiding principles will be. James Kouzes and Barry Posner (2012) state this; "You have to discover what you care about, what defines you, and what makes you who you are. You can be authentic only when you lead according to the principles that matter most to you. Otherwise you're just putting on an act." Once you have defined your guiding principles, find that mentor who will share their experiences with you in the most open an collaborative …show more content…
In-N-Out performs on this exceptionally well, in large part the credit goes to its' founders Esther and Harry Snyder. With a limited menu of burgers, french fries, soft drinks, and milk shakes, the Snyder's priorities and driving purpose behind their business practices were simple: serve its' customers fresh, high-quality food with efficient, friendly service in an ultra-clean environment. This original menu and Christian based business philosophy have remained intact through the decades. Maintaining control to achieve and keep high standards was paramount to the Snyder's. These driving business principles help create a shared vision with new employees, all of whom start at the same level; working their way up from handing out food, cleaning the restaurant, and taking out
Leadership is all about having the right amount of heart and determination to help make a difference in someone’s life. It takes certain qualities to be considered a good leader. A leader should want to help inspire others to make a change and to be the best that they can be. A true leader does not need to feel powerful, instead they empower those around them. Throughout my life I have come across various leaders who have made an impact on my life. It takes a very special person to inspire and touch people’s lives. Leadership is so much deeper than having power and bossing people around.
In the history of fast food chains, In-N-Out began as a small joint and quickly developed through the years into a global phenomenon, attracting people ranging from celebrities to tourists from around the world, making itself distinct from the other average burger joints. According to the In-N-Out website, Harry and Esther Snyder first opened its doors in 1948 and “served the freshest burgers, coolest shakes and the hottest fries in a friendly, sparkling-clean atmosphere and has kept the menu the same till present year 2017”(In-N-Out). Keeping a relatively simple menu has allowed this burger joint to attract more customers by focusing solely on perfecting their food. The current stores, having followed Harry Snyder’s philosophy, “keep it real simple, do one thing and do it the best you can” has
Leadership is a personal skill that has to be developed and improved upon daily, just like an athlete works on his craft. We all come from different walks of life and that is often a factor in the way our leadership styles are shaped. Our differences of race, gender, religion, home environment, and lifestyle all have an effect on the way we are led growing up. It is a skill that is mastered over time, while never being perfected. Like anything else in life, leadership skills are often developed from who we are, where we come from and the people in our life who have taught us their knowledge.
Wkipedia defines leadership as "a process of social influence in which a person can enlist the aid and support of others in the accomplishment of a common task"1. When one thinks about leadership several images come to mind, for example, a political person who is motivated by a personal cause or a an CEO developing a company’s sales strategy. I believe that a good, efficient and effective leader has many different qualities and does not operate under or display one leadership style, but will take on and portray a mixture of leadership styles.
Leadership is something that people are born with. It is an inherent charm and it doesn’t hide even if you want to hide it. There is a leader amongst us and he or she is the one that leads other people to great things by inspiring and motivating people to do good deeds. Leadership has been described as “a process of social influence in which one person can enlist the aid and support of others in the accomplishment of a common task”. This way a leader can decide what work goes in and goes out. Good leaders in history have left a mark in walks of life. But great leaders, they’re different. Great leaders have the ability to make each and every individual re-think their life decisions and choices by
It was all over the news when the terrorist attacks happened in Paris. It was devastating to the families and people who live them found it difficult to cope. Many families migrated to the US to settle down with their remaining families that survive the tragedy. It was devastating all around the world and issues still remains unresolved till this day. After the tragedy, the US governors in each state were prepared and some were not prepared to accept refugees to reside in the state in which they are governing. A Republican Gov. Mike Pence, who is the governor of Indiana clearly and loudly declared the refusal of the Syrian refugees and suspended the resettlement of the families in Indiana. Gov. Mike
The journey that will assist in building a credible leader encompasses a self-assessment of an individual’s guiding principles
According to Webster’s Dictionary, leadership is the power or ability to lead other people, the act or instance of leading. I believe that Leadership is an art, the art to get others to follow and accomplish a common goal or task in a harmonic manner. A leader can be shown in all kinds of shapes and forms. To be a great leader many people believe it consists of modeling the way, inspiring a shared vision, enabling others to act, and encouraging the heart. Over the course of me learning how to become a better leader and being in leadership roles, I’ve learned that all these are very necessary to be a great leader.
Leadership is defined as the ability to accomplish a set goal(s) due to the act of inspiring and motivating a group of your peers. Former United States president Dwight D. Eisenhower made famous a quote that stated, “Leadership consists of nothing but taking responsibility for everything that goes wrong and giving your subordinates credit for everything that goes well.” (Notable-quotes.com). One of the most important aspects of the work area is leadership. Without leadership, there will be no guidance to for teamwork and the percentage of successful goal will be slim to none. Becoming a great leader is no easy feat however. An exceptional leader must lock in on specific attributes such as intellect, moral character, and human
My idea of leadership is being able to inspire others, motivate, set a vision, communicate, respect others, and of course, lead by example. A leader must have an honest understanding of who they are, what they know, and what they are capable of. To be a successful leader, you have to be able to convince your followers, not just yourself or your superiors, that you are worthy of being followed. In my opinion, this can build confidence in their followers to have faith in you, in order to be able to lead. I strongly believe that good leaders are made rather, and not born. If you have the desire and willpower, you can become an effective leader. Good leaders are developed through a never ending process of self-study, education, training, and
From Mahatma Gandhi and Nelson Mandela’s charisma, to Winston Churchill and Martin Luther King’s intelligence and Steve Jobs’ analytical nature, there can be as numerous ways to lead as there are leaders (Crossman, 2010). Leadership is a hot debate both in the business world and other areas of the society. Throughout the world's, there have been as many leadership models as there have been their commentators (Burns & Peltason, 1966). Fortunately, psychologists and businesspersons have established useful frameworks that refer to the main ways of leadership.
McDonald’s will stay a giant because of price, recognition, and convenience but I have never heard anyone say they want to go there because the burgers are so fabulous tasting. On the other hand, the only thing I have ever heard about In N Out is what awesome burgers they have. Quality is something In N Out has vowed never to compromise and have implemented unique ways of insuring it isn’t. In order to manage the quality of food being sent to each store, Rich built a commissary where all food was delivered and inspected, then driven out to each store location. This has its down sides, like only being able to supply locations within a day’s drive, but according to Rich that will help maintain quality (Pg. C-37). It guarantees the freshness of the food and ultimately customer satisfaction. In N Out has achieved success by maintaining a simple motto, “Give customers the freshest, highest quality foods you can buy and provide them with friendly service in a sparkling clean environment” (Pg. C-36). Even after growing to over 250 locations, In N Out has not compromised quality. In addition to providing high quality food, In N Out believes in taking care of its employees by training and paying them well. “Store managers at In-N-Out make at least $100,000 a year and are eligible for monthly bonuses tied to store sales” (Business Week). Rich Snyder believed in the inverted management triangle that is more representative of the Japanese business culture than our own
Leadership is defined in Webster’s Dictionary as the “action of leading a group of people or an organization.” Leadership is also the ability to set trends, inspire, motivate, and sway others to produce desired results. There are different styles and ways of performing leadership and a good leader has the ability to take ordinary people, put them all together, and hopefully yield successful results. For organizations to have sustained results from their performance there must be a good balance of business insight, technical and interpersonal skills, and good team dynamics. A leader must know how to use all these areas as well as trust and communicate with their people in
Being able to lead a group or someone is a very powerful action. Being a leader in general is very powerful. Leadership is an art that is painted, sculpted, and displayed in all sorts of ways. There are many different styles of leadership that correspond with different tasks. From transformational leadership to laissez-faire leadership, there are various styles throughout the continuum. A transformational leader is one of the best, more successful leadership style. When going down the continuum, the leadership styles only become less effective. Everyone also falls in distinctive categories when it comes to leading others. The leadership style that is displayed depends on the person leading and those who are being led along with the task.
Leadership is not just about the title, the position or the duration one has been in a certain office. It takes more than just that to be sufficiently effective. In our society today, there is quite a number of the so called ‘leaders’ who do not really deserve to be called by that title because they do not effectively live up to the expectations of the mandate in which they are called or trusted with. There are some qualities or attributes that are necessary in the life and operation of a leader which make him an effective leader. Some of those qualities include ethics, effective communication, trustworthy, engaging themselves at their best, being creative with credibility, and having a character and not just competence. All these
