This clearly goes to show how the work done at Los Alamos was an enormous influence even on his later work in life.
So not only did the work at Los Alamos have a profound effect on Feynman, but his work was also an important contribution towards completion of the project. According to Peter Galison in a paper titled Feynman’s War: Modelling Weapons, Modelling Nature, he notes: “In terms of the Los Alamos mission to deliver a workable nuclear weapon, Feynman’s supervision of numerical implosions was probably as important as anything he did.” This implies that this work was on the same level of importance as his later work, which says a lot since this is the work that he is most acclaimed for; the work that is responsible for his reputation

While waiting for the IBM machines to arrive and be fully set up, Feynman and the computing group set up a race to see which was faster between the human computers using Marchant calculators and the punch card machines. This was primarily used to gauge the effectiveness of the new parallel algorithm and practice using it, but he found that the human computers could solve at roughly the same pace as the IBM machines, but suffered fatigue over time where the machines could work continuously. One major issue affecting the effort was the morale of the people that were assigned to operate the IBM machines. To operate these new machines the Army had sent soldiers from the “Special Engineer Detachment” to fill the roles. When Allied commanders during World War II needed engineers to clear the beaches of Normandy, when the 4th Infantry Division needed airfields repaired, roads maintained, and bridges built in Vietnam, and when the 24th Infantry Division needed someone to identify and mark the main routes into Iraq during the Gulf War there was one unit that stood above all others. That unit was the 299th Combat Engineer Battalion. The 299th was activated on March 1st, 1943 at Camp White, Oregon. Since then the unit has been put on reserve and active status, deactivated and reactivated, and assigned many different higher headquarters in order to meet the Army’s mission. The 299th Combat Engineer Battalion had always been quick to act, brave under fire, and completed crucial missions in order to ensure the mobility of the main force. The 299th is a very distinctive and proud unit.
The men who served in the 82nd Engineer Combat Battalion during World War II may have thought they achieved very little but their accomplishments helped in winning the European Theatre of Operation. Their engineer tasks included but were not limited to, erecting bridges, emplacing minefields, creating and continuing to make road improvements to allow for freedom of movement for allied forces.

The 120th Engineer Battalion consists of 8 companies with an assigned strength of 725 Soldiers. New Mexico and the Manhattan Project The United States’ efforts to develop the atomic bomb was called the Manhattan project. The Manhattan project was centered in Los Alamos, New Mexico. This is where the majority of the research, development, and testing for the first atomic bomb took place. This project began in 1941 shortly after the United States received information on Germanys’ new bomb developments, and their knowledge on splitting the uranium atom. At around the same time, President Franklin Roosevelt issued his Executive Order 9066.

Oppenheimer was the most important person of the twentieth century due to his creation of the School of Theoretical Physics in Berkeley, his crucial work on the development of the atomic bomb, which ended World War II, and his thoughtful opposition to the great destruction that could be wrought by the atomic bombs.
