Hosting the Dalai Lama means that Santa Clara University wants to have its students become leaders with values. Values such as compassion, awareness, and intelligence will make a leader that not only is well respected by coworkers but also trusted in their position of management. The Dalai Lama teaches how important it is to have ethics and compassion engrained in a lifestyle and business world. Students attending this seminar will be exposed to a new kind of knowledge allowing them to learn how to work and lead effectively. I believe that Santa Clara University is making a mark on students that goes beyond their college years or career. It realizes the importance that lies in technical knowledge and life skills. Compassion is important to the corporate world because as the Dalai Lama believes, it is a part of being human. Sometimes being human is not associated with business; however, I think it’s important for students to learn how to be compassionate. The importance of compassion will allow workers to have more tolerance towards people and pay attention to the big picture and let go of minor details so they work more efficiently towards their goal. Powerful and compassion are often not thought about in a combination. The Dalai Lama is a living example of how to put both of those qualities together. He is powerful in a respect that he has the influence to make a large impact on the world yet he only uses his power to do good to his people.
In today 's world, the role of technology has become primal and a necessity in our daily lives. In The Dalai Lama, we are able to see the astounding capabilities that the new technological advancements are able to do. However, to only a certain extent are these advancements beneficial, as these improvements can as well lead to serious matters in regards to our system of ethics and moral reasoning. By being able to establish a limit on the use of these advancements, it is possible to create a balance between the benefits of the technological improvements and being able to maintain a system of global ethics. The role of genetic manipulation, cloning and selection of traits all have potential in providing humanity with assistance in making daily living an unchallenging asset.
In the Dalai Lama’s writing of The Role of Religion of Modern Society, I agree with him on how each religion can be true and help people to respect one another no matter the religion they practice. While growing up most humans are taught to practice one religion, in which they inherited from their parents and most of the time both parents practice the same religion. So children are taught to follow and believe that their religion is the most valid and true. In my case I disagree with these types of people and agree with The Dalai Lama, because I grew up both Jewish and Christian. Being able to learn and practice both religions, I noticed the similarities and differences and learned to believe each religion is true.
Most religious leaders come to power through elections or appointment. However, the leader of the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism, the Dalai Lama, is simply found. Buddhists believe in reincarnation, the idea that a person’s soul never dies and is instead born into a new body. Additionally, the death of one Dalai Lama spurs the quest for a young person born with that special soul. The search for the fourteenth
Compassion, which is an extension of empathy, is having the desire to help those who are suffering or in a crisis. Compassionate leaders are also humble leaders, displaying humility as they put the needs of others before their own. Leaders who possess a high level of compassion encourage healthy relationships and promote an emphatic work environment. Servant leaders are humble, focusing on doing good for others and ensuring the well-being and growth of others over their own personal needs (Neubert, Hunter, & Tolentino, 2016).
In “Ethics and The New Genetics” the Dalai Lama mentions that society lacks a moral compass due to social and economical boundaries with new science and technology. While doing so he discusses unbiased opinions about genetic advancements- medicine, cloning and genetically modified food- in society today, keeping in mind the long-term effects genetic changes have on society as a whole.
The Dalai Lama once said, “Major religious traditions carry basically the same message, that is love, compassion and forgiveness… the important thing is they should be part of our daily lives” (Huffington Post). This quote by the Dalai Lama speaks to the issues of pluralism and interfaith understanding. Pluralism is used to describe the diversity of different cultures and how they actively interact with one another. It engages the differences between cultures to obtain a deeper, more profound understanding of each other’s beliefs. To engage in pluralism means to equally support, accept and participate in the decisions of various religious groups as well as placing a positive value on faith and practice. In pluralism, all religious practices are considered beneficial as long as they follow the laws of the state and do not harm individuals within the community.
In the excerpt “Ethics and the New Genetics” by The Dalai Lama, also referred to as Tenzin Gyatso, demonstrates the use of new emerging uncoverings that scientists have made in genetic technologies and how progressive they are being enhanced to become. He argues how researchers are speaking about being able to developes the genetic make-up in productions to assist those who can not or have the convenience of having edible goods. Another thing that he speaks up about is how researchers have also detected a couple of particular types of making exact copies. One type of replication also referred to as cloning is remedial and the other is reproductive. In the Dalai Lama’s excerpt he stated that there is an exact time and place for when the
King used the teachings of Dalai Lama to provide the world with multiply opportunity of kindness.
The Buddhist teachings that Hahn talks about deep listening and being calm. Lucid, compassion and fighting violence with violence is a bad idea. To find the source of suffering will lead you to the source of violence. That ignorance and misunderstanding is the root of all evil. Being peaceful, practice non-discrimination. The Buddhist teachings that are found are carried throughout his work and peaceful movements. He uses these teachings to understand the issue and behaves in a calm and understanding way which makes more people likely to hear him out and understand him. Hahn applies these Buddhist teachings on how the world approach should be to bin Laden. He recommends going in a calm behavior and try to understand why what he did. Once he understands why he would try to understand why and explain his point. Hahn believes that once you develop a little bit of compassion, you will understand better and come up with more concrete ideas to fix the problem. He believes that there is a misunderstanding in-between them and if violence is fought with violence nothing will get done. Everything will become more violent.
For millennia, the deliberate development of compassion for all living beings, including oneself, has been one of the great healing traditions of Eastern wisdom. The Dalai Lama, for example, points out that compassion can quite literally transform our minds, and recent neuroimaging and behavioral research has supported this observation.
The Dalai Lama has also challenged adherents to accept the fate that is given to them and make the greatest use of their reincarnated form. As a young child he was unable to reject the position of ‘Dalai Lama’ however he has managed to utilise this position to the best advantage and has bettered the world through this. He has pushed for the bettering of the world for both religious and secular societies. His messages of peace, tolerance and the renunciation of the desires of anger and revenge have resonated with people globally.
Dalai Lama defines compassion as “being genuinely concerned for others” (45). He also defines being
While reading a chapter in Ideas Across Time I came across a portion of text written by the Dalai Lama. In the excerpt from The Art of Happiness, there was one statement that caused me to pause and reflect on my own Life and the journey that I have taken. The Dalai Lama commented that a person should strive to be good even though that person does not participate in any form or religion. I used to think that as long as I was a good and just person that was all God expected from me. I felt that was more than enough. Besides, with all of the scandals present involving pastors, who in their right mind would want anything to do with religion. It would take some time, but I would later learn that my spiritual life has nothing to do with other people.
He has been successful in gaining western sympathy and support. To many people in the West, the Dalai Lama is a peaceful man who has a wise mind. A number of western universities awarded him honorary degrees. The Dalai Lama has met with many western leaders and has held talks about politics and religion and he has visited many western countries. He is the writer of hundreds of books and they are available in English and some other languages. He also made a lot of advertisements and appearances in the West. The Dalai Lama has received many awards and one of them is the Nobel Peace Prize that he received in 1989. The Dalai Lama has a charismatic personality as most of the people described. Some western people find Buddhism an attractive religion because of the questioning practicing. Buddhist practices such as meditation are popular and widespread. Another reason why westerns love the Dalai Lama is that Buddhism is having a high profile. Also, Oriental Studies have been developed, which allowed westerns to understand
Among world leaders, there is no one like His Holiness the Dalai Lama, religious and political leader of Tibet and winner of the 1989 Nobel Peace Prize. Brought up from an unusual childhood, he became head of the state of Tibet at age 16, and was later forced into exile by the Chinese government. Through his fight for freedom, he has proven himself to be the spiritual and political leader whom the people of Tibet love.
