The Aura of Orange
Human, animal, plants, and all the Earth’s content is survivor. They are fighting for their rights in order to live in this beautiful world. The novel Life of Pi written by Yann Martel, has employed a lot of symbols that is related to the life. One of the most significant symbols is the color orange. The author uses orange as a symbol of maintenance of the spirit to survive in survival. This can be proved as most of the objects that are in the color orange in the novel generate feelings of hope, can develop courage in survivors, and last but not least can keep them continuously energetic; in order to strengthen their hearts and spirits to face all the possibilities in life.

Although Orange Juice is just a weak animal that never haunt any animal and just love to eat fruits, however, her courage overpowers her ability. As Pi monologue, “an adult female orang utan cannot defeat an adult male spotted hyena… What does fruit eater know about killing? Where would it learn where to bite, how hard, for how long?” (Martel 130). This is something amazeing as the orang utan is very brave to face the hyena. One of the reasons why Pi called the female orang utan as Orange Juice is because the orange animals do represent the courage in an animal. On top of that, Richard Parker the Bengal tiger also represent courage in an orange animal as he is being scared by the hyena. “The flame-colored carnivore emerged from beneath the tarpaulin and made for the hyena. The hyena was leaning against the stern bench, behind the zebra’s carcass, transfixed. It did not pull a fight. Instead it shrank to the floor, lifting a forepaw in a futile gesture of defense,” shows that the hyena was afraid of the orange Bengal tiger that look fierce on him (Martel 150). This is how the Bengal tiger stay to survive in the lifeboat on the spooky ocean. Therefore, it is true that orange is the color of courage; and this can spread up the spirit of survival to promote the important of life.
In order to maintain the spirit of survival, energy is very important both physically and emotionally,
The color red symbolics all of the colors and how each can have numerous emotions coming
Orange can represent an energy or enthusiasm, which can bring about the willingness to embrace new ideas with enjoyment and a sense of exploration, as Sumita now attempts to “Americanize” herself with her jeans and orange tee shirt and later with her “cream-and-brown skirt set (color of earth, color of seeds)” (269). The new thoughts about being a working woman in America in her husband’s store are reflected in the earthy colors, which symbolize something new planted, as she is newly planted in America, trying to grow.

Karanvir Dhami Ms. Yu ENG3U March 7, 2011 Symbolism in Life of Pi In Life of Pi there are many literary devices used to present the different themes in the novel. The main literary device used in Life of Pi is symbolism. Symbolism is often used to represent an object to something else, either by association or by resemblance. Most of the names of animals, objects and even humans in this novel have a symbolic meaning. In Yann Martel’s Life of Pi, symbolism such as pi’s name, the colour orange and the algae island, are used throughout the novel to provide Pi with protection to help him either survive or overcome his emotional pain. The mathematical pi is undefined, infinite and unable to be understood, just like Piscine Patel.
Oranges are rare in the winter and their encounter might be precious. They convey a powerful feeling. Making fire in the hands represents that he is in love. That he feels God like, he feels tough like he can do it all when he's around his girlfriend.
Survival is an instinct. Often times, in order to survive, people must shed a part of their innocence. For some, it may be subtle, taken in tiny bites along the way, and for others it could be in one traumatizing moment. Ang Lee, director of “The Life of Pi,” explores this theme throughout his film. Lee shows the viewer this loss in the use of imagery, lighting, and color. He takes the viewer on a journey through the eyes of Piscine Patel as his innocence and humanity slowly get chipped away and he is forced to do what is necessary to survive and the lengths he goes to to regain that lost innocence.
3. The colour orange appears many times in the novel "Life of Pi", as do the colours red and yellow, which together create orange. The colour red as an archetype symbolizes great passion, blood and sacrifice. The colour yellow symbolizes hope and happiness. Orange is a combination of these two archetypes. On page 153 in "Life of Pi", Pi remarks, "It seems orange---such a nice Hindu colour---is the colour of survival." Survival could be viewed as passion, sacrifice and hope all combined together.
The symbolism of colors across the novel plays a major role for many of the characters’ and their relationships, but they hold one of the

Life of Pi shows that humans and animals should do anything necessary to survive whatever challenges they face to live instead of just accepting death. Whatever ways that help one to survive are necessary, even if they compromise personal values, are vicious, or are wicked. Pi, a human; a hyena, and a blind man all fight to survive in a variety of ways that are examples of this thesis.
When one first watches the movie, one may quickly judge that the characters are in direct contrast to the colors they represent. In the movie, Tangie (orange) which means vitality with endurance plays the part of a promiscuous girl whose hatred for her mother drives her to do what she does. On further look at her character, I realize she is a true reflection of the color orange. She endures sexual abuse from her grandfather and faces abortion at a tender age but is still strong enough to overcome it and bring out her true beauty. The text also employ poems and songs to show the intensity of pain and emphasize the strength of each character and women in general.
Before even the start of the journey to Canada, Pi recalls an older Pi and his family in Canada. Usha who was an imaginary daughter was carrying an orange cat. This symbolizes that despite the fact that the story will not be a good one, there are hopes of survival. All the survival tools and aids are orange in color. The lifejackets in the lifeboat were orange, the whistle which he used to tame the tiger was also orange. Additionally, the orangutan Orange Juice which was orange in color helped him emotionally through keeping hope alive despite the eminent danger that he was in (Gale 19). Richard Parker the tiger was also orange and he saved him from the Frenchman who wanted to kill him. The orange color symbolically helped him survive through the 227 days that he was at sea (Gale
Due to Pi’s devotion to all of his faiths, particularly Hinduism, not only changed how he thought about his current situation, but also changed how he would think about every single situation after in Martel’s Life of Pi.
What if I told you something so simple and quotidian was actually complex and completely riveting. To most people orange is just an occurrence between the red and yellow spectrum. Maybe an orange is what you have in a bowl on your kitchen counter, patiently waiting to be picked as a snack. Orange is not so simple or mundane as many may believe. At a very young age I despised orange, the color as well as the fruit. The color reminded me of an unfavorable rusty wrench. The fruit itself was lumpy and bravely bold, exhibiting an unconfident standoff with my taste buds. This outlook is no longer true, yet now I truly believe orange is a beautiful color as well as a delicious fruit. Orange is unique, symbolic, and full of history.
Yann Martel’s Life of Pi is a prime literary example of the major impacts the roles of minor characters have on the plot of a story. Without such characters as the protagonist’s father, uncle, and brother, the entirety of the main characters’ lives would be shifted dramatically. So much, in fact, that the events of the novel may never have occurred had these secondary characters been absent.
