I consider myself more of a change agent than an advocate. When employed, I was a Six Sigma Greenbelt and Business Analyst. It was my position to be the change agent within many departments in the corporation. I reviewed processes and brainstormed solutions to improve deficiencies, then gain approval from associates and management to promote positive and quantitative change. In society, I have never been one that supports an agency through advocacy, with the exception of a few contributions here and there. But I have always been one to speak up when I feel an organization or other social system has done me or someone else wrong. I’ve written letters to congressmen, senators, governors, commissioners, mayors, superintendents of schools, …show more content…
I’m going to write a letter to Amnesty International to see if they can help me educate single parents on how to protect their child(ren) from being abducted by a putative father or non-custodial parent by having active custody orders in their school records at all times. I would like to study the “United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC), adopted in 1989 to protect the rights of children, . . .the most widely ratified human rights treaty in history” (Amnesty International). My career choice is also due to my need to be a change agent, after watching how substance abuse has destroyed so many lives within my life, my goal is to become a co-occurring disorder therapist or substance abuse counselor to be able to promote change in the lives of those needing help. I would like to be able to find ways to prevent substance abuse by possibly providing educational programs at the local schools. I also want to continue to serve God and witness to others of how having God walk with you every day, makes life so much easier. I witness whenever I can, as Jesus is the Answer to every problem that we are unable to handle on our
Identify the issue – advocacy begins with a problem or issue this could be environment, economic, social and other factors
In an attempt to evaluate the work of Amnesty International (AI) as an organization, we need to first delve into the historical background. Amnesty International is an international human rights organization established in 1961 by a small group of individuals to translate human rights principles in to practical action influenced by the impassioned newspaper describing the unjust imprisonment of two prisoners of conscience by a British lawyer, Peter Benenson (Amnesty International [AI], 2015). The group invited other people to join them in advocating for the release of prisoners in many countries who were in prison for expressing their beliefs. The organization started expanding by aligning with the suffering of individuals killed, tortured, and imprison for political reasons (Clark, 2007). Through such effort, Amnesty International started working for the protection of general human rights through legal means and public pressure at international level.
One of my main goals is to one day own and run my own foster home. I want my foster home to be just like a regular family house where the children can have a sense of belonging. My major will be extremely beneficial because I will have the knowledge and experience on children’s development. Therefore, I will be able to provide the care, education, and assistance that the children need in order to have a healthy development. While I am trying to find them a wonderful permanent family, however if a family is not found for a child I will continue raising the child and helping her/him fulfill their dreams. I will work with them and help them find options for their future whether it is schooling or another desired path. Overall, I want to help children
Link between Atwood’s as an advocate for Amnesty International with Offred’s need to “Speak” her own point of view about and within a society that demands silence and conformity. (Notice that the account is retrospective, recordings found on an archaeological site). Storytelling is the only possible gesture against the silences of death and history.
I was particularly struck by Saul Alinsky when he discoursed about people who demand for change but do nothing about it. Alinsky had a particular contention on the issue of means and ends, or in the terminology of informal education, on process and product. He was certainly aggravated by people who would not take action to uphold their principles. I would like to quote from chapter “Of Means and Ends” in Rules for Radicals, “He who sacrifices the mass good for his personal conscience has a peculiar conception of ‘personal salvation’; he doesn’t care enough for people to ‘be corrupted’ for them”. This made me question my own values and principles, and encouraged me to not only demand for change, but to establish concrete actions.
In To Light a Candle: Amnesty International and the Prisoners of Conscience, by William Kory, he highlights the history of NGOs and the significance it holds, the strives it made on a national level in the development of human rights with the campaign for the abolition of torture. Whereas in chapter 1 of Rita Arditti’s Searching for Life: The Grandmothers of the Plaza de Mayo and the Disappeared Children of Argentina she describes the horrific events that took place in Argentina when a corrupt government seized control and sought to eliminate anyone within Argentina who was considered a threat to them. These essays work hand in hand to further examine the time period of extreme torture but problematize our understanding of human rights because on one side of the country NGOs was getting established to prevent the torture that was happening on the other side of
My heart aches for women who endured sex trafficking. After college, I long to join the World Race, an 11-month humanitarian missions trip. Afterwards, I intend to obtain my Masters and intern with an international organization that helps women out of sex trafficking. My desire and motive is to help those women get back on their feet and teach them confidence, that they are priceless, worthy, and that they have purpose! I would like to start a non-profit that concentrates on improving women in their spiritual life, to become their best self, and be successful members of their society. When I was younger, I had dreams to change the world. At first I felt that to be studying nebulas, but I realized my change for the world is people.
Last class, we got to hear from Kate Parker, who is the Policy Director of Research and Advocacy at the Delaware Department of Justice. Kate Parker’s struggles with law school give me hope one day that I can complete it myself and become a successful lawyer (we’ll see about that though). She began her lecture by discussing the two parts of advocacy people can fight for: the big A and the little a. The big A resembled making sure everyone, or an organization/group of people, as a whole advocates for changes in laws to benefit the greatest number of people. This could be through emailing, calling, or meeting with an elected official to discuss the issues at hand. Little “a” advocacy calls for changes on a personal level, or for changes in organizations
Amnesty International (AI) is a 52 year old, non-government organization, which campaigns globally for human rights. That takes its mandate from the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which states that all people have basic fundamental rights that goes beyond national, cultural, religious and ideological boundaries. Their vision is of a world in which every person enjoys all of the human rights, irrespective of their religion, race, or gender. In pursuit of this vision, AI's mission is to conduct research and undertake actions, which primarily focus on preventing and ending all human rights abuses [1]. Today, AI is the biggest human-rights organisation in the world, 4.6 million supporters across 150 nations.
Amnesty International USA is the American branch of the multinational interest group Amnesty International. Amnesty is the largest grassroots organization in the world. A grassroots organization is one in which ordinary people make up the main groups of membership and leadership. The members of Amnesty International USA demand “human rights for all people – no matter who they are or where they are.” The “priority campaigns” listed on the Amnesty International USA website are “Human Rights Defenders” and refugee and migrant rights. As Human Rights Defenders, the members of Amnesty “protect the people on the front lines defending all of our rights.”2 Not only do Amnesty International members fight for human rights, but they also insure the safety of others fighting for human rights. Amnesty’s “priority issues” are abolishing the death penalty, national security and human rights, police accountability, gun violence, gender, sexuality, and identity, and individuals at risk.2
In 1961, two Portuguese students raising a toast to freedom were imprisoned for 7 years. Upon learning about the controversy, Peter Benenson, a British lawyer published The Forgotten Prisoners in the Observer newspaper. This became the article that launched Amnesty International and the worldwide campaign to take action and fight for human rights. Amnesty International or commonly called "AI" is a worldwide, non for profit organization that advocates and fights for human rights issues globally. As set forth in the Universal Declaration of Independence, Amnesty International campaigns to free prisoners of conscience, fight for women's rights, abolish the death penalty and ultimately restore and fight for human rights. In spite of recent controversy of the International NGO, Amnesty aims to create an abuse free world using volunteer members of more than 3 million to write and protest to government officials in order to protect human rights everywhere. Amnesty International is an efficient advocacy group that investigates global issues and seeks truths in order to protect and promote a peaceful world.
Amnesty International exists to combat human rights abuses They gather information and use it to expose the dark corners of regimes where people are tortured, killed, falsely imprisoned, etc. In short, rather than accept some fatalistic view that "that 's jsut the way things are (curse the darkness) they use facts and publicity (light a candle) to bring such crimes into the light. Focus area: The objective of the organisation is “to conduct research and generate action to prevent and end grave abuses of human rights, and to demand justice for those whose rights have been violated
My choice in an International, non-governmental organisation is Amnesty international. Amnesty International's only focus is improving human rights throughout in the world where it is very much needed. It is an extremely large organisation of 7 million people and the organisation has no political, religious, or economic ties (Amnesty International, 2016).
Amnesty International (AI) is a Non-Governmental Organization which has the stated mission to make ensure “a world in which every person – regardless of race, religion, ethnicity, sexual orientation or gender identity – enjoys all of the human rights enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) and other internationally recognized human rights standards (Our Mission, 2015).” In order to do this AI publishes research, takes actions that get the attention of governments and policy makers, and advocate for the advancement of human rights (Our Mission, 2015). It is on these three fronts that I have focused my research.
Amnesty International is a non profit organization that help in the fighting of human rights all around the globe, this organization was founded by Peter Benenson in United kingdom 1961.
