Les Claypool was born September 29 1963, in Richmond, California, But was raised in El sobrante, and at the age of fourteen he took up bass guitar. At school he was friends with kirk hammett of Metallica, who encouraged les to audition for Metallica when bassist, Cliff Burton died. During les’ audition he jokingly referenced a thrash metal scene, asking if they wanted to “jam on some isley brothers tunes”. For several years before forming Primus (one of his most popular bands), les worked as a carpenter In El sobrante. When he formed Primus, it was originally called Primate, made up of him, Todd huth and a multitude of drummers, the most notable being jay lane.
