The role of lifestyle modification in the treatment of migraines is to prevent future migraines by identifying the triggers, finding suitable medications, and enforcing preventative measures. The first step of making a lifestyle change to treat migraines would be to identify the environmental triggers that cause migraines. There is not an identifiable cause of migraines because of the wide variety of them, but there are some known triggers that cause migraines. These include hormone imbalances in women, food triggers, changes in weather, and possible alcohol (Mayo Clinic). Some food triggers include cheeses, salty foods, and processed foods. By identifying these triggers, it is possible to prevent future migraines. The second step is to find
The project was to create a two-sided silhouette that represents your strengths, challenges, goals and who you are. The three biggest strengths I think I have are my ability to organize, listen and be on time. The three challenges I think of first are running, public speaking and learning new languages. I also have one short term goal and one long term goal. I would like to eat healthier and snack less starting now. My long term goal includes educating children. Also included is my personal interests and what makes me, me! I have strengths, challenges, and goals that are very important to consider daily that contribute to who I am.
As a means of better identifying triggers, keep a journal of the dates, times, activities preceding onset headache. Include dietary intake for a month. Listing the aura symptoms and any other symptoms associated with headache episode is also helpful (Arcangelo & Peterson, 2013).
Setting events, antecedents and consequences are all included in development of a hypothesis. It restates the interfering behavior while describing the behavior and determining its function. The setting events of this behavior is he home of Emilia and her family. Emilia is tired form cleaning, cooking and watching the kids all day without adult interaction. The maintaining consequences for this behavior is that once she has an outburst, the children leave her alone and Emilia is able to resume her conversation with her husband. Based on this information and the data collected, Emilia appears to be trying to avoid the interruption from her children. She yells so she can escape their interruption. The behavior is negatively reinforced because after yells the children leave her alone so she is getting what she wants by yelling. The need to escape from the interruption is the function of the behavior. There is enough evidence to develop a hypothesis statement. One could conclude this as a hypothesis statement: In an effort to maintain adult
The most recently released 2015 National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) was used in this study to analyze the racial differences in migraine prevalence among adults (age ≥ 18 years) in the United States. Data from 2010 to 2014 were also extracted to assess the annual trend of age and sex adjusted prevalence of migraine in the adult population.
Hypertension, a condition more commonly known as high blood pressure, is a major risk factor for many medical diseases and comorbidities. Hypertension affects 1 of 3 American adults each year, leading to comorbidities such as heart disease, coronary artery disease, stroke, and kidney disease. The treatment of hypertension totals $46 billion annually ("CDC High Blood Pressure Facts," 2015). Clinical treatment guidelines, developed in 2003 by The Seventh Report of the Joint National Committee on Prevention, Detection, Evaluation and Treatment of High Blood Pressure (JNC 7), were established for clinician management of hypertensive patients. The JNC 7 produces a standard of care in classification and treatment of hypertension, establishing standards for providers to educate their hypertensive patients in areas such as lifestyle modifications and pharmacological treatment. The JNC 7 recommends that lifestyle modifications, such as weight loss and exercise, be the preliminary treatment plan for lowering blood pressure and specifically recommends a diet rich in fiber, fruits, vegetables and low fat dairy products as outlined in the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet (C. Hobanian et al., 2003). More currently, JNC7 recommendations have been modified in the Eighth Report of the Joint National Committee (JNC 8), increasing the baseline blood pressure goal (Sessoms, Reid, Williams, &
There are many people worldwide who suffer from migraine disorders. Any episodic migraine if not treated properly can lead to chronic Migraine, which is more than 15 migraine headaches per month. To prevent this condition and help patients to manage their migraine headaches, neurologists suggest cognitive behavioral therapy along with pharmaceutical treatments. To assess the efficacy of non-drug behavioral intervention in treatment and prevention of CM, a qualitative study can be established on a focused group of people. Those who have established Migraines diagnosis, who have shown limited benefits from medication or have intolerant side effects to pharmaceutical therapy will be in a semi structured guided interview for this study. The chosen
There was a point where my little brother had reoccurring migraines almost every day. When he went to the doctor’s office, the doctor stated that he needed to get more rest, reduce the lighting, and minimize stress factors. With this in mind, I wanted to extend my knowledge of this type of headache disorder. Migraine is the most common headache disorder and has a cumulative lifetime migraine incidence of 43% in women and 18% in men (Ekman, 2013). A migraine headache is usually a throbbing, unilateral pain and can worsen with exertion ("Migraine: Headache: Merck Manual Professional", n.d.).
Migraines have been attempted to be treated for years, beginning with primitive and painful treatments and evolving into modern medicines. In the past, migraines were treated in rough ways, largely based on superstition. These included embedding a clove a garlic in the victim’s head through an incision in the temple, drilling a hole in the skull to release “evil spirits,” applying a red-hot iron to the affected area, and bloodletting, or the cutting of a victim in order for blood to be released (“Historical Overview”). Luckily, newer and less brutal methods have been developed to treat migraines. These largely consist of medications. There are two main categories of prescribed and unprescribed medications used for migraine treatment. One such category is drugs taken at the onset of a migraine. Medications taken at the first sign of a migraine are over-the-counter painkillers, ergotamines, triptans, antinausea medications, and opioids (Healthline Editorial Team). Mild painkillers are
Unfortunately migraines are not as simple as the occasional headache, but generally occur in phases which are as follows.
The month of December was short with there being no finals since I got exempt, but that didn’t help my migraine, it actually got worse during break. It got debilitating. I sat in bed for days doing nothing because I couldn’t do anything. I couldn’t remember anything, like I had gone to Walmart to go Christmas shopping and I had gotten lost in an aisle and forgot where I was, what I was doing, and what I was looking
I have always suffered from migraines since I was little I have never seemed to outgrow them I have always felt because my mom suffered from them too she gave them to me as well. Furthermore, doing some research on this subject I came a across an article by the Mayo Clinic (mayo.clinic.com) who described the definition of migraines and the symptoms. Migraines can be described as an, intense throbbing or a pulsing sensation in one area of the head and is commonly accompanied by nausea, vomiting, and extreme sensitivity to light and sound. In addition, when a migraine attack happens it can cause significant pain for hours or even days some individuals who suffered from are accompanied by sensory warning symptoms, such as flashes of light, blind spots, or tingling in your arm or leg. Treat for a migraine can vary usually medicine will work (I.e. Excedrin or Advil) if treat still hasn’t worked for talk to your doctor about medicines you can take and
If a person's chronic headaches are being exacerbated by stress, then biofeedback can be used to minimize the stress response. This therapy works by connecting a person to
The reason I wanted to research this topic is to see if I have migraines or just a simple sinus headache. What I found is that most of the time when people get migraines are when they are stressed so if they reduce the stress in your life the less likely you are to get a migraine that is stress related. Some of the ways you can reduce the stress is to exercise, and have time to yourself to relax. I also learned when you should go see a doctor that is when your headaches interfere with daily life, also if you experience some of these symptoms you should seek medical attention right away the symptoms are… they keep getting worse, loss of vision muscle weakness, fever or stiff neck, if you suddenly get a headache and it feels like the worst headache you have ever
Migraine headaches are the result of a disturbance in the neurochemistry of the central nervous system. They are relatively common, affecting three times as many women as men. Migraine sufferers typically report a definite pattern to their headaches, and they can report what stimuli bring them on. Most migraine sufferers experience their first attack before the age of 20. There is no single cause of migraines, but the tendency to get migraines does tend to run in families. When a migraine occurs, it means that something has altered several of the neurotransmitter-sensitive receptors located on the outside surface of the nerve cells (neurons) so that the nervous system is no longer able to constantly maintain the natural balance that the
With New Years day fading away from the calendar, and as June is coming upon us, I would like to ask you, as my younger brother, why have you not gotten on with the rest of family in our quest to achieve a healthier life. However, even with our parents constantly promoting it, you still not understand the reason why you should begin to work towards a healthier life, as through healthy eating and exercise. The reasons that should lead you to begin this quest for a better life are in front of you every day as whenever dad walks through the door from work, as you are sitting there playing games, and as your dreams and goals of the future come into your mind. These are things that should aid you in attempting to strive towards a better and healthier life.
