Bullying, by definition “is unwanted, aggressive behavior among school aged children that involves a real or perceived power imbalance” (Stop Bullying). Bullying has quickly become a serious problem in schools, and it negatively impacts both the bully and the victim. Students who have been bullied even once in their lifetime have a higher risk of attempting suicide, and in general have lower self-esteem, causing them to have difficulty maintaining relationships. Bullies themselves also begin to harass their peers because they have been abused or uncared for by their own family. While it may seem bullying is just a normal part of the high school experience, victims of bullying can face many psychological problems. Bullying is not something that should be disregarded, but instead should be properly addressed so that children who are bullied can find the help they desperately need.

Schools are the most well-known settings for bullying. This is the place where students learn and socialize for most of the day. A school is a place meant to feel safe, not afraid. However, studies have shown us this is not the case. More and more students are reluctant to come to school. Why? Their peers may criticize them and abuse of them both verbally and physically. Bullying is more serious than most think. Many people just think it’s a simple hoax that was taken too far but this simple joke can lead to indelible emotional and physical scar that could hunt students for life eventually lowering their self-esteems and even ruining their lives. Schools and teachers have failed tremendously at stopping this.

Madera High is an ordinary high school in a fairly small town of about 60,000 people. Although the usual picture of bullying portrayed in the media does not occur here, there are still other forms of bullying and harassment that happen often. Cyberbullying has become the new form of harassment that teens use to bully other students. Social media is now the platform bullies prefer to use rather than the physical confrontation that bullying used to be. Through recent years, it has become an epidemic that has taken over the internet and social networks. It has made it even harder for students to get away from the bully or the person harassing them. At Madera High the amount of bullying seen at school by other students and staff is fairly low,

Bullying is defined as “verbal, physical, or psychological abuse or teasing accompanied by real or perceived imbalance of power” and is usually targets what children perceive as different (Olweus, 1993). Bullying is prevalent across the nation. It has devastating effects on students each day. Bullying is a problem for all students, regardless of race, gender or class. The National Education Association reports that 160,000 children are absent intentionally from school each day because they fear being bullied whether it is an attack or just intimidation by other students. This accounts for 15% of all school absenteeism (Hunter, 2012). Dan Olweus (1993) from the National School Safety Center tells us that bullying includes three parts: (1)

Madera High school in its past years have dealt with many cases of bullying and harassment among the students on the campus. A hand full of students from Madera High stated that people being harassed and picked on was something that was seen often on social media and up in personal. This became a major problem when social media such as Myspace were first made. This was the beginning of online harassment and bullying. Cyber bullying isn’t something that other people should just look past and ignore because people take their lives from it. People don’t notice what’s going on in the life of a victim that is bullied. Trees are going up, ornaments are being hung, and presents are being placed under the tree, ready to be opened. It’s no lie that the holidays are approaching, as children make their lists for the things they want. For some, however, making a list is not a option, some families will not to be able afford new toys and gadgets for this upcoming holiday, or just everyday essentials. For some, the holidays are a struggle to get families decent gifts. At Northrop High School, students and their families live like this everyday, never being able to afford the essentials due to having little funds.

“Opponents say school uniforms infringe upon students’ right to express their individuality, have no positive effect on behavior and academic achievement, and emphasize the socio economic disparities they are intended to disguise.” (Procon.org 1). I think that Crestwood High School should not require school uniforms because parents spend about one billion dollars per year on school uniforms. While some believe that Crestwood High School should require uniforms because they may deter crime and increase students safety.(Procon.org 1). I strongly maintain that we should not require uniforms, so students could have a right to express their thoughts. School uniforms would not be good for Crestwood because it restricts students’ freedom of expression

Bullying is bound to happen anywhere at any time but occurs mostly within school limits. Kathleen Winkler defines bulling in her book, Bullying, as “...any kind of ongoing physical or verbal mistreatment, done with the intent to harm, where there is an imbalance of power between bully and victim” (Winkler 14). Bullying has an extremely important impact on one’s everyday life and can affect their life negatively getting to the point where they can no longer take the blow. To try and prevent bullying from taking place in schools, one needs to know how bullying effects a person, what the role of each person involved in the situation is, and have knowledge of specific methods on how to prevent it. Bullying in schools is a serious problem and a handful of school do their part to prevent it; others, not as much, which means there is room for improvements.

Haltigan & Vaillancourt ( 2014) defined bullying as “ an aggressive behavior that is intentional, is repetitive in nature, and involves imbalance of power between the aggressor and his or her target”. According to Nanset et al. (2001) approximately 1 of every 10 students are bullied in the United States. Bullying can take many different forms such as, (a) verbal: teasing, taunting, name calling, or telling a child he is unwanted (b) Physical involves hitting pushing, kicking, or restraining another child slapping or restraining another child (Turner et. al, 2014) (c) cyber bullying (d) bullying (e) sexual harassment. Bullying has become a major issue in the United States and around the world. What brought the attention to people about bullying is the number of suicides that are committed by adolescents and the stories they share online or live television. Bullying is categorized to be direct verbal, direct physical, and indirect forms. Not every person has an idea how terrible bullying can be and how harmful it is to the victim. Bullying has driven students to commit actions they have never done before such as cutting themselves, suicidal thoughts, health disorders, and bad behavior. Bullying must be taken seriously, because it results in negative effects on its victims and may drive students to commit horrific actions. Lawmakers should draft anti-bullying legislation, students should stand up for one another, and society should work out what can be done to combat this problem.

At Pine Forest High School, we have a lot of problem but one of most descriptive things to say is school bullying. Not only are all the school bullying and it is not a particular phenomenon, but it is a social problem. However, bullying it varies according to the audience and the students of the school and is is one of the misbehavior of the students that people and teachers need to find ways to overcome to it in the longer in the future.

Bullying has become a hot topic in the media, after being linked to many motives in school shootings and had led to suicide or other forms of self-harm. In addition, bullying also has a severe impact on the school's social environment by causing fear throughout the student body, and suppressing their will to learn. However, research and assessment, along with anti-bullying programs, are being established all of the United States. Furthermore, discipline has been enforced in schools to show that bullying will not be tolerated anymore among their students.

About twenty-eight percent of student’s ages 12-18 reported being bullied at school during the school year according to the Indicators of School Crime and Safety report, by the Bureau of Justice statistics. Across thirty-nine states survey, 7.2 percent of students admit to not attending school because they do not feel safe. The importance of bullying can’t be undermined. Teachers and parents must understand the importance of looking and listening for signs and behaviors of bullying. This will help tackle the issue before it gets serious and someone gets hurt.

School bullying is a pervasive problem found in elementary, middle, and high schools across the United States and around the world. As an international phenomenon, school bullying occurs at similar rates in disparate cultures, countries, and educational settings (Carney & Merrell, 2001). Once seen as a normal, if not harmless part of growing up, school bullying is now recognized as one of the primary threats to school safety today (Junoven, 2005; Scarpaci, 2006; Whitted & Dupper, 2005). Since the late 1990s, several fatal school shootings committed by the victims of school bullying have brought major media attention to the issue. The result has been an increase in public awareness about the harmful effects of school bullying and a flurry of local, state, and nationwide programs designed to prevent or at least contain the problem. In recent years, psychologists, sociologists, and school administrators have all published a plethora of research about school bullying.
