The idea of appearance versus reality is seen in everyday life; including marriages, religion, social media, and people who make themselves look fine around their friends and family, but in reality, they can be faking everything. The play Macbeth by William Shakespeare, demonstrates the theme of appearance versus reality through each act of the play. As time passes, the reality of the character's true personality begins to appear especially on Lady Macbeth and Macbeth.
Throughout Macbeth, things are not always what they seem to be. In fact, horrible things begins to happen frequently throughout the play. But the murders and guilt consumes her after, being involved in several deaths. As the Macbeths are hosting a dinner for the lords, the lords begin to see how Macbeth is having a nervous breakdown. However, Lady Macbeth does nothing to help because she still wants to keep her strong appearance to the audience. Macbeth is not the only one frightened and paranoid for what they did. Lady Macbeth fears she will get caught so she eventually lies on how Macbeth has a bad habit. While, pretending she is a strong and brave woman, she is truly breaking inside. Now she sleepwalks and yells the blood on her hands that she can not wash. “Here’s the smell of the blood still. All the perfumes of Arabia will not sweeten this little hand. Oh, Oh, Oh!” As Lady Macbeth visions and hallucinates, she becomes insane as her actions progresses and commits suicide.
Overall, Macbeth and Lady Macbeth demonstrates themselves as two ambitious people, but as they show themselves more, they are not the people who they thought they could be. Whether it is Macbeth’s behavior, murdering innocent people in order for him to raise as king or Lady Macbeth manipulating her husband do things, the truth eventually emerges in the end where in reality, these people are cruel and disloyal towards themselves and to the
