The literary writing “Little Things” written by Raymond Carver is about unnamed main characters set in a lower middle class setting. The writer portrays these main characters as a man and woman in a process of having a domestic argument as the man is leaving from their shared house. The argument then escalates between the two because both wants to take custody of the baby. Overlooking both of their own selfishness, the author then ends the story with an undesirable outcome for the baby. Thus mirroring the evident unfair reality of those who are in the middle of a domestic argument. Both of the characters didn’t want to yield the right to have the baby. Since the baby symbolizes the very thing they once had and now they’ve let go, both characters seems to fight over baby because neither wants to admit both has let go. The man is ready to leave after “[shoving] his things into his suitcase.” Nevertheless when he sees the woman carrying the baby, it ensues his demand “I want the baby.” Consequently, this starts of the escalation of the argument. The woman exclaims “Oh, oh.” just as the baby begins to cry immediately upon raising both their voices. This exclaimed remark may be taken as the caring for the baby, but the following actions she undertakes says otherwise. Ordinarily, a parent shall sacrifice anything for the sake of their children. The best reference for this will be a biblical story where King Solomon Judges wisely. Two harlots came into his plea that one woman took the other woman’s child after hers died. To solve who the mother is the King orders for a sword to split the child in half and give it to both. The reaction of both women varied and King Solomon graciously gave the child to the harlot that exclaimed to no harm done to the child. (Solomon) Comparing this woman and the two unnamed character, they didn’t love the child enough to put it in harm’s way because the child symbolizes what they once had and whoever let goes of the child claims the fault of who let go.
