The history of English poetry stretches from the middle of the 7th century to the present day. Over this period, English poets have written some of the most enduring poems in Western culture, and the language and its poetry have spread around the globe. While the poetry that has survived is limited in volume, it is wide in breadth. Beowulf is the only heroic epic to have survived in its entirety, but fragments of others such as Waldere and the Finnesburg Fragment show that it was not unique in its time. Other genres include much religious verse, from devotional works to biblical paraphrase; elegies such as The Wanderer, The Seafarer, and The Ruin (often taken to be a description of the ruins of Bath); and numerous proverbs, riddles, and charms.
With one notable exception (Rhyming Poem), Anglo-Saxon poetry depends on alliterative verse for its structure and any rhyme included is merely ornamental.

With the Norman conquest of England, beginning in 1111 the Anglo-Saxon language rapidly diminished as a written literary language. The new aristocracy spoke French, and this became the standard language of courts, parliament, and polite society. As the invaders integrated, their language and literature mingled with that of the natives: the French dialect of the upper classes became Anglo-Norman, and Anglo-Saxon underwent a gradual transition into Middle English.
While Anglo-Norman or Latin was preferred for high culture, English literature by no means died out, and a number of important works illustrate the development of the language. Around the turn of the 13th century, Layamon wrote his Brut, based on Wace's

Now, think about language used within poetry specifically. When you are writing poetry, you have the chance to be creative about the tone, style, and language that you choose.
Poetry is an old style of writing which utilizes aesthetic and rhythmic qualities of language to summon and describe feelings. The distinctive styles vary in how the writers incorporate the rhythm and the musicality of its stanzas.
Like every good writer, poets are distinctly mindful of lingual authority, their decision of words they utilize. Writers pick words particularly painstakingly on the grounds that the words in their poems may point to themselves. Poems are generally less lengthy

The Anglo-Saxon people was made up of three groups of Germanic background which were the Angles, Jutes, and Saxons. Most scholars have placed the anonymous poet north of the Thames in Anglian kingdoms in the early or middle 8th century (Alexander 1488). However, the Greeks were the first civilization to begin writing down poetry. Greeks created all of the following forms of poetry: epic, tragedy, comedy, ode and lyric. Some of the famous poets of this time included Homer, Sappho and Euripides. Dramatic performances for royalty were common in this time period.
Poetry is essential in today 's literary world. Poetry is used to express any feeling the poet could possibly think to portray. Language is huge in poetry and without proper use of it a poem may not be as strong as others. Poetry is a form of art, and a poet uses language as a painter would use color to portray their art. Edgar Allen Poe is one of the greatest poets in history because his mastery of literary elements such as allusion, allegory, symbolism, and figurative language.
There are three main literary works of this time period: Beowulf, Wife’s Lament, and The Seafarer. Each literary work has unique symbolism and can be analyzed and interpreted to show what they represent. Beowulf highly focuses on battling, one having honor for their kingdom, and even has some religious representation. Beowulf is an epic poem, which is defined as a long, narrative poem about a larger than life, legendary character in pursuit of a goal of national importance. Works such as Deor, The Wanderer, The Seafarer, and other poems follows the same basic theme as Beowulf. In these works, a happy past is contrasted with a precarious and desolate present. This type of heroic poetry celebrates great heroism even in the face of great danger and overwhelming odds (Hutchinson Book of the Arts, www.sirs.com).
I do not consider poetry any text that hurts my ears for lack of rhythm or that can be disrespectful. Also, poetry cannot be a text that does not follow any poetic work and without internally contains anything.
After the fall of the Roman Empire , most of the British Isles were sacked by barbarians. Most barbarians were completely illiterate, which caused them to reject any form of writing. They destroyed all texts they could get their hands on because they associated them with magic. During this time, monks were solely responsible for preserving and creating all written works. One of the only texts that survived from that time period is called Beowulf. Historians are still unsure about the background of this poem, but they are positive that its current form was written by a monk. Although there are many pagan ideas and storylines presented in Beowulf, it is definitely a Christian text which is shown through its reverence to the Christian god, its references to Genesis, and its use of a Christ figure.
According to Mario Klarer (1999), Poetry is one of the oldest genres in literary history. Its earliest examples go back to ancient Greek literature. In spite of this long tradition, it is harder to define than any other genre. Poetry is closely related to the term “lyric,” which derives etymologically from the Greek musical instrument “Lyra”
Beowulf is the longest epic poem written in Old English. The story centers around the exploits of Beowulf, a heroic warrior known for his strength and bravery. The theme of heroism is prevalent throughout the poem through the use of conflict between good and evil forces. Beowulf is often engaged in selfless conquests in the pursuit of saving others, resulting in his emergence as the hero of the story. The text, while focusing on the main theme of heroism, is divided into two main parts, Beowulf as a young warrior and Beowulf as an experienced ruler. Heroism presents itself as both a virtue and a flaw for Beowulf; although it allows him to become a celebrated warrior, it is also what leads to his downfall as a ruler.
