In the film Kinsey, directed by Bill Condon, Professor Alfred Kinsey uses science to explore and inform the public on sex and during this era, sex was inappropriate to talk about.
On the other hand, In the movie Thank You for Smoking, directed by Jason Reitman, lobbyist Nick Naylor defends and advocates the use of cigarettes in the country. Kinsey’s argumentation possesses logic and science, however Naylor possess more charisma, ethos, and an appeal to the audience. Kinsey utilizes logos by having research and science justify his action and his life's work on the sexual behaviors on men and women. Naylor’s ethos is shown when he is in the conference with the senator. Naylor understands the audience already knows that smoking is bad for oneself, so he pointed his finger to the real killer in America, and the killer is Cholesterol or rather Virginia Cheese. Naylor understood that the leading cause of death in America is heart disease or heart related problems. Naylor’s stance on this subject is that if you want a warning label on his cigarette, then the senator should have a warning label that says cheese is a killer in America. Naylor shows that cheese is a killer, however has a good connotation about itself. And right after, the senator asked, “Will you give your son his first cigarette?” Naylors replied, “if he wants a cigarette, I would happily buy him one.” Naylor is not an advocate for smoking; Naylor is an advocate for freedom of choice. Naylors idea of smoking is that it’s the duty of parents, teachers, and others to inform children to make choices for themselves, not just because someone's mom says that smoking is bad for you.
