William Shakespeare uses his plays not only to entertain the audience, but also to push the audience toward self-evaluation. The brilliance of Shakespeare is that his plays may be interpreted in different ways. The Tempest is not simply a fictional story meant to entertain the audience, but also a complete figurative narrative meant to mirror the art of the theatre. In this play each character represents a significant part in the alternate interpretation of the narrative. Examination of specific characters and their corresponding role in the theatrical world encourages a deeper understanding of self-reflexivity of The Tempest; which highlights William Shakespeare’s struggle to relinquish his art. Shakespeare, much like Prospero, needed more than just his art to accomplish the productions that he completed. Just as Shakespeare needed other contributors, Prospero too needed his servants. Caliban is much like the stagehand as he is not a significant part of Prospero’s works, but he is used to complete laborious task for Prospero who commands him with complete control. Caliban is referred to by Prospero as his slave, “thou poisonous slave” (I.ii.322), and is used to fetch wood. Much like a stagehand would covet the position of the playwright Caliban desires to replace Prospero as lord of the island. Though Caliban begrudgingly obeys Prospero he is eager to be rid of him and his commands. This resentful relationship is contrasted to the relationship between Prospero and Ariel. Ariel is a spirit who upon being rescued by Prospero became is his diligent servant, until such time when Prospero decides to release him. Ariel is playing the role of the actors in the figurative interpretation of the play. Prospero’s treatment of Ariel is far nicer than his treatment of Caliban, he responds in a much kinder manner, “My brave spirit” (I.ii.207). This difference in treatment can be attributed to Ariel’s importance to Prospero; Prospero needs Ariel for his plans to function. A production of The Tempest should emphasize the idealized methods in which Prospero uses magic to solve the problem of revenge which is so prevalent throughout his tragedies, perhaps the production might be a direct allegory for the magic of the theatre itself. In this conception of the play, the scattering and bringing together of the characters in the script is significant in that theatre also could be said to bring people together and allow them to share in an experience of emotion, magic, and finally, of resolution. The Tempest, by Shakespeare, offers the reader a variety of themes. The one theme that stands out the most is that of colonialism. During the time of Shakespeare, many European countries such as Spain, France, and England, were expanding their borders by taking over less developed countries, referred to as colonies. During this time of exploitation, there was skepticism concerning the possible success of the colonies. While some scholars believe that the play is about the Americas, I argue that the play reflects on colonialism in general and how it is destined for failure which is shown through the character’s relationships throughout the play.

Prospero's relationship with Caliban differs from that of Prospero and Ariel's. Prospero does not view Caliban as a being who could be his equal. He is blinded by his prejudice against Caliban's appearance and manners. Caliban is portrayed in a negative light. He can be seen as the depiction of the victims of colonial expansion. Although Prospero seeks this righteousness, he both mistreats and insults Caliban, who ultimately attempts to kill Prospero. The role of language in Shakespeare’s play “The Tempest” is quite significant. To Miranda and Prospero the use of language is a means to knowing oneself. Caliban does not view language in the same light. Prospero taught Caliban to speak, but instead of creating the feeling of empowerment from language, Caliban reacts in insurrectionary manner. Language reminds him how different he is from Miranda and Prospero, and also how they have changed him. It also reminds him of how he was when he wasn’t a slave. He resents Prospero for “Civilising” him, because in doing so he took away his freedom.
