“As a professional athlete a lot is going to be said about you - but I just try to move forward and try to achieve my goals” (“LeBron James”). Every athlete goes through media scrutiny but James’ ride through the media is like no other. LeBron James was born in 1984 with no father and just his mom in Akron, Ohio. They moved couch to couch and some nights were on the streets until his mom let him stay with his football coach until she could get back on her feet. James grew up to be an NBA superstar straight out of high school and is one of the most supernatural and versatile players in the league. The media broadcasted his decision and began reporting what he did or said subsequent to his decision. LeBron James' basketball ability urges the media to report and often criticize everything he does. The media focus on James has been going on for years, since he’s been a big name in the league for almost a decade now. It started when James made his first decision to leave Cleveland and go to Miami to join the Heat. ESPN made James looking like a diva as they set up his decision in 2010 with an hour long TV special that ended with James taking his talents to South Beach (Heisler). However, they neglected to mention the 3 million dollars the show was making, which James donated to charity. James was the main person blamed for this TV special, but he made no money on it and it wasn’t even his idea. It was ESPN. ESPN controls sports media which gave them the power to hype up the sickening decision that James had to make in the offseason. Viewers ate it up so they decided to broadcast his decision to up their viewership even more than the hype did. He’s had fans in Cleveland since he was a rising star in high school and was drafted straight to the NBA by the Cavaliers and by then everyone in Ohio knew who James was. When James was in Cleveland for his first seven years he turned the Cavaliers from a mediocre team with hardly any arena attendance to championship contenders with sold-out crowds. His owner that had the audacity to talk poorly about James was making the most money off of James not to mention that Cleveland’s economy took a huge jump pouring in millions of dollars per year (Groves). Now that the man Cleveland once loved is coming back he’s predicted to restore his Cleveland fans faster than he lost them. They know James as the superstar he is, including his unselfish play style that has shown off the court as he’s thinking more about Cleveland with this decision rather than himself (Lariviere). He has realized that his relationship with Ohio is “bigger than basketball” and made the decision through that perspective (Cohen).
