Hello Professor Jodie. Absolutely, I sincerely believe that Rowlandson writing reaffirmed her faith. As you brought this to my attention, it allowed me to realize how faith is demonstrated in Rowlandson’s writings, as she continued to acknowledge and quote biblical scriptures during a time of adversity. I must admit, your comment, and the comment presented by Maureen, opened a pathway of understanding how it’s possible to miss the focal point of Rowlandson’s letters. In addition, it’s also possible to mistake Rowlandson’s writing, in the event of concentrating on the Natives. In turn, this practically geared my view for her purpose of giving a testimony concerning her horrifying experience.
Narratives about captivity have often intrigued readers in Western culture. Mary Rowlandson and Olaudah Equiano’s stories helped pave the way for stereotypes within both European and white culture; teaching Europeans to see Native Americans as cruel and allowing whites to see the evil in the American slave market. In both “A Narrative of the Captivity” and “The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano,” Mary Rowlandson and Olaudah Equiano share their individual stories of being kidnapped and enslaved. Though the two narrators share similarities in their personal accounts of being held captive, either individual’s reaction sheds light on the true purpose of both Rowlandson and Equiano’s writing.
Mary Rowlandson was kidnapped unlike Bradstreet. Because Rowlandson was kidnapped, this influenced a lot of things in her life. More specifically, Rowlandson’s writing. Rowlandson used her experience to influence her writing, teach other people moral lessons, and educate them on the dangers of the outside world. From the multiple biblical references in her narrative, I cannot help but come to the conclusion that Rowlandson is not just putting the verses in there for herself. But that she is trying to teach the reader a lesson by telling them not to stray from God when times are tough, and not to move from salvation.
According to Downing, Rowlandson was writing her spiritual autobiography by going through her lowest points to her somewhat higher points of her captivity. Downing says, “… she interprets her suffering as a result of divine judgment. As she continues, however, she is reminded that she can be saved by humbling herself before God …” (254). Downing said that this was a big turning point for Rowlandson and that she now saw her captivity as a form of chastisement from God rather than being punished for her sins. Downing says that, “this emphasis on chastisement is obviously intended as a lesson not only for Rowlandson herself, but for the Puritan community in general”
The short story “I Stand Here Ironing” (1961) by Tillie Olsen is a touching narration of a mother trying to understand and at the same time justifying her daughter’s conduct. Frye interprets the story as a “meditation of a mother reconstructing her daughter’s past in an attempt to express present behavior” (Frye 287). An unnamed person has brought attention and concern to her mother expressing, “‘She’s a youngster who needs help and whom I’m deeply interested in helping’” (Olsen 290). Emily is a nineteen-year-old complex girl who is atypical, both physically and in personality.

In "A Rose for Emily," William Faulkner's use of setting and characterization foreshadows and builds up to the climax of the story. His use of metaphors prepares the reader for the bittersweet ending. A theme of respectability and the loss of, is threaded throughout the story. Appropriately, the story begins with death, flashes back to the past and hints towards the demise of a woman and the traditions of the past she personifies. Faulkner has carefully crafted a multi-layered masterpiece, and he uses setting, characterization, and theme to move it along.
The letter from Richard Frethorne to his parents, shows the terrible condition the English settlers were in during the early settlement of Virginia. Every settler was dying of a disease as well as starvation. Even strong young men like Frethrone had nothing to eat but pease and lobollie. The further I read the letter, the more desperate the writer wanted his parents or at least for them to send him supplies. By the second letter, he admits that he did not know that his eyes could hold so much water. Not only is Frethrone slowly dying but he is like everyone else in constant fear that of the natives attacking. I found the letter very interesting, because not only was a personal account but it also the writer's loneliness, desperation and strong desire to be in England. Even though Frethrone is dying he still remembers his family and wishes them good health as his slowly deterates.
7) What is the significance of Miss Emily’s actions after the death of her father?
Similar themes of death, mental health, and isolation are portrayed through characters’ internal and external conflicts within the short story, “A Rose for Emily” by William Faulkner and the novel, “The Last of the Crazy People” by Timothy Findley. Together these themes illustrate how traumatic experiences can result in an inability to function within society and a stigma impacting their overall wellbeing. These actions and behaviours are explored through Emily and Jessica, who both experience depression and struggle with their ability to function within society, without gaining negative attention from their peers.
In the first half of the historical nonfiction novel, Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand, Louie Zamperini endures many hardships in his life. These struggles make me feel sorry for him and the trouble he is in. As a child, he was unable to fit in, his peers considered him “a bad kid”. Louie would unfortunately steal things on the streets, and consistently get into fights with others, commonly for no reason at all. However, the positive side to his actions, was the speed and running ability he built up. I felt relieved when his brother encouraged his participation on the school track team. Emily Grierson is to be tried as guilty for the murder of Homer Barron. Witnesses have given the readers sufficient accounts of Miss Emily’s behavior to cause belief in her committing murder of the first degree. “First degree murder is found when the defendant intends to kill and does so with premeditation and deliberation” (Criminal Law Murder Model). The victim, having been found locked away in the house of Miss Emily (327), is the basis of prosecution for the accused. Emily Grierson will be found guilty of murder because she premeditated her crime, was psychologically unstable, and attempted to conceal her crime.
Mary Rowlandson’s memoir The Sovereignty and Goodness of God was indeed a compelling, thorough and praise worthy piece of literature. Rowlandson, not only recollected a chapter of her life, she delivered a solid visual of the circumstances during Metacom’s War. Rowlandson being a minister’s wife, a Puritan and pious women, gives us her journey with the Indians. Without any hesitation she narrates the journey she experienced and in the following essay, I will be discussing portions of her journey, and the significance of religion in her life.

Both Purcell-Gates and adult education classes have same goal. They also offer homework for writing and reading. On the other hand, one way they differ is type of homework. Another difference is that adult education class’s workbook promote memorization than learning and applying the concept/skill.
Throughout the semester we have discussed a few captivity narratives such as: John Smith, Mary Rowlandson, and Cotton Mather. From a personal standpoint, Mary Rowlandson’s captivity narrative was one of the best selections we have read in class thus far. It is a prominent source of biblical encouragement to those of the Puritan religion and some other religions that put God above all human and nature. Throughout the short story, a Narrative of the Captivity and Restoration of Mary Rowlandson, it describes the eleven weeks, approximately around eighty two days, were Rowlandson was held captive. Rowlandson demonstrates how strong her faith is throughout the entire time she was gone away from her family, losing her daughter Sarah and the problems she and the other captives had to face during that amount of time. She keeps her faith through the Lord and he delivers her prays in the end, because she stayed faithful to him.
