Northouse 's, Leadership: Theory and Practice, provides several major theories and models of leadership within the text. It presents in-depth theories of leadership and how it applies to real life situations. Northouse believed that the four essential components of leadership that he identified as leadership is a process, involves influence, occurs in groups, and involves common goals. Thus, he defines leadership as a process that occurs in groups which involve influence, and common goals. The book is easy to read and is a good reference to continue to consult throughout one 's leadership vocation.
Personal reflection From this book, I gained the perspective that leadership is a process and is not necessarily something that is born with and that it is a transactional event that occurs between leaders and followers. This is something that I found interesting as I had the notion that one was either a born leader or he was not. Therefore, leadership is something that can be developed and is available to anyone that is willing to put forth the effort in educating themselves on the subject. I found that the chapter on servant leadership that Northouse provided was interesting as it is consistent with Christ 's example. He describes a servant leader as one who places the good of the followers over their own self-interests, empowers them, and help them develop to their full potential. Leaders who engage in servant leadership are likely to improve outcomes at every level and
According to the textbook, Introduction to Leadership: Concepts and Practice, there are over 100 definitions of the word “leadership”, and all of them are unique in their own way (Northouse, 2015, p.1). There are so many different aspects to leadership that is it nearly impossible to have one definition that covers every area. Each and every person that is a considered a leader has his or her own way of leading because every situation, whether it be work, a team, at home, etc., calls for different and distinctive ways of leading people. Northouse states that there are six main aspects of leadership; it’s a trait, ability, skill, behavior, relationship, and an influential process (Northouse, p. 3-6). Giving a clear answer as to what leadership is defined as is very difficult, but this paper will talk about my specific leadership skills and what leadership means to me.
In Leadership: Theory and Practice Peter G. Northouse examines various leadership styles and also looks at the concept of leadership from different perspectives. As a future leader I used Northouse's book to explore my leadership styles and ways to apply them in
Throughout the entire course of this class, I have been asked to fill out different self-assessments related to whatever topic or approach to leadership Peter Northouse (2013) was discussing in his book Leadership Theory and Practice. Each one of these self-assessments were intended to help me in discovering who I was as a person and a leader. Some of the leadership self-assessments included the Least Preferred Coworker Measure from the Contingency Theory chapter, the Leader-Member Exchange Questionnaire from the Leader-Member Exchange Theory chapter, and the Servant Leadership Questionnaire from the chapter that discussed Servant Leadership. Many of these questionnaires I found to be very effective in helping me discover more about my personality traits and leadership style.
One quality that was highly emphasized throughout the book was the attribute of servant leadership. A servant leader is “the highest expression of the human spirit” (Fisher & Martini , 2004, p. 151) emphasizing on the empowerment of followers to accomplish organizational goals (Lussier & Achua, 2013, p. 345). Ultimately, a servant leader places the needs of others ahead of their own displaying empathy, kindness, honesty, humility and respect for others. Offering methods in becoming a servant leader, Fisher and Martini recommend the imitation of great leaders from the past (Fisher & Martini, 2004, p. 143). An exemplary model for servant leadership is Jesus Christ sense He defined leadership in Matthew 20:26-28, “Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first
Northouse defines leadership is a process whereby an individual influences a group of individuals to achieve a common goal.
The text will cover a number of different aspects of leadership. We will consider my personal understanding of leadership and it relates to certain leadership theories. In my philosophy of leadership, I will address what role I believe a health care leader should play, what leadership theory they should follow, and why leaders should follow that theory. It will describe my current sphere of influence and how it has shaped my understanding of leadership. I will explain how I am a leader in my current position and how I apply my leadership philosophy within my position. Then I will provide how I see the use of informal, formal, positive and negative power as it applies to my personal philosophy of leadership.
Authors, Lewis, Parkard, and Lewis, cited Northouse’s definition of leadership as a “process in which an individual influences a group of individuals to achieve common goals” (Lewis, Parkard, & Lewis, 2012).
According to Northouse Leadership is the the interactive process with an ethical dimension where one person influence the group of people towards a common shared goal. Since it is a common goal, there should be an appropriate agreement between the one who is leading and the group of people who are led.
As we know that, leadership is nothing. But the influencing flowers. Leadership includes three fundamental clusters of skills creating vision, garnering commitment to that vision, an managing progress toward the realization of that vision. powerful and effective leaders plays very vital role to reach the maximum production for any organization.
Classical organisational theorist defined leadership in terms of achieving a group’s objectives R.C Davies (1942) referred to leadership as “the principle dynamic forces that motivates and coordinates the organisation in the accomplishment of its objectives.” Similarly, Urwick (1953) stated that the leader is “the personification of common purpose not only to all who work under taking, but to everyone outside it.” K. Davies (1962) defined leadership as “the human factor which binds a group together and motivates it towards goals.” Cattell (1951) took the extreme position that leadership is whatever or whoever contributes to the group’s performance. To measure each members Leadership, Cattell noted, removed him or her from the group, one at a time, and observe what happens to the group’s performance. Calder (1977) and Pfeffer (1977) “stated that leadership is mainly influence and is even attributed to participants after the fact.
This paper is a briefing document that proposes a logical philosophical, hypothetical cover on leadership, assessing the ways the theory and practice connected into a synergistic shape, by evaluating structures of leadership. I will endeavour to illuminate, by examination, the significance of thoughts and ideas around leadership; I will give an individual reflection towards the end of this paper on the collaborative effort and an individual personal
Leadership plays a significant role in many different areas of peoples everyday lives. Businesses, communities, and organizations all use and need leaders to make things run efficiently. A lack of effective leadership can create many difficulties in all aspects of life. “Servant leadership is a philosophy and set of practices that enriches the lives of individuals, builds better organizations and ultimately creates a more just and caring world” (Liden, Wayne, Liao & Meuser, 2014, p. 1435). The capacity to be a servant leader to meet the needs of the people that you are leading was encompassed throughout the book The Servant by James Hunter (2012). Hunter (2012) describes leadership as “the skill of influencing people
Leadership is a process of influencing activities of a particular group of people with the aim of attaining certain stipulated goals. In defining leadership there is need to consider a particular group, the common goals and the duties that are allocated to specific members of the group depending on their abilities (Fiedler 1976). Leadership therefore cannot successfully occur unless members of the group are given different considerations in terms of personality, traits and responsibilities. In considering leadership, it is important to look at the leader, the group or organization they are leading, the members as individuals and the situation; these are
In the Textbook, “The Art of Leadership, 5th Edition,” written by George Manning and Kent Curtis, provides insightful information about the role of leaders in today’s society and the kind of values and skills that they possess. In the preface of the text (Manning & Kent, 2015,) the authors write, “the study of leadership is multidisciplinary with contributions from history, philosophy, psychology, political science, business, and education. The fifth edition of The Art of Leadership combines behavior theory with busi- ness practice to teach central concepts and skills in leadership.” This essay will discuss a total of 16 of the concepts and skills that the quote mentions, taken from chapters one, two, three, six, fourteen, fifteen, sixteen,
Leadership has been studied from a wide range of perspectives and thus it means different things to different people. Some people view leadership as the focus of group processes, some others view it from a personality or skills perspective, to some others leadership is an act or behavior, some school of thought describe leadership in terms of power relationship while some view leadership as a transformational process (Northouse, 2012). Looking at the various definitions of leadership, there are various terms that are important; including the fact that leadership is a process that involves influence and the attainment of a common goal, and usually occurs in the context of a group (Northouse, 2012). The path-goal theory is one of the
