Those leaders that are frequently nervous, annoyed and irritated can be emotionally toxic leaders. Many leaders from this category are often overwhelmed by these negative emotions and they cannot even be aware of the negative consequences they produce (Goleman, 2005).

As a Naval Officer I had the opportunity to experience both leadership and management. Today's Navy operates with fewer people and resources than before. Therefore, leadership and management are more important than ever. Very early in my career I was taught leadership and as I advanced through the ranks I experienced management.

Another leadership strength I possess is motivating subordinates. I often encourage coworkers to strive for their goals, whether it be going back to further their education or changing jobs. I truly believe if we are unhappy the retention rates are lower and their work is not high-quality. I often motivate subordinates by offering rewards for exemplary work. A recent night shift two staff nurses and myself received eight admissions in four hours—the reward that night was ice cream.

As an officer in the United States Army, it has been imperative for me to understand every facet of leadership and why it remains important to be an effective leader. During this course, I have learned some valuable lessons about myself as a leader and how I can improve on my leadership ability in the future. The journal entries along with the understanding of available leadership theories have been an integral part of my learning during this course. The Trait Approach was the 1st systematic attempt to study leadership. In the 20th century it was known as the “great man” theory.
