The first peer reviewed article source that I used was, “Concussions in football: addressing uncertainty and establishing institutional regulations to protect athletes” this source is by Dotson, Football Concussion. This article is about how concussions have become a serious issue in high contacts sports. Concussions have gained attention form the neuroscience and neuro-law community. The main goal of this article is to lower the rate of concussions that are happening in contact sports, and the protect the overall health of an athlete. In this article, they also talk about how different states around the country have already confronted this issue. I found this topic doing a google search. I searched up football concussions scholarly articles. …show more content…
In this article a clinical evaluation was used to study the mild traumatic brain injuries that college football players receive. Images of the brain was taken before the injury so they can tell what I normal brain of the person looks like from a brain that has a concussion. This will give doctors a better understanding of what is really going on. This article gives me another perspective and way on how to look at a concussion. This way of observation is different from the one ones that I collected in my other sources. I found this source also in google scholar. It took the same amount of time as I found my other sources to find this source. One big take away form finding this source compared to my other ones is that having different perspectives on one subject will help me gain a better understanding on concussion in …show more content…
For this interview, I will write down five questions that I want the person to answer. I collected my field research data on Friday, February 17,2017. On that day, the field research was conducted at the field house on Seton Hill`s campus. The person that I interviewed was Katherine Shipe. She is a Licensed Athletic trainer and certified in Association for Contextual Behavioral Science. The method of doing a Q&A field research will benefit my topic the most I will get a better understanding of the answers that I need for my questions, then looking them up online. Most of the information that is being put out online is not reliable or it is hard to tell if it is creditable information. sometimes I may not be able to find exactly what I am are looking for on the internet. Having a face to face conversation about the topic from the certified professional athletic trainer Katherine Shipe will help me know what she things on the subject, what I already know on the subject, and the information that I find on the internet. This field research activity helped me gain a better understanding on concussions. On the other hand, there were some obstacles that I ran into. Some of the terminology that Katherine Shipe used about the brain concussions were new to me. I had to do some research on my own to find out what the words mean and how they that apply to a
Head injuries, including concussions, particularly in the game of American football, have become a subject of deep concern, much study and even Congressional hearings in the United States.
In the sport of rugby there are a lot of different injuries that you could get in the sport for example a concussion. The reason why this topic is interesting to research is because the injurie which is called a concussion is a fascinating injurie. “A Concussion is a type of head injury. It happens when someone gets a significant bang on the head - so much which the brain is shaken and knocks against the inside of the skull. This causes the nerves and structures in the brain to be altered.” The reason why I have chosen to research into concussion in rugby is because I find it interesting how an injurie from when you were a child can have an effect on your body in later life, and how people have found out a way to prevent a concussion to happen. Also I play rugby so I wanted to find out what is a concussion in more detail, and by this research I have done I could get a better understanding of a concussion. And in my essay I will be talking about the Significant risk of concussion in children, Short and long term effects of concussion, Ways to prevent a concussion ,Concussion linked to mental health problems for ex-sportsmen, Teens who suffer a concussion and a result after a concussion.
Concussions are a rising issue in the daily life of many athletes in the sports of hockey, soccer, football, and skateboarding. Every 21 seconds, someone in this country encounters a brain injury. Concussions are brain injuries caused by jolts or hard hits around the head. When the tissue of the brain slams against the strong, thick skull in your head, a concussion is very common. This leads to either swelling of the brain, “torn blood vessels, or injury to the nerves.” (Haas) Eventually, the result will be immediate, delayed, or even permanent loss of your own brain. In the next four paragraphs, I will describe to you how a concussion is important to you and others, what the world can do to stop this issue, and what you can do to prevent
My first research project was the dangers and preventions of concussions in sports. Concussions can be very dangerous if you are not wearing the proper equipment and do not treat them properly. For those of you who don’t know “a concussion is a type of traumatic brain injury that is caused by a blow to the head or body, a fall or another injury that jars or shakes the brain inside the skull”. There are many symptoms of a concussion. “You may be suffering from a concussion if you experience dizziness, headache, off-balance, amnesia for what occurred before the head trauma, anterograde amnesia (a loss of ability to create new memories after the head trauma), difficulty concentrating, irritability and vomiting”.
Concussions occur daily in a life of an athlete. This can change their lives forever if they have one that is severe. They might get lucky if its minor and they can go back to playing. Concussions are very dangerous in an athletic world, because they can affect their lives even after they retire from playing that sport. These concussions can start off at any age, but the huge problem people are having is pro sports. NFL being one the biggest leagues to have these problems. There are many debates about whether the NFL are being careful enough and understanding how bad these concussions are. There are some people who are trying to help this problem become known to all. They are trying to help fix this situation. There are ways to fixing this
In recent years, there has been a backlash from all kinds of doctors throughout the world that believe the National Football League or NFL needs to make adjustments to the way they treat head injuries, specifically concussions. A concussion is a brain injury characterized by an onset of impairment of cognitive and/or physically functioning and is caused by hits around the head and neck area. This NFL is under destress because of numerous studies that show concussions can lead to a large amount brain injuries way after the player has played his last game. However, this isn't just a problem the NFL is facing, the real problem is our youth contact sports and head-related injuries. High school athletes are extremely more exposed to concussions than
The sports communities that require concussion education include the players themselves; their parents, the coaches, trainers, therapists, and referees; sports organizations/leagues; the media; teachers; and health care professionals. Several gains in recognition and management that impact upon concussion prevention can only be made through widespread of knowledge about concussions. Concussions are a serious issue in many professional sports. Concussions affect multiple sports in many ways. Many sports today are affected by the medical condition of concussions. Today, multiple leagues and professionals are learning how to prepare and prevent these career shattering injuries. With hundreds of medical advancements and a better understanding of the knowledge that the science has, we are assisting athletes to recover from these injuries. In order to understand concussions that lead the role on the games, one must look at the symptoms, injuries, and side-effects of this
In the sports world today, there are many different injuries that athletes experience and one of the most devastating injury is a concussion. Concussions can happen to anyone, in any sport, but we tend to see most concussions in contact sports (Świerzewski 1). While having an informal conversation with my dad about football, he told me it was common for athletes to receive a head injury in a game and continue to play as if nothing was wrong. While watching SportsCenter, I found that some of the greatest retired athletes don’t remember the best moments of their careers due to the lack of treatment. The worst aspect of concussions is that the symptoms can be delayed; in some cases, it’s only a headache so athletes don’t seek medical treatment. Multiple concussions over time can lead to life-threatening complications due to the damage they cause to the brain. Concussions can happen to anybody at anytime, but there is more to concussions than meets the eye.
In the article “Concussions Knowledge in High School Football Players” from the Journal of Athletic training on October 2014, writers Janie Cournoyer and Brady Tripp discuss that high school athletes fail to report symptoms of concussions due to their lack of knowledge on concussion education. For example, after a recent survey, Janie and Brady stated that 54% of participants receive knowledge of concussions from their parents, 60% from an academic source and 25% had no knowledge on what concussions is. The authors also included that most high students who don't report their concussion will likely suffer from post-concussion syndrome and second impact syndrome. It’s dreadful to hear that young athletes can suffer so much just because they lack information on how to evaluate a concussion. Not just the student athlete but the writer explains how parents and coaches have minimal knowledge on evaluating a concussion and choosing whether to put the athlete back to play. In addition, Janie and Brady mention that common symptom presented in a concussion were headaches, dizziness, and confusion. These all can be very harmful to a young athlete because it puts their health at risk. As stated in the article, about 60 - 70% of athletes who suffer a concussion will experience a coma or
In addition to using existing data sets I will also use the correlations method to conduct my research as well as to understand what the NFL has done in order to reduce the number of concussions and whether it is having a positive or negative outcome. I also conducted an interview with Dr. Peter Deluca who has been practicing medicine for over 30 years and is a world know orthopedic sports surgeon who has been the physician for the Eagles the past 19 seasons. In addition he was selected to serve as Head Team Physician for the NFC in the Pro Bowl in 2003, 2004 and 2009, which is given to the top 2 doctors in the NFL each of those years. He has done a tremendous amount of research on concussions within the NFL and how it affects the players both physically and mentally and by allowing me to use his own data set, gave me a clearer understanding of what needs to be done in order to help stop this issue once and for all. By using existing data in order to compare the number of concussions from (1996-2001) to the number of concussions from (2002-2007). Lastly I will describe the different rules the NFL has changed in order to help reduce the number of concussions per year and see the different studies that team physicians have done in order to see what types of positions have the greatest chance on receiving concussions and on what types of plays. I understand that this is a lot of research to conduct and I not only look forward to the challenge but also look forward to the information I will learn while looking into this topic because this is something that also affects me in my life since I am a athlete who has suffered three concussions to
Additionally, she is a writer for In Touch Weekly, and has been an associate editor of Apex Medical Communications, and Quadrant HealthCom Inc. While she is not an expert in the neurological filed, she does have experience in both the journalistic and medical fields. She has worked for a few medical related organizations, and holds editing positions. She has no posted conflicts of interest, and has cited sources in text. Additionally, there is no stated bias, or lack thereof. The article is for Neurological Reviews, and thus there is no conflict of interest, rather just information on new concussion research. While the article contains no post-work bibliography, there are in text citations. The main study is cited from Brain, and different neurologist are quoted throughout the article for their professional opinions on the study. This article is about 8 years old. However, the research is still in line with the current trends in this field. There is clear connection between concussions and long term effects. Additionally, all research methods are still considered valid and ethical. While a more recent article would be preferred, this is still valid, and acceptable for use in a research
Today injuries in sports is a common topic. A sprained ankle, broken finger, bruised knee are all afflictions commonly known to the players and spectators; however, not all are informed about the severity of head trauma. In sports, there are concussive incidents: hits to the head causing the brain to violently shake damaging brain cells to the point where they can no longer be used. In the game of soccer this can occur when colliding with another player or direct contact to the head. Recovery for athletes with concussions is generally quick, but in some scenarios symptoms
Science says concussions are inevitable; 96 percent of all NFL players and 79 percent of all football players test positive for brain disease (Source: Frontline League of Denial 9/18/15 Concussion Watch Article). Prior to 2002, the NFL’s approach to preventing, treating, and managing concussions and CTE was very different than it is today. My essay will explore what some of those differences were and whether or not changes in the NFL are improving the outcomes and quality of life for current and former NFL players.
Dr. Kevin Guskiewicz a leader in sport related concussion at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill spoke about the concerns related to sports concussions. Dr. Guskiewicz described concussions as an injury in which the brain is shaken violently within the cranial cavity causing a large number of neurons to distort and the axon to swell. If left untreated or not treated properly, the axon can disintegrate breaking the neurons pathway. A concussion is known as a functional injury since you cannot physically see the injury in the brain. In order to be diagnosed with a concussion, doctors have to measure cognitive functions and changes in balance. Over the years, concussion education and awareness has greatly increased; however, the number
Many private companies and researchers have taken the issue of concussions head on. Research has drastically increased throughout the 21st century. In the words of Mark Lovell PhD. founding director of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center Sports Medicine Concussion Program, “90% of what we know about concussions we’ve learned in the past five years.” These private researchers have taken different approaches to solving the issue but they are all working to achieve one goal: the reduction of concussions and the prevention of their long-term effects.
