When I first started high school I was given the amazing opportunity to go down to the life skills room at Apollo Ridge and help with the students. When I first started to go to their room I have to admit I was very nervous. I personally do not like new things especially meeting new people. When I started to go I was just helping the students with learning new vocabulary words each week. We started with going through the stack of words so they could spell them too. Eventually we progressed to playing games with all of them. Whether it was on the computer, one on one, or just as a whole big group. I do have to admit that at times it got a little frustrating- but I loved working with all of them.
I went down every day during my ninth grade year

In my opinion I would have to say that both I and the students benefitted from me going down to the Life Skills Program. I think that the students benefitted because they were able to make new friends and by them making new friends it made them more outgoing and confident. I noticed that after the volunteers started to spend more and more time with the students the more they would reach out to talk to people that they didn’t know.
This experience has helped me because the students made me look at things differently. While there, we had learned about experiences of how they were bullied and how that affected them. Although they were bullied, they still welcomed and trusted people. It reminded me that just because someone is different, doesn’t mean they should be treated any different than how you would treat someone else. Having helped with these students will have a long-lasting effect on me because they showed me how to persevere and keep moving forward no matter how difficult something
Most of the things I learned from this experience was a sense of purpose, cooperation, and expansion of knowledge dealing with the various forms of discrimination, as well as oppression. As the semester passed, I felt like I was finally advancing towards a career field that fits me. The topic/subject made it to my list of fields I may want to pursue when I attend a University, which is another benefit gained from my class. Like many other high school students, my mind ponders on the thought of what I truly want to pursue in college, so this was a huge step for me. Oakland Community College gave me the opportunity to test the waters and depict an idea of what attending a University may be like, so that is to say how much one can really learn from an experience like mine. Another thing I learned was that not everything can be done at the last minute, the way you imagined it should be. There should be an excessive amount of planning and thought that goes into completing certain assignments and projects, I remember staying up on some nights just to complete two to four essays. As guilty as I am, sometimes working under pressure motivates and builds my energy up. There times when I would try to work on the assignments during my break at my job and even start on the outline of my
From this club I’ve learned people assemble and assisting each other on a project, can be very refreshing. Our club works together, getting certain things accomplished. However; all of us learn the same thing at the same time. I’ve also learned you don’t have to be rewarded for every good thing you do in life, sometimes the most rewarding things are just doing it in the first place. And I participating in theaters and know that I am a helpful person when it comes to helping people remembering their lines. And also I worked at the church café and learned my leadership skills there as well I have also applied it everywhere I go.
I love being able to get out of the normal day classroom and just see what a typical day would look like for me. I also really found the field trips very fun. I liked being able to go and see what people are doing as their jobs. I found it helpful because sometimes you only understand jobs from one view point, so being able to be right up and close with the whole process what a great experience for me.
Children in learning settings may come across various types of experiences like bullying, cyber-bullying, discrimination, etc. These types of experiences where perpetrator could also be a child or a group of children can disturb the process of learning. It also has long term effects on the child being bullied and the child/ group of children who are bullying.
Helping others can seem like a vague concept, but that’s honestly all I knew at first. As I worked my way through the courses, I learned about different ways of helping people. I learned not only how to help, but why we help. For me the most important
It really opened my eyes to how much positivity, love, and joy a person can have. I finished out that summer by volunteering a second week and had the same gratifying experience at the end. The following summer I volunteered for three weeks and realized I had found a passion for recreational therapy.
The life course perspective theory is a micro theory that delves into a subject’s past to interpret present endeavors that may assist in predicting future behavior or misconduct. It could be classified as a road map to an individuals expected behavior and may provide reasoning for that individuals’ life choices, not only in relation to criminal behavior but also on ones ability to sustain relationships.
I am applying for the Counseling Masters program because since a very young age I have felt the need to help people and make a difference. The school-counseling program would give me the necessary tools to help students build a strong foundation for their future. Ive always been interested in pursuing a career in counseling. For many, being a teen is one of the hardest stages of life, so learning how to help students and help establishing and unfailing support system for them to become prosperous adults is my number one goal. I am a focused hard working individual who’s passion as a perspective counselor drives me to learn all that I may need to deliver a solid education and reliable support system for my
Did you know that about 77% of the United states population have admitted to being bullied physically, mentally, verbally, and cyberly. When you read this you might think that this is terrible and why is it such a high number. Mrs. Mohr and her English decided to do something that could make a difference well in our school at least. Our job was to provide visual presentation showing what the problem is and/or the problem you want to resolve. Like my project consisted of three pictures showing teenagers teaching teenagers how to do things in sports and in school work, we all need to get along and work as a team to get certain things done the way they’re suppose to. We soon filled up the whole hallway next to the Visa MPR. This project helped me grow as a student and as a global citizen because we are not only trying to make a change by showing people pictures and telling people how it should be done we are trying to prove to people that some actions hurt people and you dont even know it and its wrong. I say this because when I was in middle school I was bullied because I was overweight and it would hurt when the other kids would be like get out of the way I can't see, this happened all three years of my junior high and I say this because now since I’ve been bullied I know what it is like so when I see students getting bullied I do what is best of my ability to help
Initially, When I started out I was the only adult student, and the rest of the students are high schoolers, my morning group is from Wekiva High School and my after group is from University High school and Evans High School. I’m glad I was able to meet them, they are all wonderful students and friends.
One helpful experience at George School is the experience of being a boarder. Living in the dorm means frequent interactions with classmates outside of the school time, and I learned how to show love & support for them when they have a bad day, and how to help comfort them when they feel stressed. Also, I had close friends who experienced severe anxiety, and I gained a deeper insight of how to help them and provide support for them to make them feel better.
In conclusion, a kindness program is better for student to learn that a classic anti-bullying program. The current anti-bullying programs are old, out of date, and proven are not effective whatsoever. Students need a new approach to deal with the modern day issues students face each and every day. I saw a drastic change in the behavior of the children who I would talk to and through experiencing this firsthand, I can say that this was a wonderful experience for myself and for the children, Not only have I proven that a kindness program is effective, I have also proven it can be done and results will be seen soon after beginning.
Throughout my life, I have encountered many different situations that have changed my perspective and made me learn true integrity, acceptance and kindness. School has always been a rough place for students and it may be hard for them to be accepted and make new friends. Ever since a bad situation happened to me, I did not want anyone to experience this again throughout their school experience. When I was a freshman, the memory I have that stood out to me was when a friend of mine was being bullied behind her back. I knew that this was not right considering they were my friends also. In class, they were saying things about her and planned to drop her as a friend. I confronted them immediately and told them what is right from wrong. They excluded
Life skill all about “The best way to solve the problem is to face the problem”
Why aren’t life skills taught in school? This leads into what the positive and negative effects of teaching these skills in the classroom are. Whether they are social, emotional, or physical effects. The type of people who are affected are high school students who are either being taught or not and if they want to gain knowledge of these skills. Also, sometimes the teachers who are using their time to incorporate these skills in the classroom as well as whats required. This can be an issue all over the world in high schools and can carry on past then. In Assessment of certain life skills among high school adolescents of Jaipur district, Jain and Goyal talk about the educational and social issues involved. Which include students not being able to reach their full potential due to the lack of proper guidance and motivation. In Life skill classes shouldn't replace academic subjects, the author talks about schools only having so much time to educate students and have to decide whether or not they are going to include life skills. Many believe that careers are based off of the core subjects and preparing students for jobs is more important. Also, that these core subjects are already a jumping point for learning life skills. What is causing controversies is the question of whether students should learn these skill in or out of the classroom.
