Current Leadership Issues and Assessment
It was all over the news when the terrorist attacks happened in Paris. It was devastating to the families and people who live them found it difficult to cope. Many families migrated to the US to settle down with their remaining families that survive the tragedy. It was devastating all around the world and issues still remains unresolved till this day. After the tragedy, the US governors in each state were prepared and some were not prepared to accept refugees to reside in the state in which they are governing. A Republican Gov. Mike Pence, who is the governor of Indiana clearly and loudly declared the refusal of the Syrian refugees and suspended the resettlement of the families in Indiana. Gov. Mike

This means that he wanted a full proof that there were no terrorist in the midst of the refugees who wanted to settle in Indiana.
The influence tactics used by Gov. Mike Pence
As the governor of Indiana, he power tactics used to influence the people are legitimacy and rational persuasion (Alanazi & Arnoldo, 2003). Legitimacy tactics is exercised by the person who the powers have been invested upon and when he gives an order, it must be followed by the people below. Also, Gov. Mike Pence used rational persuasion tactics to influence the people in such that he received expert information that the Paris bomber has been seen as a Syrian refugee (Wang, 2003). Evidently, Gov. Mike Pence interpreted that as major threat to the security of the people of Indiana.
The leadership style of Gov. Mike Pence
Gov. Mike Pence has always accepted refugees from Syrian however; he had to use an authoritative leadership style in this case for the safety of Indiana was his first priority as the leader. He decided to take the decision of refusing the resettlement of the Syrian refugees in Indiana. His decision was final with the condition that the state is to assure him that the refugees are not a terrorist and they were not linked to any of the Paris bombers (Wang,
It's always good to look at patterns of reasoning and behavior of candidates for public office. For example, Mike Pence as governor of the state of Indiana issued a ruling saying that he will not allow any Syrians to be placed in the state of Indiana—with federal money. So, the states receive substantial grants from the federal government to aid in the resettlement of refugees, including Syrians.
The idea of Syrian refugees emerging over to the United States seems to have been the talk for the past few years here in the United States. Although, over the years the argument of whether Syrian refugees should be granted the opportunity to enter the United States or to not to be able to, has always been a tough compromise. For countless of years refugees have been fleeing their homeland to find a new place to call home just to get away from the war. In spite of refugees fleeing the countries, many of the families are having a hard time trying to find new homes. However, the United States has to protect its country from the possible terrorists that the Syrians could bring with them if we allowed them to enter the United States. The civil war over in Syria has Syrians continuing to fight for their lives every day. Syrian refugees should not be allowed to enter the United States for the substantial amounts of attacks that those Syrians could pose.
The topic about Texas stepping out of the federal refugee resettlement has been causing controversy since November of 2015. Nevertheless, before introducing the topic, we should know that the term “refugee” can be defined as “person who is unable or unwilling to return to his or her home country because of a “well-founded fear of persecution” due to race, membership in a particular social group, political opinion, religion, or national origin.” (Johnson). The controversy caused about this topic is due to Texas governor’s concerns about security threads from the Syrian refugees, however, the Federal government has a security process that is applied to every refugee that entries in the country. Moreover, we will review the next question: What is the government’s legal process to let the refugees in the United States?
states cannot legally refuse Syrian Refugees without the approval of the federal government first. According to Stephen I. Vladeck, an American university law professor says that, “Legally, states have no authority of the question of who should be let into this country is one that the Constitution commits to the federal government.” Also, he added that, “Without the state’s participation, the federal government would have a much more arduous task.” Stephen finally added that, “… So a state can’t legally sat it is objecting, but it can refuse to cooperate, which makes things much more difficult.” Also, Kevin Appleby, the director of immigration policy for the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, says that, “The federal government has the plenary power and the power of the 1980 Refugee Act to place refugees anywhere in the country.” ‘More than 250,000 people have died in the country of Syria and at least 11 million people have left the country since the Syrian Civil War has broken out,’ according to the United Nations, and ‘about 51.13636% of the Syrian population has been killed or fled their homes’ and has been discussed elsewhere (Fantz, Ashley, and Ben Brumfield. “Syrian Refugees Not Welcome in 31 States – CNN.com.”, and Yan, Holly. “Refugee Crisis: Pressure Builds for U.S. to Take in More Syrians –
The U.S. should let Syrian refugees in the United States to settle, but only a select few. According to Elizabeth McBride, a writer for NBC.com, Razan is a mom of a family of four from Damascus. Her family left after their youngest son, Ibrahim, witnessed his father getting killed in a protest against the Syrian government. Looking at this example, it becomes clear that some Syrians
Out of fifty states, thirty one state Governors said they will not be accepting Syrian refugees into their states. States that will be not letting Syrian refugees in are, Alabama to Georgia, to Texas and Arizona, to Idaho and Indiana. With that said, there will also be States that will be accepting refugees and helping with the relocation. These states are Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Pennsylvania, Vermont, and Washington. Leaving only twelve states undecided on if they will help relocate and resettle the refugees. Although due to the 1980 refugee act the Federal Government has the power to place refugees anywhere in the country. So a state can’t say it’s legally objecting, but can refuse to cooperate making it very difficult for the Federal Government to do anything. Penn state law Professor Shoba Sivaprasad Wadhia says “States play a role in working with the Federal Government when refugees are resettled , but the overarching authority rest in Federal law.
President Barack Obama has announced that the United States plans to take in 10,000 refugees. For many Americans, this is a number far too large, but others disagree. With millions of refugees leaving their home-country of Syria because of a civil war, many people wonder, is the U.S. helping as much with this dilemma as they can and should? Some countries have taken in so many migrants it’s caused a population spike, while others have done little or nothing at all. (Martinez) The United States has accepted only 1,500 Syrian refugees into its borders since civil war broke out four years ago (Edelman). When compared to the 4.1 million refugees that need our help, 1,500 is a pitiful number. Because this crisis is of such large proportions, the
The main advocate for this is Ted Cruz who argues that Christian refugees should be accepted from Syria because they pose no risk of committing acts of terror, similar to those of ISIS and muslim terrorists (as cited in Davidson, 2015). Obama responds to this by saying how this is a shameful act and is not what America was built upon (as cited in Winston, 2015). He also believes that for this idea to come out of Cruz’s mouth is shameful because he and some other people have come from families who have benefited from the protection received when they were fleeing political persecution in search of more
REFUGEES ARE GETIING INSIDE THE COUNTRY! A refugee is “one who flees for safety esp. to a foreign county” (dictionary.com). There is war going on with Syria that places civilians in danger. President Bashar is against rebel groups ranging from long time dictatorship. The two main opposing sides are if we should help refugees and take them in with open hands or mind our business and have them go back to their country regardless of the situation. There’re are many challenges young Muslim’s from Syria face such as war crimes, in need of a safe place to go, and racism.
Denying the entrance of Syrian refugees into certain states sabotages the values America’s founders instilled in the United States. The people inhabiting this country in the next century will find it difficult to know that their ancestors let this injustice slip through. Especially due to the previous occurrence that was deemed as a wrong doing to the Jewish people. The exclusion of a certain race is archaic in current times, let alone in the views of the next generation. Due to the Syrian civil war, many people are being forced to leave their home country in hopes of a better quality of life. The constant violence, lack of adequate healthcare, and ravaged economy are all reasons why the so many Syrians are escaping the country (“What You Need…Impact on Children"). They lack the many commodities that the American general public take for granted. Large masses are leaving with no plan for where the journey will take
Women, men, and children from West Africa are migrating to Europe because of the instability and violence that is taking place in Syria, Iraq, and Eritrea. According to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), “About 710,000 people” are crossing the european border. The vast migration is causing an increase on human trafficking, since traffickers and smugglers are taking advantage of the refugees. The IOM is reaching out to European countries “to spend more resources against sex trafficking,” in order to relocate and reduce the amount of refugees that are being victimize. A plan to resettle 10,000 Syrian refugees in the United States has being criticize because people are concern about the national security of the nation. The GOP presidential candidates are against the resettlement program. According to them the Syrian refugees post a threat to the national security of the United States. While, the Democratic presidential candidates want to increase the number of refugees that are going to be admitted. The refugees crisis has become the worst humanitarian Crisis in the world today. As citizens we have to sympathize with them and provide a
Currently, the United States has only accepted 1,500 refugees from Syria, a number that is expected to double before this year ends. As countries in closer proximity to Syria and “Europe’s worst humanitarian disaster since World War Two” (Collinson, CNN.com), become overwhelmed with the burden of aiding the refugees, the pressure on President Obama, the State Department, and all political figures in America to take a stand has grown substantially. The State Departments spokesman John Kirby, talking about the refugees in need, stated that he “expects to see the U.S. take in even more going forward” (Collinson, CNN.com). The
The issue with this is most states across the country have different policies when accepting refugees. With only Rhode Island, Connecticut, Delaware, Vermont, Pennsylvania, Kentucky, Minnesota, Colorado, Montana, Washington, Oregon, and California accepting refugees, the rest are denying entrance. High-level politicians like Jeb Bush and Ted Cruz have called for the entrance of only Syrian Christians. Others, like Texas governor Greg Abbott are refusing participation in programs, this prevents refugees from entering Texas based on fear of any connection to
In September of 2015, President Obama pleaded towards his administration to allow entry for 10,000 Syrian refugees into the United States. This sparked a lot of controversy between millions of Americans due to the threat of possible “terrorist sleeper cells”. The feelings of this can, partly, be contributed towards the emerging terrorist organization, ISIL/ISIS (Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant). Despite these feelings, there are also many citizens that believe that our nation must act humanitarianly and urge legislatures to allow these refugees admittance into our country. In the article, “Obama Increases Number of Syrian Refugees for U.S. Resettlement to 10,000”, the authors Gardener Harris, David Sanger, and David Herszenhorn discuss President Obama’s call-to-action and give details that support the allowance of Syrian Refugees into the United States. Contributing writer, David Sanger, is a chief Washington correspondent for The New York Times and he has covered many issues, like: foreign policy, globalization, and nuclear proliferation. Mr. Sanger writes about many of the struggles that the refugees may face when attempting to gain access into the United States and discusses many views from outside politicians and professionals.
An increase in terrorist attacks across the globe by a group being called the Islamic state of Iraq in Syria has sparked up a debate about President Obama’s administration plan to bring Syrian refugees into the United States. There has been so much talk referring to the subject about Syrian Refugees. Limiting the time frame between Obama’s first term and now coming up to his last few months in office, President Obama has addressed to make changes for all of Americans in the United States including the ones born and the ones residing in the states.
