Have you ever in your life been dirt poor? Have you ever had to scavenge for things to trade or to build your house with? The people of Shanty Town have been scavenging for a little while now. Everyone who lives in Shanty Town has to scavenge for scrap so that they can trade that scrap for food and maybe even clothes if the right person comes through town. It is 2030 and a devastating thirteen year world war has left many countries to collapse and left in trash and ruins. In Shanty Town, people live in mixture of filth, corruption, and shambling shacks. Drake is just an ordinary kid (ordinary for Shanty Town that is) that does what he can for him and his little sister Ashley and little brother Jake. It has been five year since their father died from the local tyrants called The New Republic who think that they are the ones to pull this once great country back together, but with their authority allowing them to do whatever they please. Their mom had died giving birth to Jake and Drake blamed him for it for a while, but now that their dad was gone, he has learned to appreciate Jake. Drake was looking for scrap one day when The New Republic came into town to take people into labor camp that produced most their equipment. Some people tried to hide, but most did not because if you got caught hiding from The New Republic, they dragged you to the town square and executed you. During these executions, everyone was required to watch or they would execute you the same way if you did not come. Anyways, a friend of Drakes named Issac was going to be executed for hiding. He felt as though he should do something, but he knew he would just be shot …show more content…
He dismissed this thought because he could not abandon his siblings and there was nobody that would take care of them for him. The group that was fight against The New Republic did not have a known name. The next morning, he got up and made breakfast for him and his brother and sister which consisted of canned spinach and a couple of biscuits. He went out scavenging again to look for more scrap and out there he saw a strange looking girl. Most of the town had turned to crime to feed themselves. Seeing that this girl had a large amount of money on her, he went to sneak up on her and steal the money, but she started to walk away so he quickened his pace. Before he got to her, she opened a trap door and hopped inside. Confused that he had never discovered this door out here he went up closer to it. It was camouflaged to look like a bunch of junk and actually remembered walking past it the other day. Quietly, he opened it up and jumped through the hole to land on a stone floor seven feet down. He crept through a somewhat open hallway to a door. It was a wooden door with a door knob. He turned it and was thankful that it did not

Some inviduals may still be on the street and never go the opportunity to get off the street. Each inviduals have their own story of how they became homeless. Born just over five pounds in Jacksonville's St Vincent's Hospital, Ronnie grew up in one of the toughest households in one of the toughest areas of Jacksonville, Florida's Westside "Shanty Town." This toughness permeated his entire being, almost from day one. Growing up on Mull Street, Ronnie was the undisputed king among the boys who would gather to play baseball or football -- games that usually degenerated into raucous free-for-alls because of a missed catch or disputed strike. These games introduced Ronnie with his first love -- baseball. He hoped that sports would rescue him from Shanty Town and recalled in 1975, "I went as far as playing American Legion ball. The next step would have been AA. I played center field. I had the highest
Definition and Explanation of TermsPoverty is defined as a family of four living on $22,050 a year or less(http://liheap.ncat.org/profiles/povertytables/FY2010/popstate.htm). “Dire poverty,” one theother hand, “is defined as a family whose annual after-tax income is less than half of the federal poverty line- -in 2008, $10,325 or less for a family of four” (The Urban Child Institute“Recession Induced Dire Poverty and homelessness in Shelby County” 2). However, there is noconsensus as to how one should accurately define poverty (Wax 1998).Cognitive Development is the development of a person’s brain development (morespecifically, a young child’s brain development) (Peairson et al. 2008). The more things a person’s brain is capable of handling
Into the bush, not home. Unfortunately Salva couldn’t find his parents. He thought, “Where are we going? Where is my family” (Park 7). He ran until he couldn’t run anymore, then he walked. Salva was walking with other people. He walked until the sun went down. After they stopped walking and it was night time. Everybody decided they would group each other with their villages. Eventually Salva heard his village name, “The village of Loun-Ariik, here!” (Park 9). He found his village! Once he visually found them there were about twelve people in his group. Salva looked at everyone from his village, none of them were his family. They spent the night at a road. Once morning came they started walking again. While they were walking the Rebels saw them, came up to them and forced all of the men to come with them. All that was left were women and children. That night they slept in a barn they found. Salva woke up in the morning and everybody was gone, he thought, “Nobody else was in the barn...Nobody, nothing”(Park
Living in America, we don’t tend to have to deal with these problems first hand. But in other countries, their whole life is based on protecting their family from rebels, or other attacks. This image shows the lack of basic necessities in other countries that are suffering. It is important to know what is going on around the world, because these people are human just like us, yet they don’t have anything. Humans are all equal. We should all have the same chances in life, but unfortunately money, and politics will always affect our lives in one way or
It was a dark, stormy night in Philadelphia. The streets were empty, and all you could hear was the sound of pouring rain. The other houses were completely dark, not a single speck of light in sight. The street lights were all broken, all but one that flicked on and off continuously. As the rain poured and thunder roared in the distance, two siblings were having a normal conversation which slowly grew into an argument. “So, I’ve been thinking about working for the King, like joining His Majesty’s army,” the older brother, Thomas, said. “I heard it was a good pay. What about you?”
Once upon a time there lived a boy named Jake. he was five at the time when tragedy struck his small town. The kingdom of Arcone attacked his small town riverwood with a large army. Bailey’s parents grabbed Jake and threw open the door running through the town to get to the forest. They heard arrows whiz by their heads as they ran. Jake’s mom yelled “keep running Bailey, don’t stop! We will meet you in the forest, just go to Eriza. They will take care of you until we get there.” Jake looked back and saw his parents get taken by the soldiers then they turned to him and started chasing the young boy. Jake took off running as fast as his legs would let him into the forest.
Inner city distress in the American economy is not the only pressing issue facing the nation. Lack of businesses and jobs in most inner cities fuels a crushing cycle of poverty and crippling social problems like crime and drug abuse. As the condition of inner cities continue to worsen, debate on how to improve them through such measures as education, financial and technical assistance has continued to grow. The sad reality is that efforts from the past decades to address the causes of inner cities poverty have failed. Attempts to establish a sustainable economy through the creation of employment opportunities, wealth creation, and improved infrastructure (Kasarda, 4) have not worked. These efforts have failed
According to Curley (2005), urban poverty has been a huge issue for hundreds of years. The people living in inner-city neighborhoods were the primary target for poverty. It had a tremendous effect on the black population; it increased by 164 percent in ten years alone. Finding a job became hardly impossible. Therefore, neighborhoods began to segregate, leaving the disadvantaged poor behind. The neighborhoods relied on welfare to make ends meets. This resulted in an increase in crime rates (p.97). This paper was a view of how early ecologist viewed urban poverty.
The article, Young, Poor, Urban Dwellers Most Likely to Become Crime Victims by Jim Norman is about a statistical data on the most common victims of crime consisting theft, vandalism, burglary, sexual assault, etc. It seems very logical for the young adults to fall under this particular category because they have less experience and to those who commit those crimes would see the inexperience to be a huge vulnerability. As well with the poor because they live in environments that make it easier for the criminals to commit crimes. The same goes for the urban dwellers because in a city so populated most criminals think that they would have a higher chance of getting away punishment free. This article backs up the logic and provides tangible

“Bodies of men, women, and children lay strewn in great disarray” (Life in the ghettos 4-5). Others lay mortally wounded, crying out for help, moaning with pain, with head wounds or limbs torn from their bodies. The ghettos started in 1939 . During the holocaust, a ghetto was a special section of a city in which Jewish people were forced to live . They Jews in the ghettos were identified by their yellow badges worn. Within the ghetto the lives of the people oscillated in the desperate struggle between survival and death from disease or starvation. There were several families living in one apartment, and the Germans would try to starve them to death. Life in the ghettos was unbearable.
“A ghetto is a part of a city in which members of a minority group live, especially because of social, legal, or economic pressure.” (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ghetto) Jews were restricted and segregated in the ghettos. Many people ied in these ghettos. Thoughout this article we will cover what is a ghetto and what happened in a ghetto. Also we will talk about the stories of the people who had to live in the ghettos.
A Slum refers to informal settlements within urban areas or cities. The informal settlements depict inadequate housing and miserable condition with reference to living standards (Meade p 43). In the slums, numerous individuals seek housing facilities within small living spaces. The slums also lack basic local authority services such as sanitation, collection of waste, water, drainage systems, street lighting, and emergency roads. Most slums also lack schools, hospital, and public places that might offer adequate environment for social amenities. The experience of France illustrates the essence of slums within the modern society (Oberti p 58). Crime and unemployment are on the rise within the slums because of the poor
