And as a result, this problem of childhood hunger is not getting better but is actually getting worse. The effect is that parents can only get a minimum wage job with their skills and education level. This is not enough money to support a family with kids. “The Southern Education Foundation found that, for the first time in 40 years, the majority of public school students in 13 southern and four western states are living at poverty levels. A balanced nutrition for the first 3 years of a child’s life is extremely important to stabilize their mental and physical health in the future. Starvation is a common problem with poor families. It currently affects 49.1 million families in the United States. Undernutrition is the start to many diseases such as measles and malaria. If the children get these diseases, it is very likely that they don’t have health insurance to cover their illnesses and injuries. 15.8 million children have families who are not consistently stable to feed them. Food pantries are crowded and jam packed with people, that they don’t have enough food for all. The majority of canned foods and other donations are donated during Christmas or Thanksgiving when the food pantries need it the most. Nobody realizes that they need food all throughout the year. Childhood poverty is a pervasive problem in the United States. Unfortunately, many children are affected by poverty, with young children being the most vulnerable. Some of the causes of poverty include lack of education, family composition, immigration, and unemployment. The government can help in many ways by promoting marriage and free and reduced school lunch programs. Poverty is a social problem because it’s widespread. People do not have the acquired skills needed to succeed in today’s society. Childhood poverty is even more challenging because children cannot help themselves and the solutions must come from social change in order to have a significant impact. Children who live in low-income housing tend to be under nutrition which results in lost of knowledge, brain power and productivity. The children’s ability to learn in school fails because of diminished attention spans and memory due to the lack of nutrition.

I totally agree with what you said about low income family facing poor nutrition and health care challenges. Low income people do not earn that much money to buy good meal for their child. Most of the time they have to skip at least one meal from the day which end up them getting sick "as a result, they may suffer from malnutrition and other chronic health problems."( McDEVITT 108) Clearly, most of the time low income faces depression. Whole day they only think about how they will survive the next day. They always think how they are going to manage all the living expenses. With the teaching strategies, a child from low income family definitely needs a mentor to guide them in the right path. The child might not have any idea

Summary: There has been a program run by the federal government specifically intending to help low-income families get money into their savings account called the Assets for Independence Program. Ultimately they are rewarding low-income families for putting aside money into savings. For every dollar they put aside, the government matches it. They have recently discovered after running this program for 20 years that it is in fact successful. People that are part of this program have acquired more money in their savings accounts opposed to those who are not participants in this program, studies show nearly four times more on average. They finally decided to look into the effects of this program because some states are creating similar programs
