The Good Earth Essay In the Good Earth, Pearl Buck transports readers to the early 20th century in Anhwei, China. In the story, readers experience the vast differences in Chinese society from today’s world with the main character, a once poor farmer named Wang Lung. Wang Lung eventually rises in wealth and status through his most precious possession, his land. Wang Lung, his wife, O-Lan, and his family overcome many struggles in the novel, but Wang Lung and his family overcame mostly all of them. The Good Earth shows the importance of having determination, the flaw of taking someone for granted, and the value of being a hardworking person. I constantly set goals for myself that I am determined to reach. I’m very adamant when it comes to improving my times. Running could even pay off for me and my ability could possibly be even worth money, because I may get a scholarship. Also, just like Wang Lung’s land, running is extremely important in my life, it's a part of who I am as a person and no one can really take that from me or rob me of running. They can say mean things, they can take other things away, but they can’t take away my passion for running. Sometimes, people do not realize all that they have and start to take other people or material objects for granite. In the story, O-Lan has helped Wang Lung since the beginning with everything from housework, caring for the old man, and even helping in the fields. Wang Lung grows cruel to O-Lan and doesn’t think she is enough for him at certain points in the story, when in reality, O-Lan has done more than what was expected. When Wang first saw her, he was disappointed that her feet were not bound, but if they had been, she would never have been able to help him in the fields and with other chores because it would have hurt her too much to be on her feet. Later in the story, he sought out the woman named Lotus in the teahouse. He decided since he was of higher status and wealthier, he deserved more than O-Lan.
