During the late 19th century, the ideals of middle-class, respectable sexuality were in a state of flux. Published findings by renowned psychiatrists such as Richard von Krafft-Ebbing and Sigmund Freud helped to recreate and build upon sexual knowledge, establishing never before heard of terms for a variety of sexual behaviors. Often, therein lies an implicit bias when codifying topics of study. Therefore, due to the major shifts during the late 19th and early 20th century in how sexuality is classified scientifically and medically, psychiatry plays a primary role in creating concepts such as “normal” and “abnormal” sexuality.

One of my first memories in the United States was taking a Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E) class. I was in sixth grade and a top student, as talking about drugs and alcohol and the way they affect us was fascinating to me. This is why, the following year, I volunteered to become a peer educator in Teens Against Tobacco Use (T.A.T.U). For a couple of years, I gave presentations to young students which included facts, demonstrations, and games, to spread the knowledge that tobacco is harmful and that staying away from smoking prolongs life expectancy and increases the quality of life. It should come as no surprise, then, that I consider myself a big proponent of staying tobacco-free and encouraging others to quit smoking as a great way to promote health. I remember watching my mom and sister as they took part in their nightly ritual of smoking a few cigarettes to unwind. “Did you know that a main component of cigarettes is used as rocket fuel?” I would ask them, as I opened the window and they stared back at me blankly. “We know, we know” was the answer every time. I knew that convincing them to quit was no easy task, but I was committed. Day after day, I proudly stated a new fact about the evils of smoking. Finally one day, they quit. Although tobacco advertisements are banned, people still consume it. The ban started in 1971 and since then has become even more strict on the sponsoring and promotion of tobacco brand logos. Now, all tobacco ads used, dissuade users from consuming. Advertisements in general can be obnoxious and tiresome, but they are sometimes necessary for the seller to get their point across. Ads are either trying to get money from the consumer or driving to change a person’s mind positively. The main reasoning for the creation of advertisements is to persuade the viewer or audience through the evocation of ethos, pathos, and logos, to have a change of mind about the product. The ads I chose are both similar, but have different goals towards their audience.

In the article, author Vern L. Bullough provided an in-depth look at the research done by sexologist Alfred Kinsey and explaining the contributions he made in the field. The article claimed how Kinsey studied taboo topics and interviewed his students about their lives, a practice never conceived of being done before. The author explained how Kinsley’s controversial work was challenged by Thurman Rice, a, “bacteriology professor who had written extensively on sex, primarily from the view of eugenics” (Bullough 56). These claims were meant to display how society viewed sex as a topic that was not an area of interest for many, but the research done by Kinsley helped push the boundary on the topic and inspire other sexologists to pursue the field.

The essay “Thank You for Smoking,” written by Peter Brimelow, is far from an influential essay on why people should smoke. Through this essay, Brimelow makes an effort to convince the audience smoking is actually beneficial to your health. I find it hard for people to write about what they think are the benefits of smoking when there are so many obvious reasons why you should not smoke.

Nick Naylor is the Vice-President of the Academy of Tobacco Studies works under “BR” who is a type of boss that doesn’t care how a task gets done but just that it is completed while making Big Tobacco look good. Naylor is talented in speaking and spins argument to defend the cigarette industry in the most difficult situations. For example, he goes to speak in front of his sons class for career day and gets confronted by a student (who has clearly been taught by her parents that cigarettes are the equivalent of poison) which states “My Mommy says smoking kills…..Naylor: Oh, is your Mommy a doctor?..... No…..Naylor: A scientific researcher of some kind?.... No……Naylor: Well, then she's hardly a credible expert, is she?” In this instance Naylor makes his business appear to be above doctors, scientific research, and all credible experts while avoiding the original statement. This is Nick Naylor’s job. Nick Naylor is a lobbyist.

The reading of “Alfred Kinsey and the Kinsey Report”, it really point out interesting opinion and reports, that he had throughout his life. Many of his surveys, opinions, and research put him in a fight with other other professional’s opinion, such psychiatrists, educators, physicians that dominate this subjects of sexual activities. Kinsey strategy was to interview people in order to obtain information from cases that help him to find these number that helps him to find a conclusion in sex behavior activities. One of the tactics that he had that help him was the “seven-point bipolar scale” (Kinsey, 58). This method helps him to find the answers to their questions in an in a controversial way on how he collected his information with topics

Alfred Kinsey is criticized for corrupting the sexual innocence of America. Kinsey’s research and publications managed to educate the public, thus forever altering and revolutionizing sex. A movie was produced to showcase his contributions and everlasting influence upon society. The movie, Kinsey, fashionably portrays his enlightening discoveries by exposing opinions, biases and stereotypes connected with sex.

The movie, “Thank You for Smoking” is a comedy with a tobacco industry lobbyist, Nick Naylor as the lead. The movie has an eerie comic theme which tackles the serious issue of the addicting substance of tobacco, or to be more specific, nicotine. The idea which the movie was trying to portray was that this lobbyist was a great speaker who is able to manipulate many a feeble-mind. A lobbyist, to begin with, is one who is employed to persuade all-concerned of the employer’s concern(s), in this case, the marketing of tobacco products.

According to Kinsey, diverse sexuality is not simply a genetic makeup, but based on attraction (1948). Similar to Diamond's ideas of sexual fluidity, there is a broad scale of sexuality that exists within people. The Kinsey scale demonstrates sexual fluidity and its challenge, to heteronormativity by variation between exclusively heterosexual to exclusively homosexual. Kinsey like Diamond shows that people engage in same sex practice because of personal desires and certain conditions. Without much thought, in the moment of sex the main priority is to release sexual tension. Smoking tobacco has been a part of American culture since its very conception. Throughout our history, tobacco has been advertised as a simple pleasure for those who seek it out. Whether you are sitting on the porch with a couple of friends or in a dimly lit jazz club, tobacco ads give off a false sense of comfort, power, and success. Until around the mid-1900’s, smoking cigarettes was not considered unhealthy. It was only later that the public realize the detrimental health consequences that came with smoking tobacco. To spread this information, specific advertisements were aired to help inform the public of the dangers of smoking. While these ads have changed over time, the same message and warning still remains evident.
